Senate passes minors abortion bill
Measure punishes those who help girls cross state lines for procedure

WASHINGTON - A bill that would make it a crime to take a pregnant girl across state lines for an abortion without her parents' knowledge passed the Senate Tuesday, but vast differences with the House version stood between the measure and President Bush's desk.

The 65-34 vote gave the Senate's approval to the bill, which would make taking a pregnant girl to another state for the purposes of evading parental notification laws punishable by fines and up to a year in jail.

The girl and her parents would be exempt from prosecution, and the bill contains an exception for abortions performed in this manner that posed a threat to the mother's life.

The republicans are being forced to give the fundies what they elected them for in an attempt to save the fall elections.

1. So sad the theocrats pushed this through
My legislator, who is also a social worker, tried to explain at the state level, that if these girls didn't have enough trust in their parents to tell them of the pregnancy, there was something wrong with the parent and the girl was at risk of harm.

How very sad. Expect an increase in dead newborns in trash cans and dumpsters.

2. Yes, that's the inevitability.
Very sad.

5. Or expect a bunch of temporary "runaways". What's next? Federal
agents waiting at bus stops and train stations with pregnancy tests?

... both Nelson's, Pryor, Reid, and Salazar have all joined the Womb-Fascists.

Chaffee, Collins, Snowe, and Specter seem to have resisted interfering in one of the most agonizingly difficult choices a teen-aged girl might ever confront.

4. Let them face their role in abandoning these girls and
the results of their vote.
