78. Sign Me Up for the Declaration of Peace! (good site!)
Sign Me Up for the Declaration of Peace!
by John Dear

This summer we’ve seen several beautiful protests against U.S. warmaking. Friends have been fasting for peace in front of the White House under the banner, “Troops Home Fast.” Others have been walking for peace through Illinois, Indiana and Kentucky. Eighty five year old Rev. Daniel Berrigan and two dozen others blocked the entrance to the U.S. mission to the United Nations, demanding the closure of Guantanamo, and were arrested and jailed. In New Mexico, we’re preparing for the 61st anniversary of the U.S. atomic bombing of Hiroshima when we’ll sit in sackcloth and ashes to repent of the sin of war and nuclear weapons at Los Alamos, where the Bush administration spends billions of dollars on nuclear weapons, and even wants to start pit production next year. Hundreds will join us in Los Alamos on August 6th, including Kathy Kelly and Cindy Sheehan. Everyone is welcome.

53. Mainers Hold Mideast Peace Rally In Portland

Maine residents gathered in Portland Tuesday to protest the violence in the middle east and encourage a peaceful U.S. intervention.

Representatives from such groups as Peace Action Maine and Maine Veterans for Peace gathered at noon to criticize the rising violence in the middle east and show support for an immediate ceasefire. Some in attendance also wore signs commemorating Rachel Corrie, a human rights activist killed by an isreali bulldozer 3 years ago.

"I don't think you can negotiate truthfully and honestly while you're shooting at each other. That should be the first step and I resent my tax dollars going for weapons and bombs that kill innocent civilians in Lebanon and Gaza," said Ursula Slavick from Peace Action Maine.

Organizers sent information on the vigil to Maine's senators and urged people to call thier government and demand peaceful negotiations in the middle east.

Hundreds of protesters, many carrying antiwar signs and fake coffins, marched quietly in a mock funeral procession yesterday through upper Northwest Washington to the Israeli Embassy to protest the bombings in Lebanon and the Gaza Strip and to urge the United States to broker a cease-fire.

"One, two, three, four, we don't want your racist war; five, six, seven, eight, Israel is a terrorist state," protesters chanted outside the embassy, off Van Ness Street. More than a dozen police and security officers stood outside the building.

"Israel out of Palestine, cease fire now," the crowd continued after speakers demanded an end to the killings of civilians and to U.S. support of the bombings.

Bay area people protest Israel & U.S. role in Lebanon

Tampa, Florida - More than a hundred people turned out in Tampa today to protest the situation in Lebanon.

People from the Council on American-Islamic Relations, or "CAIR", held a peace really at Columbus and Dale Mabry.

They don't agree with the United States' offer to aid Israel, and say they believe U.S. money is helping destroy Lebanon.

Courtney Copeland, Protesting Israel-Lebanon War
“Each year we support millions and millions of dollars for terrorism activities. What they're doing in Lebanon is terrorism and they're bullying the rest of the Middle Eastern countries. I think Condoleezza Rice and the UN really need to step in, because there's a lot of innocent people that are being killed over there.”

57. Muslims, Christians protest bombardment of Lebanon (MA)
Edited on Wed Jul-26-06 02:00 AM by sfexpat2000

By James Vaznis, Globe Staff | July 22, 2006

Hundreds of people, including Muslims and Christians, turned out for a rally yesterday afternoon at Boston City Hall Plaza to protest Israel's bombing of Lebanon and the treatment of Palestinians.

Participants carried signs such as ``Free All Palestinian and Lebanese Political Prisoners," ``End the Israeli Occupation," and ``Stop Aid and Weapons." At times during the nearly three-hour rally, which included a prayer service and was sponsored by the Muslim American Society, they chanted ``Free, Free Palestine," and then ``Free, Free Lebanon." A police officer at the scene estimated the crowd at 2 p.m. to be 500.

Around 1:30 p.m., hundreds gathered in tidy eastward-facing rows of about 50 people each, to pray to God. Most kneeled on prayer rugs. Others improvised with newspapers. Some took off their shoes. Usually, at that time of the week, they would have gathered in a mosque. Assam Omeish, president of the Muslim American Society, led the prayer.

