Global Warming Professor: My Findings Have Been Distorted
Op-Ed Contributor
Cold, Hard Facts
Michael Kupperman

By PETER DORAN
Published: July 27, 2006
Chicago

IN the debate on global warming, the data on the climate of Antarctica has been distorted, at different times, by both sides. As a polar researcher caught in the middle, I’d like to set the record straight.

....................

In a rebuttal in The Providence Journal, in Rhode Island, the lead author of the Science paper and I explained that our studies offered no evidence that the earth was cooling. But the misinterpretation had already become legend, and in the four and half years since, it has only grown.

Our results have been misused as “evidence” against global warming by Michael Crichton in his novel “State of Fear” and by Ann Coulter in her latest book, “Godless: The Church of Liberalism.” Search my name on the Web, and you will find pages of links to everything from climate discussion groups to Senate policy committee documents — all citing my 2002 study as reason to doubt that the earth is warming. One recent Web column even put words in my mouth. I have never said that “the unexpected colder climate in Antarctica may possibly be signaling a lessening of the current global warming cycle.” I have never thought such a thing either.

........................

In the meantime, I would like to remove my name from the list of scientists who dispute global warming. I know my coauthors would as well.

Peter Doran is an associate professor of earth and environmental sciences at the University of Illinois at Chicago.

2. Hey, just because he denies saying it
doesn't mean he didn't. Don't you know, a first-hand rebuttal by the author never deters the RWnut faction who knows better the truth of what someone says.

13. Crichton writes fiction, even when he thinks it's fact.
He should have stuck to medicine. Perhaps he was good at that.

"State of Fear"....

Some rubbish about EVIL environmentalists wanting to wipe out life on earth or some such crap.

A badly written, ill-researched, disgusting little piece of propaganda...But par for the course from the likes of Crichton....

I remember, this one environmental news group I was on had this one libertarian guy who would bring it up as an answer to everything global warming related....
As though its some established, seminal piece of work on the environmental sciences....

Crichton is truly loathesome...:puke:

I don't blame people for buying into his crap though...he can be more convincing than the likes of Coulter or Limbaugh on paper overall....
Makes him all the more dangerous...these people have ABSOLUTELY no respect for facts.

Surely this hurts his professional reputation and therefore give him grounds.

11. Thanks, I've made good use of this
I added the information to the article about Doran in Wikipedia: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Peter_Doran

And, OK, call me superficial, but I included Doran's observation that Coulter was one of those who'd misinterpreted his paper.

scientific community....
Pity for the Stossels and the Coulters of the world that he has absolutely NO credibility on this issue...

Shit I would be a "skeptic" too if I was being paid 2500 dollars an hour as consulting fees by petro corps..:sarcasm:

http://www.sourcewatch.org/index.php?title=Richard_S._Lindzen

I sympathise with the true scientists and academics like Dr.Doran whose work is distorted by disgustoids like Coulter and Crichton for their filthy
RW agenda....may they rot in hell....

Kicked and recommended

22. I've seen comments on other sites too, referencing Crichton's book.
I knew nothing about it, but didn't believe for a minute there was probably anything credible enough to debunk global warming in it. Now I know for sure.

I'm glad Mr. Doran finally put this out on the record.
