Oh My! Harry Truman Statue Pulled Down In Greece today!
I do believe the world sees what Americans do not. The Israeli War on Lebanon is also a US war on Lebanon.......

A man stands behind the statue of U.S. President Harry S. Truman in Athens, July 25, 2006, which was pulled down by Greek leftists in a move harking back to the U.S. invasion of Iraq as part of an anti-war demonstration against the Israeli bombing of Lebanon. REUTERS/John Kolesidis (GREECE)

2. Ol' Give 'em Hell,
Harry bites the dust in Greece!

Wondering why a statue of him was up anyway?

I don't like statues of people..can you imagine any statues of bush right now other than target practice for eggs?

3. Truman aided the fascist military in the Greek Civil War.
Antipathy towards Truman by the Greek left goes back to 1948 when the (not so) Cold War started.

19. More on Truman's decision
the beginning of the Truman Doctrine. Russia was putting pressure on the governments of Turkey and Greece and Britain could no longer afford to keep giving their governments financial aid, so they asked the US to step in.

...

"Addressing a joint session of Congress on March 12, 1947, President Harry S. Truman asked for $400 million in military and economic assistance for Greece and Turkey and established a doctrine, aptly characterized the Truman Doctrine, that would guide U.S. diplomacy for the next forty years. President Truman declared, "It must be the policy of the United States to support free peoples who are resisting attempted subjugation by armed minorities or by outside pressures." The sanction of aid to Greece and Turkey by a Republican Congress indicated the beginning of a long and enduring bipartisan cold war foreign policy. The Truman Doctrine has raised profound questions from historians regarding its origins, long-term consequences, and the relationship between domestic and foreign policy. However, one thing is for certain, the Truman Doctrine signaled America's post war embrace of global leadership and ended its longstanding policy of isolationism."

According to the Truman Doctrine, we should be supporting Lebanon right now.

6. Interesting.
I didn't know we had statues of our presidents scattered around the world. In the long run perhaps it's a good thing. Putting up statues of your leaders in foreign countries smacks of the ancient Roman empire to me. Although, it's too bad it was Harry, one of our presidents we could be proud of.

8. Greeks never have liked us. I remember getting into an argument
with a taxi cab driver in Athens back in 1971 over America.

12. I've had a similar conversation with a 'Greek Businessman'
They've got some obnoxious nationalist issues of their own...sadly for very little to contribute to world culture outside of two or three shining generations in Athens nearly 3000 years ago.

15. The world is apparently not as blind as we are...
There was a picture posted yesterday. One side had the flags that support Israel's actions and the other had the flags against. The U.S. looked pretty lonely there with the Israel and British flags while the other side of the page had every other flag in the world on it.