Caline Jarudi, executive director of the American-Arab Anti-Discrimination Committee of Massachusetts, said that holding the rally was a big step among Muslims, who often are apprehensive about publicly vocalizing their views because they can face discrimination. ``The rally was about justice and hopefully there is no consequence," she said.

59. Thousands protest Israel attack on Lebanon (Go Sydney!)

Saturday, July 22, 2006 (Sydney):

More than 10,000 people, carrying coffins and chanting "No war," shrugged off a chilly rain in Sydney to protest against Israel's attacks on Lebanon.

Police estimated turnout at about 10,000 people, including former
Guantanamo Bay detainee Mamdouh Habib and the spiritual leader of Australia's Muslim community, Sheikh Taj Aldin Alhilali.

The organisers put the number at closer to 20,000.

Parents carried Australian and Lebanese flags as their children wore T-shirts with slogans such as "Stop killing the babies."

Protests continue in India over Israeli attack on Lebanon

Srinagar/Kolkata: Hundreds of activists of the separatist women's group Dukthran-E-Millat took to the streets here on Monday to protest Israeli attack on Lebanon.

Led by Asiya Andrabi, chief of Dukthran-E-Millat, outraged protestors marched through the streets of Srinagar, chanting "anti-Israel" slogans, and called upon Muslims across the world to declare holy war against Israel.

"We call upon the Muslim community, across India, Pakistan and the Arab countries to stand up against such aggression. They (Israel) are perpetrating such acts of violence because we are quite. The only way out is 'Jihaad'," Andrabi said.

In Kolkata, activist of All India Anti-Imperialist Forum and the Socialist Unity Centre of India (SUCI) also took out a rally to protest Israel's aggression. The activist chanted anti-Israel slogans and burnt an effigy of the Israeli Prime Minister Areil Sharon.

MONTREAL (AFP) - Some 1,400 Canadians chanting "Israel, assassin" demonstrated against
Israel's military campaign in Lebanon, an AFP reporter witnessed, as other rallies gripped Ottawa, Vancouver and Toronto.

The protesters denounced Prime Minister Stephen Harper as an "accomplice" for refusing to call on Israel to accept a ceasefire in the campaign, which began with the abduction of two Israeli soldiers by the Lebanese Hezbollah militia.

The Montreal demonstration was joined by the Lebanese-Canadian El-Akhras family, 11 of whose members were killed in Lebanon during the Israeli bombardment.

The government believes some 50,000 Canadians, many of them of Lebanese origin, are currently in Lebanon.

62. Thousands march in protest against Israeli attacks (London)

By Gideon Long Sat Jul 22, 4:17 PM ET

LONDON (Reuters) - Thousands of demonstrators marched through London and hundreds more gathered in Amsterdam and Chicago on Saturday to protest against Israeli attacks in Lebanon and the refusal of the U.S. and British governments to condemn them.

Police said around 7,000 people joined the London protest as it snaked from the banks of the Thames to Hyde Park, first in brilliant sunshine and then in torrential rain.

Many carried red and white Lebanese flags and placards condemning "Israeli crimes in Lebanon."

"We are all Hizbollah. Boycott Israel" read one. "Axis of evil: Bush, Blair, Olmert," read another, referring to the political leaders of the United States, Britain and Israel.

Jordanian journalists protest against Israeli assault on Lebanon

Jordanian journalists suspended work for one hour on Monday to express solidarity with the Palestinian and Lebanese peoples under Israeli "barbaric aggression," local media reported.

The suspension, initiated by the Jordan Press Association, was to condemn Israel for targeting journalists and preventing them from covering the "massacres" against Lebanese civilians as well as destroying infrastructure in Lebanon and the Palestinian territories, the report said.

Tariq Momani, president of the association, on Monday called on the international community to shoulder its responsibilities toward the Israeli attacks and protect journalists in the areas targeted by Israel.

He also mourned the death of Lebanese journalist Layal Nagib, who was killed in an Israeli shelling.

64. Greek police, anti-war protesters clash

ATHENS, Greece - Greek protesters toppled a statue of President Truman and clashed with police during demonstrations Tuesday against the fighting in Lebanon.

