If you were the President, what would YOUR Foreign Policy be? |
|
President Osoraptor would draw the nation more inward, not isolationist, just more home based and concerned more with fair trade to all, hostility toward none.
I'd like to see us go ahead and allow the gas engine to die off, like the 8-track tape player. Give up oil, give up being the world's cops, give up interfering in the governments of others and take care of the needy here at home.
Stop spending so much on a war that we don't need and spend it on education and poverty and unemployment and rebuilding our infrastructure.
I'd have all our jobs brought back home, and stop being ugly Americans and pig headed as we go into the world. I'd stop flying all over the world making deals and threatening world leaders, and I'd behave myself and be a gentleman at summit meetings.
I'd immediately stop selling arms to any nation. I'd also stop borrowing money from other nations, and loaning money for military purposes. I'd demand all payments owed to us, and I'd demand that we pay off all our debts and be solvent.
I'd support the u.n. and stop being the bully of the world.
I'd not make a war without permission from the people, and I would not have military bases all over the globe. I'd stop playing like this was Rome, and that we deserve to be imperialists.
I would make the profiting off war illegal again. I would hold the pentagon accountable for every dime. I would trim the military budget and make veteran's benefits REAL, and more plentiful.
I would not send our soldiers to die for the profit of corporations, or the egos of maniacs.
I would walk softly and carry a big stick. But I would not go around threatening whole nations, or favoring others without good reason.
I would happily send aid to people who need it, and not forget those here at home who need it too.
I would treat all prisoners of war, uniforms or not, with dignity and humanity, according to the Geneva Convention standards. ----------------------
Anyways...don't get me started.
Any other Ideas?

1. A change in foreign policy should follow a big change in domestic policy |

to slowly dismantle the petro-economy and America's dependence of fossil fuels. That would do a lot to removed the distorted economic rationale for continued US meddling in the Middle East.

Dennis Kucinich would be a top advisor, if not my VP. I'd make energy independence a priority, and suggest that those companies buidling weapons switch to building mass transit like high speed rail, 'cause they wouldn't be getting ANY money from the government from now on. All troops would be withdrawn from Iraq and other places overseas, and retrained so that they could build homes and infrastructure. Then they would go where invited to help improve the lives of others.
Church and state would be strictly seperated, though I would not hide the fact that I am a universal Sufi and that I feel all paths lead to Unity-and that the path to Unity is tolerance, respect, and understanding.
Universal health care would include holistic health practices, showing folks how to live and eat in a healthy manner.
Paperwork to and from the government would be streamlined, and taxes would be progressive.

but to continue down the road of empire until it was no longer possible, either by overexpansion, or a defeat militarily by another expanding center of power. All that would come within the context of globalization, which won't stop, until the entire globe is one monoculgoverncorp. There hasn't been a President, nor will there be one, who won't have to do that.
I'd vote for you, you have some good ideas. But even if you got in, which you wouldn't, you'd have to give all those promises up anyway. Then I'd get disillusioned, vote for the next guy that came along with promises, and then watch in shock as the process repeats itself. Then get disillusioned....

4. Hey, don't waste your vote, vote Phil...! |

I'd promise to keep all my promises, then I'd see to it that I would be forced to obey them, or I'm outta there.

Top goals, in no particular order.
The United States should be a global leader in the move towards worldwide democratic governance. I would continue to encourage fledgling democracies and pressure for reform among dictatorships and make clear to democratic reformers around the world that the United States will support them in the fight for freedom (be it in soft or hard power). I would continue to support both Iraq and Afghanistan, and encourage both countries developing democracies.
Invade Sudan to stop the genocide in Darfur. For all the reminiscing about Rwanda, no one has done a thing to stop the violence. The government of Sudan has shown itself to be entirely unwilling to protect its citizens, thus it should not control most of Sudan. Sudan will be divided after the invasion, south and west Sudan will become it's own nation free of the Sudanese governments tyranny. In return the United States will gain exclusive rights to Free Sudan's oil exports for 20 years. This is the price for their freedom, and will make Republicans happy, so I can claim to be bipartisan.
Create a guest worker program for Mexicans to work in the United States, and make it part of an eventual path to citizenship. Current illegals would be allowed to apply. Encourage Mexicans to learn english, and make it clear english speakers will have a much easier time gaining citizenship. This will both help to ease the transition into American society and help to dissuade fear of a cultural takeover. At the same time I would aggressively go after illegal immigrants to drive people into the legal program.
Promote free market economic reform in the United States and abroad. To start I would work to eliminate US tariffs and subsidies in agriculture to show the developing world we can take our own medicine. Our failure to do this is a major source of criticism from the global south. I would also eliminate the ridiculous embargo on Cuba.
