Rooms to let; atheists need not apply
The way Joe Fabics sees it, he has the right to choose who lives under his roof with him. His choice: God-fearing Christians. But state officials are investigating whether Fabics is violating housing discrimination laws by asking tenants in his New Brunswick house to sign leases with phrases such as, "This is a Christian household" and "If you hate God, do not move in."

"I try to tell people to believe in God and the Ten Commandments, not the desecration of today's teachings," he said. "I'm just telling them that this is a Christian household and that if they don't believe in God, they will feel uncomfortable. Most people understand that and don't try to push their way in. This is not communism."

(snip)

"People lie to me, and then when they move in, they don't care about God or morality or anything," he said. "I don't want people that use drugs, alcoholics, people that lie."

He also doesn't want unmarried tenants spending the night with a boyfriend or girlfriend.

"That's against the teachings of the Roman Catholic Church," he said, but "I can't control that."

47. The Rapture isn't even a Protestant thing. It's an ultra-conservative
biblical literalist fundamentalist whacko thing. Like Foursquare Gospel Church, and Southern Baptist, and snake-handler churches.

Don't just go blaming the Protestants in general now.

I was raised nominally Presbyterian and never heard of the Rapture until the PTL Club and Jim and Tammy Faye.

53. Well, you know
The newspapers only see fit to write stories about atheists when they're torturing Christians. You know, like when an atheist lets a Christian put a Cross memorial on the atheists land for over two weeks, then when the Christian doesn't take it down at the agreed upon time the atheist disposes of it. Mean old atheists! :sarcasm:

and this is nineteen hundred different kinds of illegal. We'd never accept an ad like this; we could be sued into oblivion for it, and rightly so.

HOWEVER.

I agree this kind of "honesty" can be a huge benefit to the consumer. Can you imagine renting a room in this place without knowing beforehand what kind of hateful control-freak whackjob you're dealing with until after you've laid down your deposit and signed your lease and had your stuff hauled in?

34. Under the Federal law, if they are renting rooms in their owner occupied
house and have 4 rooms or less to rent - it is legal. Local/State laws may be different, but at the Fed level, they didn't want to force these small people to have to deal with anything outside of their beliefs. Apparently the idea that the people who would refuse to rent could just stop renting never occured to them.

on the basis of religion. My uncle rents out a garage apartment, and he's quite the bigot in every way, and was pissed that NJ law said he couldn't discriminate on race, religion, or sexual orientation.

35. I had a landlord who was just as religious -- however, he wasn't a pain
about it. He was an elderly man who would come up to do some repair, I'd offer him coffee, and he'd try to get me to come to his church. He'd talk some gospel, etc. But the difference was he didn't hold me in lesser regard because I didn't agree with him or convert on the spot. It was rather friendly. I never felt that my tenancy was at risk or we offended each other. I even attended his funeral and cried. To me, my landlord was more of a christian than the bigot in the original post.

No different than I renting out a room in my house and saying "Bush supporters need not apply." The law gives more leeway if it is not apartments or a separate house.