The ruckus began after 2,000 demonstrators, backed by Greece's largest trade unions and local anti-globalization groups, marched to the Israeli Embassy and also smashed nearby bank and storefront windows.

Several dozen youths broke away from the rally to confront riot police who had ringed the embassy. Police fire tear gas into the crowd and detained seven people. No one was injured.

Demonstrators gathered earlier outside the U.S. Embassy and used a power saw and ropes to bring down the Truman statue.

Palestinians protest Condoleezza's visit

By Khalil Al Assali, Gulf News Report

Occupied Jerusalem: Palestinians downed their shutters in protest at US Secretary of State Condoleezza Rice's current tour.

Many of them expressed fear of Washington's idea of the new Middle East, which was marketed by Rice before and during her regional tour.

"Rice came to us to merely market the idea of the new Middle East where Palestine will have no place," said Mohammad Al Salfeeti, 60, who sells wooden sculptures in old Jerusalem.

Al Salfeeti's words expressed what most Palestinians feel.

Cairo, Sunday 23 July 2006
EMERGENCY ACTION: LEBANON
CALL FOR A GENERAL STRIKE
http://www.brusselstribunal.org/Lebanon.htm

Public demonstrations are essential, but even more is demanded of us. The system has to be disrupted completely if there is to be any chance of minimizing the casualties of Israel's coming ground invasion and re-occupation of South Lebanon.

We call on all workers, all management, all professions, all unions and syndicates, and all Arabs to begin immediately a general strike.
We appeal especially to dockers, oil workers and airport workers. Anyone who has a position in the supply chain for Israel should act on their conscience.
This action is needed now. We believe the invasion will begin this week.
General strike, now!

20. Blasted By a Missle on the Road to Safety

Blasted by a Missile on the Road to Safety
Family ordered to flee were targeted because they were driving minivan

by Suzanne Goldenberg

The ambulanceman gave Ali the job of keeping his mother alive. The 12-year-old did what he could. "Mama, mama, don't go to sleep," he sobbed, gently patting her face beneath her chin. Behind her black veil, her eyelids were slowly sinking. "I'm going to die," she sighed. "Don't say that, mama," Ali begged, and then slid to the ground in tears.

Ali Sha'ita, 12, is distraught as he tries to comfort his mother, who was wounded when an Israeli missile hit their vehicle, killing three and injuring 16. Photograph: Sean Smith

On the pavement around mother and son were the other members of the Sha'ita family, their faces spattered with each other's blood. All were in varying shades of shock and injury. A tourniquet was tied on Ali's mother's arm. A few metres away, his aunt lay motionless, the white T-shirt beneath her abaya stained red. Two sisters hugged each other and wept, oblivious to the medics tending their wounds. "Let them take me, let them take me," one screamed.

Their mother was placed on a stretcher, and lifted into the ambulance. "God is with you, mama," Ali said. She reached up with her good arm to caress his face.

The Sha'itas had thought they were on the road to safety when they set out yesterday, leaving behind a village which because of an accident of geography - it is five miles from the Israeli border - had seemed to make their home a killing ground. They had been ordered to evacuate by the Israelis.

Human Rights Watch: Israel Dropping Cluster Bombs on Lebanese Civilians
in violation of the Geneva Convention. Bouckaert claims the situation is a lot worse in Lebanon than it ever was in Iraq.

http://www.democracynow.org/article.pl?sid=06/07/25/144...

Human Rights Watch says Israel is dropping cluster bombs on Lebanese residential neighborhoods in possible violation of international law. We speak with HRW's Peter Bouckaert in Beirut.

The United Nations has launched an emergency appeal for the international community to help the people of Lebanon. Emergency Relief Coordinator Jan Egeland said $150 million is needed urgently. A total of about 800,000 people have been forced to flee their homes. Food, water, fuel and medical supplies are running out in parts of the country. The UN says entire communities have been cut off because Israel has systemtically destroyed the country's networks of roads and bridges. Meanwhile, questions are being raised as to whether Israel is violating international law. On Sunday, UN High Commissioner Louise Arbour told CNN Israel’s actions in Lebanon could lead to the prosecution of its military commanders. Meanwhile, Human Rights Watch says Israel is shelling civilian areas with cluster bombs. On Monday, Democracy Now reached Peter Bouckaert. He's the emergencies director for Human Rights Watch, currently in Beirut. He talked about the humanitarian situation on the ground, as well as the situation for Lebanon's hundreds of thousands of refugees.

