Men may be banned from daring to bare their chests
Now I find this to be scary.

By STEVE DOUGHTY, Daily Mail

16:31pm 26th July 2006

Men may be barred from baring their chests - and stomachs - in public under new local laws being considered by town halls.

They would stop men stripping off their shirts in crowded town centres and give powers to police to remove any who defy the cover-up laws.

The proposal has been inspired by the least attractive side effect of the heatwave - the tendency of a number of often middle-aged men to go about in nothing more than shorts and trainers.

Last week the Daily Mail highlighted the wave of revulsion among most of the public at the summer's least welcome fashion trend, and pictured a series of the worst examples in the hope of shaming offenders into keeping their T-shirts on.

Anti-social

Now local authorities have been circulated with a scheme for using by-laws to require shirts in town centres and to brand men who won't wear them as anti-social.

The laws would operate in a similar manner to local statutes that ban drinking on the streets or which prevent gangs of youths from congregating.

The politician behind the plan is former local government minister Nicholas Bennett, who has canvassed councils across the country for support.

10. It's in the imagination of the Daily Mail
It's a 'proposal' from a local councillor, who runs a property company, and thinks "You would see a big difference in the shopping centre if they were made to put a shirt on." But the officials in his own council "have responded warily". Which would seem to mean they're not actually considering it.

The Daily Mail is a reactionary tabloid that reguarly prints complete bollocks. When this appears in a reliable news source, it might be worth talking about.

2. If women can't do it, then why can men.
In most parts of Europe, women can take their tops off while sunbathing.

Strikes me as healthy more than sexy.

5. Well I don't get why women can't,
But that is a really an unpopular opinion to have. However my wife really enjoyed it when we visited a nudist camp.

4. Small bites of freedom.
Until nothing is left but rules, regulation, laws, and punishment.

It's ok while they're taking away freedoms you don't appreciate. What happens when it's something you take for granted?

7. oh, in Britain...
still...who thinks that any law like this will be applied equally?

Take a 25-year-old guy with washboard abs and a 45-year-old with a bit of a guy and copious body hair...who's actually going to be "removed"?
