We are not heading to World War whatever. The conflict will remain a regional conflict in the Mideast, and eventually Israel will succumb to international pressure and stop retaliating/escalating. There will be tension, yes, and skirmishes, and isolated incidents of kidnappings or rocket attacks and reprisals, but that's as far as it will go. I do not see this going nuclear.
If anything, the fledgling democracy movements in Iran and Lebanon may be inspired by the stupidity of this situation to get the Mullahs out of power in Iran, and put some serious restrictions on Hezbollah in Lebanon. I think young people over there are sick of all the dying and mayhem and neverending cycle of violence.
Terror cells will still strike here and (mostly) there (Europe), but probably not on the scale of 9/11. We and our allies will continue to find and disrupt terrorist cells and operations across the globe, but they're not as dangerous as we have been led to believe anyway.
Domestically, the economy is going to keep cooling off, which will suck. I think the only thing that may revive the labor market for some people is when the Boomers start retiring in 5 to 10 years and we have a labor shortage in some key areas. Sadly, I think that's the only way greedy, penny-pinching employers are going to increase the miserly wages they pay.
Midterm elections will see the Democratic party taking back the Senate and making pretty good inroads in the House. I have no idea what will happen in the presidential race in 2008. I just think, for Congress and for the presidency, the vast majority of Americans are bone weary of the strident partisan nature of most campaigns, from both sides. Hopefully, Americans will not take the bait on divisive, secondary issues that politicians try to ramp up into hot-button, emotional vote getters...like stem cell research, flag-burning, gay marriage, and abortion, to name a few.
Hopefully, the electorate will say, "enough with that crap. We have some real problems, and we need candidates who will offer some real, common-sense solutions. Our budget deficit is too damn big. Foreign countries own too much of our debt. Our government spends too much money. We're mired down in a war that doesn't seem to have an end halfway across the world. Our kids are not prepared to compete in a high-tech, global economy. And we still have millions of our own citizens who cannot afford health insurance. These are serious problems. We want you, Washington Wanna-Be, to tell us exactly how you propose we ALL WORK TOGETHER to fix them."
I have a dream that we start focusing on SOLUTIONS, and stop wasting time with candidates who can only gripe about the problems (or, even worse, candidates who ignore the problems altogether).
But I still think, regardless of the idiot that has been in the White House for the last 6 years, regardless of the damage we've done around the world (to others and to our own reputation), we are still a damn good country. We're still one of the best places to live. Millions yearn to come here just to have what we have--what we take for granted and often scorn. We are better and greater than the political party that happens to be in power. We are America, a nation founded upon the principles of freedom and liberty, and we will return to and learn again, as a nation, to cherish and protect those principles.
Or, then again, I could be full of guano, and we'll all be charcoal briquets in a few months.
