an email from a friend
Edited on Wed Jul-26-06 06:43 PM by yorkiemommie1
... she feels guilty because there is " no hunger, no war, no unemployment, no national crisis. '' She finds this a 'quiet time'.

Well of course I send her a LONG reply ranging on almost every topic we discuss here from the rogue presidency to the sale of our highways to foreigners.

We live in the midst of SoCal. We are surrounded by every method of gaining information that there is! We work in a SCHOOL!

She is one of my friends but I do find that when I bring up serious topics, the subject is changed.

My jaw is still on the floor.

edited for spelling.

1. Yeah; it's called 'denial'. Hope she doesn't flip when she wakes up.

2. Sounds like one of those people who can't see beyond
her upturned nose.

And with no sense of compassion at all.

9. she's got grandkids
she's gone down to Mexico to clean up an orphanage, but that was at her daughter's urging, so she must have seen hunger there, even tho I reminded her that there is hunger right under our very noses.

I don't know if she's getting her personal life mixed up w/ world issues,or if she's separating them, but world issues bother ME plenty; they are an integral part of my personal life.

7. she's almost 60, as am I
When we discuss personal problems, she has shown great insight and has been sensitive and helpful, and she is a LOT of fun.

But on this other level there has got to be some major denial going on. She reads the LA TIMES ( OK, bad but at least it lets you know bad things are happening! )

She ended her email by throwing her hands up in the air and saying that in this 'quiet time' she is wondering if a crisis would erupt and how she 'could help' Then she closed by writing, ' oh well i'll go eat my chocolate bar'.

Our office is 99.99% Dem. She voted for * but she's not a fundie or a rabid right winger, so this email has literally floored me.

And dismayed me because if people like this cannot see what is before their EYES, then I dunno. I will never give up, and I wrestled w/ answering her email w/ all that info, but where else can we start but at the grassroots? I feel totally broadsided.

8. Geez, Louise, yorkiemommie1. I don't know then how you can
help this woman. It doesn't sound like she is deliberately ignoring what is going on, but man...don't send an email out to people saying there is nothing going on, when obviously, there is...

You did send her reports about the 2 wars going on right now, right? And, you did send her reports about places all over the world where there is hunger every day, right? There is always hunger, even here in America, for crying out loud....

Geez, let us know of any breakthroughs, okay?

Good luck with this one..I know she's your friend, but by golly, miss molly!

10. yup, i updated her on everything
Edited on Wed Jul-26-06 06:52 PM by yorkiemommie1
she has a teenage grandson! she has five other grandkids, and I mentioned the deficit and how the next generationS are going to be paying for them.

Ohhhh... yeah, I ran the gamut. I didn't lecture or rant,or get snotty, I just told her that those were the issues I worry about.

Edited to add here's what I wreplied:

Wow. I have tons to worry about. We're
facing a constitutional crisis, and yes, we
are 'at war' or rather, occupying a country
and thousands are dying on both sides. And
there is the deficit which our great
grandchildren will be paying for. The attack
on women's choice and the increasing
influence of the religous right wing,
Diebold voting machines, gerrymandering,
corruption beyond belief, a rogue
administration that is hankering for yet
more war- ( RE: PNAC and Richard Perle ),
the increasing attacks on the middle class (
they've cut in half the numbers of IRS
agents who audit the wealthy so as to pay
them back for their political support ) not
to mention the tax cuts for the rich,
outsourcing, an increase in presidential
powers ( 800 plus signing statements - more
than any of the previous presidents COMBINED
- Arlen Spector is preparing to sue the
president on this issue ), cutbacks in
clean air, clean water, protection for the
wildlands and wild creatures. The proposed
sale of some AIRPORTS to foreigners and the
sale of some highways and toll roads to
FOREIGNERS.
Did you read the TImes on Sunday where more
college graduates are unable to find jobs?
And there is plenty of hunger around, here
in our own city, probably. One of my
friends operates a soup kitchen. We only
need to look to see what is out there.
I could go on and on. I am suffering thru
the worst years of my life seeing what's
going on. I fear for the coming generations
as well as the rest of our lives.
