Newt's Advice to Dems: "Had Enough?"
Edited on Thu Jul-27-06 05:21 PM by Jack_Dawson
Former Speaker Newt Gingrich, who helped catapult House Republicans into the majority with his 1994 "Contract With America," told Time.com what Democrats should campaign on in 2006: "What they are going to try to do, what they should do, is say nothing except 'Had enough?'" It seems like Democrats -- whose first slogan was "Together, America Can Do Better" and who have also campaigned against a Republican "culture of corruption" -- are following Gingrich's advice to an extent.

Give him this much...the man is not stupid. Although of course Dems can't boil anything down to one sentence, let alone two words. And I'm sorry but "A New Direction" is fucking weak. Please hire me as communications director.

1. We've certainly had enough of YOU, Newt
Edited on Thu Jul-27-06 04:39 PM by rocknation
You seem to forget you're a dead pundit walking. And that anything you say about the Dems has a built-in bias. And be careful that you don't inspire the Dems to run on CLEANING UP the GOP culture of corruption!

7. Exactly.
Imagine that - a succinct Democratic message. Even if it's really an anti-message.

5. He sure howled when they used that phrase on an ad showing flag draped
coffins. Oh how he howled and in fact the Democrats took that ad down because of the ruckus Newt and the rest of the Republican chickenhawks caused over it..

11. The sticker came from the DNC. I'm sure everyone who
was a member got one. How much more "all" do you want?

It's not the slogan, it's the means by which we disseminate that slogan. That's what's missing. The media is not oour friend. We release agendas, and the media not only ignore them, but continue to say that we don't have a plan. Having had enough isn't enough. People want to know our plan.

BTW, was that meant to be a wisecrack re: Kerry, perchance? It doesn't make a ton of sense otherwise in the context of the discussion.

Just illustrating how The Machine works...how they all read from the same script whether or not wtf they're saying has a shred of truth.

14. Ah, gotcha
Which is one of the reasons I didn't know if anything Kerry could have said would have made a difference, smear vet-wise.

But still, if you see what I mean, it would be nice to have our own Machine.

22. People are idiots, unfortunately. There are many, many sheeple.
The American public is largely uninformed and disengaged from politics.

"Had Enough?" is perfect for all levels of American citizenry.

20. For all his faults, Newt is right about the slogan. The 6 in 6 is STUPID!
I'm firmly convinced that the Dem leadership either is employing a PR firm that is purposefully horrible or doesn't employ a PR firm at all for their "messaging."

"Had Enough?" is PERFECT.

"Six in 2006" means NOTHING TO ANYONE and only requires a torturous explanation that leaves people snoozing.

The apparently developmentally delay Dem leadership message machine frustrates me to no end. Quite simply, they couldn't properly advertise for a lemonaid stand.