In Lebanon: 'There are children dying' - UN humanitarian boss
http://www.dailystar.com.lb/article.asp?edition_id=1&ca...

BEIRUT: Jan Egeland, the United Nations undersecretary general for Humanitarian Affairs and Emergency Relief Coordinator, began a six-day mission to the Middle East Sunday where he spoke to wounded and displaced civilians as well as Lebanese politicians.

"I am here on a humanitarian mission on behalf of Kofi Annan. This war has affected the civilian population more than anything. There are children dying. It has to stop," said Egeland, speaking to the press outside the Rafik Hariri Hospital in Beirut.

"Israel deserves security but, also, Lebanon deserves security. A life is worth as much in Israel and Lebanon," Egeland added.

On the first day of his Middle Eastern mission, Egeland toured four different humanitarian centers of Beirut. He went to view the Beirut suburb of Dahiyeh in the morning, a school and the Sanayeh Gardens, where he heard from displaced families, and the Rafik Hariri Hospital where he spoke to the wounded.

He said that in Dahiyeh the UN tour had been "trampling on children's books."

Egeland heard the voices of the wounded, including a family of seven. All five of the children were severely wounded, while their father, a taxi driver, had lost both of his legs. The mother was being treated for minor wounds.

40. Interview with former captain, Israeli air force (Democracy Now!)
Demonstrations took place around the world this weekend calling for an end to Israel’s attacks in Lebanon and Gaza. On Saturday an estimated 10,000 protestors in Toronto marched from the Israeli consulate to the United States consulate. The protesters called for sanctions and a boycott of Israeli goods. Around 7,000 people joined a protest in London that took place along the Thames River. And several hundred took part in marches in Birmingham, Amsterdam, and downtown Chicago. Anti-war protests were also held in Israel. On Saturday in Tel Aviv, some 2,000 protesters held a demonstration against the war, and the country’s alliance with the United States. They also called on Israeli soldiers to refuse military service. Today we are joined in studio by Yonatan Shapira who is a military refuser. Yonatan is a former Captain in the Israeli Air Force Reserves. In 2003, Yonatan initiated a group of Israeli Air Force pilots to sign a declaration refusing to participate in aerial attacks on Palestinian territories. Yonatan is also a co-founder of the group Combatants for Peace. Yonatan was with us on Friday and we welcome him back to Democracy Now!

45. Five Myths That Sanction Israel's War Crimes
Published on Tuesday, July 25, 2006 by CommonDreams.org

Five Myths That Sanction Israel's War Crimes
by Jonathan Cook

This week I had the pleasure to appear on American radio, on the Laura Ingraham show, pitted against David Horowitz, a "Semite supremacist” who most recently made his name under the banner of Campus Watch, leading McCarthyite witch-hunts against American professors who have the impertinence to suggest that maybe, just maybe, Arabs have minds and feelings like the rest of us.

It was a revealing experience, at least for a British journalist rarely exposed to the depths of ignorance and prejudice in the United States on Middle East matters -- well, apart from the regular wackos who fill my email inbox. But five minutes of listening to Horowitz speak, and the sympathy with which his arguments were greeted by Laura (“The Professors -- your book’s a great read, David”), left me a lot more frightened about the world’s future.

Horowitz’s response to every question, every development in the Middle East, whether it concerns Lebanon, the Palestinians, Syria, or Iran, is the same: “They want to drive the Jews into the sea." It’s as simple as that. Not even a superficial attempt at analysis; just the message that the Arab world is trying to finish off the genocide started by Europe. And if Laura is any yardstick, a lot of Americans buy that stuff.

