Local large sign at fundie church, "Give God what's Right,
not what's Left". No doubt what that meant. They pulled it before I had a chance to report it to the ACLU. I didn't have my camera with me. In the town of Sedro Woolley for those familar with the area in WA state.

16. I get it...
Sinister is derived from the Latin word sinistre, meaning on the left side. This is why there are many superstitions pertaining to all things left. I.e., left handed people people evil or strange, being bad luck to enter a building with your left foot (which is why guards were placed at the left of entrances). That is what you were suggesting, right... err.. correct?

8. Maybe it's not political
Meaning, give God what God deserves (what's "right") and don't just give him what's left over?

I'm no fan of fundies and am not even a Christian, and fundies have certainly crossed the line of appropriateness in terms of politics before. But maybe this is just one of those cheesy church-sign slogans meant to get people to go to church more? Most of the church sign slogans around here seem to say something about going to church more often instead of staying home.

10. I think you're correct, conflictgirl
Jesus told his followers to give to Caesar what is Caesar's, and to God what is God's.

I have this feeling that with gas prices the way they are, God's share is going to Exxon and God's getting the change out of the seat cushions. Hence the admonition.

'Course, God getting what's God's right now means the flock's got to eat ramen three nights a week, but that's okay by them. "Don't you know you're supposed to fast for Our President those days?"

That's what I thought, too. I'm predisposed to look at things from a religious perspective first followed by the secular (politics, et.al.).

Having said that, I really dislike churches buying into bumper-sticker philosphies to advertise themselves.

13. We called them on it
and that WAS their explanation, BUT, they've had other "questionable" statements on that sign before. It just seemed like it political, not too far from the "Mike McGavick" sign. (the puke running against Cantwell)

15. Stewardship campaign
They're advocating giving to God what is right and proper, rather than whatever's left over after all the "necessities" have taken their bite. It's actually a good strategy for a personal giving program, in that one's "necessities" tend to shrink a bit when you make your charitable donations right off the top.

One of the old jokes that goes with a stewardship drive is the pastor who stands up before the congregation, and announces enthusiastically that the congregation has plenty of money to meet its budget for the coming year. Everyone cheers, then the pastor concludes, "The bad news is, that money is still in your pockets."

19. Correct -- that slogan has NOTHING to do with politics...
It's been around for ages, and is strictly related to pledging/tithing campaigns.

If you were talking about fundie politics, they would never label their positions as "right-wing," anyway. They might use "conservative," but would most likely try to avoid admitting to a left-right dichotomy by talking about "Godly" or "pro-God and pro-family" politics, or "winning America back for God." :eyes:

Speed it up and let the good be taken now.

The bad will still be around to make their little wars.
