I think I know what the problem is with this country . . .
What is the "Most E-mailed Story" in today's New York Times at this moment? Hint: It isn't Israel/Lebanon, Iraq, *, Diebold, etc.

Lack of interest in real problems and preference for becoming insular in one's home and one's special world demostrate apathy even among the more literary and intellectual demographics in this society.

1. Besides apathy, just pure selfishness. If it doesn't directly apply to me,
right now, then I'm not interested in it.

2. Hey at least it's not a pic of Paris Hilton's cooch....
or something similar. Everybody needs to eat.

3. At least the story's "news you can use." I would've sworn that...
the most e-mailed story today would be the "Lance Bass is gay" story.

4. Here's the most e-mailed photo according to Yahoo!News:

5. I watched "sometimes in April"& struck by 1 part in particular
Wa, DC, radio announcing Kurt Cobain's suicide while genocide is happening in Rwanda. That movie shows how insulated we are.

6. overload
I think many people are overloaded with events, news and information these days. It's just too much happening right now. Too overwhelming. I think, too that there might be a sudden realization by what's left of the middle class that everything's transitory, including our standard of living, gasoline and sustainability issues, the environment, etc. Much easier for these folks to ignore and avoid. Seems like this year is sort of a 1929 and a 1932 and a 1938 all rolled into one.

7. To be fair, it does mention Lebanon
"This is the taco al pastor, closer to what we think of as a gyro, with shaved spit-roasted pork or goat. (This was probably introduced by the Spaniards or, even more likely, the Lebanese, who emigrated to Mexico in significant enough numbers beginning in the late 19th century so that there are Lebanese neighborhoods in most major cities.)"