Horowitz is keen to bang the square peg of the Lebanon story into the round hole of his claims that the “Jews” are facing an imminent genocide in the Middle East. And to help him, he and the massed ranks of US apologists for Israel -- regulars, I suspect, of shows like Laura’s -- are promoting at least four myths regarding Hezbollah’s current rockets strikes on Israel. Unless they are challenged at every turn, the danger is that they will win the ground war against common sense in the US

Press Release: United Nations
Lebanon: UN Launches $149 Million Three-Month Emergency Appeal

New York, Jul 24 2006 6:00PM

The United Nations today launched a $149 million humanitarian appeal for Lebanon covering the next three months and focusing on food, health care, logistics, water and sanitation, protection and common services for an estimated 800,000 people affected by the worsening conflict.

“The aid community can help save lives in this region,” said Jan Egeland, UN Under-Secretary-General for Humanitarian Affairs and Emergency Relief Coordinator, who is seeing the situation first-hand in Lebanon before travelling on later today to Israel and the occupied Palestinian territories.

“More supplies are on their way – but we need safe access so that we can get the aid to those who need it most,” he stressed, echoing earlier calls that humanitarian workers and supplies be allowed for those most in need in the conflict.

Two weeks of fighting between the Israeli Defence Force (IDF) and Lebanese group Hezbollah have killed over 350 people and wounded more than 1,500 inside Lebanon, while in Israel over 34 people have been killed and 200 wounded, the Office for the Coordination of Humanitarian Affairs (OCHA) said today.

PM's daughter protests Gaza killings

Dana Olmert takes part in left-wing demonstration outside army chief's house; protesters call Halutz 'murderer,' declare 'intifada shall prevail.' Meanwhile, human rights groups send letter to PM, defense minister, calling on them to stop war crimes in territories

Some 200 left-wing activists marched outside the house of IDF Chief of Staff Dan Halutz at the Tzahala neighborhood in Tel Aviv Saturday evening, to protest the killing of civilians in Gaza on Friday.

The demonstrators chanted slogans such as "Tzahala residents, there's a murderer in your neighborhood," and raised signs calling on the government to "put a stop to the murder of civilians" and stating, "Halutz is a killer, the intifada shall prevail." Activists also shouted, "neighbors, ask Halutz why he's killing children and how many."

Dana Olmert, the daughter of Israel's Prime Minister Ehud Olmert, also took part in the demonstration.

51. National Call-In Day for Immediate Cease-Fire
this I received this morning from: http://www.endtheoccupation.org/

"TAKE ACTION: Contact your Representative and ask them to sign on as a cosponsor to H.Con.Res.450, calling for an immediate cease-fire in the Middle East. If your Representative has already co-sponsored this resolution, please call to thank him/her. For contact information, click here: http://www.congress.org/

BACKGROUND: Despite mounting civilian casualties on all sides, the United States continues to provide Israel with a green light to destroy Lebanon and the Gaza Strip. Last week, both the Senate and the House passed resolutions expressing uncritical support for Israel's attacks on the Gaza Strip and Lebanon. Secretary of State Condoleezza Rice callously described the killing of Lebanese civilians and the destruction of civilian infrastructure as the "birth pangs of a new Middle East". The New York Times reported that the United States is rushing delivery of more satellite- and laser-guided bombs to Israel to sustain its attacks in violation of the US Arms Export Control and Foreign Assistance Acts.

We need to tell our elected representatives that the United States should be working for an immediate cease-fire, not providing Israel with the diplomatic and military support that it needs to wage its attacks.

Today, Tuesday, July 25, several national organizations-including the US Campaign to End the Israeli Occupation, the American-Arab Anti-Discrimination Committee, Jewish Voice for Peace, the Council for the National Interest, Partners for Peace, Progressive Democrats of America, United for Peace and Justice, Peace Action, and the American Friends Service Committee-are organizing a national call-in day to Congress to support H.Con.Res.450, introduced by Rep. Dennis Kucinich (D-OH), which calls upon the United States to pursue an "immediate cessation of violence" and "multi-party negotiations with no preconditions".

TAKE ACTION: Contact your Representative and ask them to sign on as a cosponsor to H.Con.Res.450, calling for an immediate cease-fire in the Middle East.
