Normally it's just the pics on BagNews Notes that interest me, but in this case it's Shaw's insight into Rice's state of mind:

Considering Rice's extraordinary rigidity and self-control, the question is, to what specifically can we attribute this straining?

"From what I saw of the briefing -- and considering the defiant, "pre-recorded" and yet tremulous tone in her voice -- I have some new thoughts on Rice's M.O. The anxiety here, I believe, comes less from a deficit in stature then the refusal to empathize. In times of great crisis, diplomats require one another to extend some reasonable amount of humanity. If Rice is chafing, it's because she can't go there.

My ears stay clogged for at least three days. The old trick of pinching closed the nose and trying to blow them open does not work for me. I get a mega sinusitis and a monster headache from the canned air. I could say serves her right but I am in a good mood today and will let the universe do it for me.

Considering the general malaise shown in the first picture, it occurred to me that the 'beans and rice' (or whatever the fare was) from the previous night might be attempting to making a comeback (and exert it's dominance in the contest of wills). In any case, she certainly wasn't exhibiting her usual rigid control over her physical presence, what with all the self-touchy-feely. What was behind it would be rather interesting.

You can't send a Secretary of State over with that kind of message under these conditions. It's absolutely appalling. If Rice had any integrity she would either disobey or resign in protest.

22. I'm going to give her the benefit of the doubt and say

she has some sinus issue, whether a cold, allergies or whatever brings them up.

She's too cold-hearted and robotic to display any emotions except full fanged anger when she's cornered like when Barbara Boxer threw her own words in her face. Then you saw the barely restrained hatefulness in her face when she huffed about her integrity being questioned.
