Did you hear what Judge Pickering said on C-SPAN this morning?
He was telling a story about his son, Chip Pickering, who is a Congressman. Chip went to Harry Reid to try to get Harry to stop the filibuster against his dad's nomination. Harry Reid told him THIS: "I will NOT stop the filibuster against your dad because OUR CONSTITUENTS WANT US TO FILIBUSTER HIS NOMINATION AND WE ARE DOING WHAT OUR CONSTITUENTS HAVE TOLD US THEY WANT US TO DO." :wow::wow::wow:

The moral of this story? THEY DO LISTEN TO US! We just have to MAKE THEM listen to us! Keep calling about ScAlito! ScAlito's nomination is much more important. This is, after all, a SCOTUS LIFETIME appointment!

I'm not sure all of them listen, but it's nice to know some of them do.

2. sounds like an open admission of nepotism
Edited on Wed Jan-18-06 11:34 AM by sui generis
Chip went to Harry Reid to try to get Harry to stop the filibuster against his dad's nomination.

Now that is why we have nepotism rules in government so that our relatives don't confer a career advantage upon us.

3. Pickering is a total wingbut. Hard to believe he's a judge.
Edited on Wed Jan-18-06 11:35 AM by CottonBear
He lied his ass off when confronted by a Democratic caller regarding Pickering's false statistics about what percentage of Clinton judicial nominees were approved vs how many never made it out of committee.

8. He said he stood up for the rights of gays and minorities. Right.
He also said he had no problem with RW X-tian judges basing their rulings on the Bible. :grr:
:scared: The man is a FREAK. He can barely speak properly. I wonder if he does that on purpose in order to appeal to the "common" sheeple. :(

18. That doesn't make any sense to me
How do you stand up for gays and minorties if you don't mind Christian judges ruiling on the Bible? That doesn't make any sense.

11. One Senator can stop a nomination
Republicans used the practice of blue slips or an anonymous hold to allow a single Senator -- not 41 Senators, but 1 -- to prevent a nomination from receiving a vote in the Judiciary Committee, a 60-vote cloture vote on the floor, or an up-or-down vote on the floor of the Senate. This was a filibuster of one, and it can still take place within the Judiciary Committee.

The fact is, more than 60 judicial nominees suffered this fate during the last administration. In other words, over 60 Clinton judges were filibustered successfully by one Senator, often anonymous, often in secret, no debate as to why. It was an effective blackball. A "pocket filibuster."

considering that Reid let Pickering (along with Owens and Brown) onto the federal court for life.... and ended up looking like a fool in the process.

12. um...wrong.....Pickering received a "recess appointment."
by the IDIOT-IN CHIEF.

U. S. Court of Appeals for the Fifth Circuit
Received a recess appointment from George W. Bush on January 16, 2004, to a seat vacated by Henry A. Politz; nominated on January 7, 2003; Service terminated on December 8, 2004, due to retirement.

A Judge Appointed by Bush After Impasse in Senate Retires
December 10, 2004

"Charles W. Pickering Sr., who was appointed by President Bush to a federal appeals court without Senate approval during a Congressional recess, announced his retirement on Thursday at a ceremony at the federal courthouse in Hattiesburg, Miss. Judge Pickering, whose nomination to the United States Court of Appeals for the Fifth Circuit, in New Orleans, was twice blocked by the Senate because of Democratic opposition before President Bush made the recess appointment in January, said he would not seek a new nomination to a permanent position on the court. 'President Bush can now nominate someone younger who will be able to serve longer, which I believe is in the best interest of the court,' Judge Pickering said, according to The Associated Press.'Extreme special-interest groups opposed my nomination primarily due to their hostility to any nominee with strong religious convictions who personally disagrees with them on abortion, marriage and references to God at public ceremonies and institutions,' Judge Pickering wrote in a statement, issued late Wednesday. 'These far-left groups cowed Democrat leadership into opposing my nomination. In doing so, they pushed those senators out of the American mainstream, some out of their Senate seats, and the Democratic Party out of entire regions of the country.'.Ralph G. Neas, the president of People for the American Way, a liberal group that opposed Judge Pickering's elevation to the appeals court, said the judge's statement was 'a graceless goodbye.' 'His partisan, ideological farewell underscores the concerns that were raised about his confirmation,' Mr. Neas said in a statement."

15. and we're supposed to believe the word of his kid?
Sounds more like an attempt to smear . . . one of those "governing by the polls" . . . if Pickering was saying it, then you know it has to be BS . . .
