UN Resolutions 1559 and 1680 - Pathways to Solving This Crisis!
Edited on Wed Jul-26-06 05:35 PM by oberliner
Kofi Annan:

A donor framework would be established, with immediate effect, to secure funding for an urgent package of aid, reconstruction and development for Lebanon, he continued. A mechanism would also be established, composed of key regional and international actors, to monitor and guarantee the implementation of all aspects of the agreement. An international conference should be organized, with broad national and international participation, to develop precise timelines for a speedy and full implementation of the Taef agreement and further measures needed for Lebanon to comply with its international obligations under Council resolutions 1559 and 1680. The conference would also endorse a delineation of Lebanon’s international borders, including a final resolution on all disputed areas, especially the Shebaa Farms.

Any thoughts on this or other proposals towards a solution to this crisis?

Note: Thoughtful and rational debate, discussion, and discourse is welcome.

Example: Israel needs to withdraw all its forces immediately, stop the bombing that has killed so many civilians and withdraw from Lebanon before there can be any talk of implementing these resolutions.

Other types of comments are unwelcome on this thread.

Example: F*ck Israel. Like Israel gives a sh*t what the UN says; they are in violation of every UN resolution and are intentionally bombing their outposts in Lebanon. Remember the USS Liberty!

Is there any way to have a civil discussion about any of this? I hope there is.

2. That won't solve anything. UN 242 will solve it.
When will that be implemented?

I completely agree with you.

Israel should withdraw from the territories occupied in 1967 and there should be a termination of all claims or states of belligerency and respect for and acknowledgement of the sovereignty, territorial integrity and political independence of every State in the area and their right to live in peace within secure and recognized boundaries free from threats or acts of force.

I'm glad we are able to find areas of agreement in spite of our other disagreements.

For others that may not be familiar with the resolution, here is a link to the text of UN 242:

6. Sounds like 1999.
Even to the point of saying that since Hezbollah disagrees with a UN committee saying that Israel was indeed in compliance with a UN resolution, well, the UN committee certainly must be in error. Must revise history to make sure Israel was never in compliance.

Kofi takes all of Allah's Help that he can get, with gratitude. Talk about submission.

Otherwise, everything is exactly what was called for 6 or 7 years ago. Even to holding an international conference and a robust international peacekeeping force whose mission is to ensure full withdrawal of Israel, disarmament of Hezbollah, and to assist Lebanon in establishing control of its nether portions. Impotent then, impotent now.

The only difference is that Hezbollah will start off with prestige, weapons, and most of an infrastructure, and will wind up in a much better position; Lebanon is nominally independent, but also seems to love the on-going Party of Allah and having Allah's Help on top.

Party on, Hassan.
