Israeli justice minister says world gave Israel green light to continue offensive

LAURIE COPANS, Associated Press Writer

JERUSALEM (AP) - Israel must unleash massive air strikes against villages in southern Lebanon to clear out Hezbollah gunmen, the justice minister said Thursday . . .

''We received yesterday at the Rome conference permission from the world ... to continue the operation, this war, until Hezbollah won't be located in Lebanon and until it is disarmed,'' he told Israel Army Radio. ''Everyone understands that a victory for Hezbollah is a victory for world terror.''

Asked whether entire villages should be flattened, he said: ''These places are not villages. They are military bases in which Hezbollah people are hiding and from which they are operating.''

Ramon said Israel has given civilians in southern Lebanon sufficient warning to leave the area, and that those left behind should be considered Hezbollah sympathizers. ''All those now in south Lebanon are terrorists who are related in some way to Hezbollah,'' he said.

However, it is believed that civilians remain in these communities. A Red Cross doctor who visited the town of Bint Jbail before the Israelis advanced on it this week said the majority of residents had fled, but a considerable number were taking cover in schools and other places.

12. I wonder if they were sincere
I hope their support for Israel's assault on Lebanon isn't just positioning for the upcoming elections

14. I do believe that's their wrongheaded thinking; I wish their
interests weren't so self-serving.

16. I wonder about the silent split that may occur
between those who can't stomach the support for Israel's actions and those (albeit in the majority now) who are cheering them on?

I also question this early, uncritical support by some. This conflict can turn quickly.

17. Reminds me of Iraq; there are many Dems who will forever regret
their initial vote. They do seem to be walking in lockstep w/the admin; have they learned nothing, given the fact that everything this admin touches turns to poop?

11. It's a nice thought
but really, each and every one of us have very little to say in the matter. These are decisions made in secret. With each rotation of the planet, each and every one of us has less and less to do with the way the world works.

15. we pay for it with our tax dollars, and our 'leaders' act in our proxy
so you can't just disassociate yourself from it.

Make no mistake: The so-called 'War on Terror' is being carried out in your name and mine. Every casualty is, in part, the fault of each and every one of us, IMO.

Just my two cents...

6. but we DO count... that's the problem... the bombs Israel uses are
US military ordnance.

Billions of our tax dollars have gone to Israel that are being used to fuel this.

And the US seal of approval was stamped on by the WH and Congress.

The latter are acting for us by proxy, whether we like it or not.

Which means that, indeed, we are involved, whether we like it or not.

7. He is delusional
"Asked whether entire villages should be flattened, he said: ''These places are not villages. They are military bases in which Hezbollah people are hiding and from which they are operating.''"

Israel has all the tact & diplomatic finesse as the bu$h administration. If Israel really wanted peace, they are powerful enough there would be peace.

10. Yes, Israel! The whole world is backing you!
Well, apart from the 6.2 billion people outside the US. And several million inside it who don't seem to have a say.

But they don't matter! On with the slaughter! More death! More dead babies!

19. One more lie
The vote for the cease fire was three against; 189 for so what fugging world support is Israel speaking about now.

Even criticism does not shake these war criminals.

28. EU official: Israel misinterpreted our declaration at Rome summit
<snip>

"Israel has drawn the wrong conclusions from statements made at the summit held in Rome this week on the Middle East crisis, a European Union official said Thursday.

Finnish Foreign Minister Erkki Tumioja, whose country currently holds the EU presidency, said the Israeli government's interpretation of the summit's declaration as permission to continue its offensive is "their own and wrong interpretation."

The summit's final statement called for a United Nations force to be deployed in southern Lebanon to aid the country in implementing UN decisions on disarming Hezbollah. The statement also called for increased humanitarian aid to Lebanon."
