Paul Krugman: Reign of Error

--The New York Times, July 28, 2006

Amid everything else that’s going wrong in the world, here’s one more piece of depressing news: a few days ago the Harris Poll reported that 50 percent of Americans now believe that Iraq had weapons of mass destruction when we invaded, up from 36 percent in February 2005. Meanwhile, 64 percent still believe that Saddam had strong links with Al Qaeda.

At one level, this shouldn’t be all that surprising. The people now running America never accept inconvenient truths. Long after facts they don’t like have been established, whether it’s the absence of any wrongdoing by the Clintons in the Whitewater affair or the absence of W.M.D. in Iraq, the propaganda machine that supports the current administration is still at work, seeking to flush those facts down the memory hole.

But it’s dismaying to realize that the machine remains so effective.

Here’s how the process works...

1. And those who get their information from limbaugh and faux
also believe that Valerie Plame was a desk jockey and her husband is a communist American Hater. The job of the history rewriters is quite easy because of the expansive ignorance of today's "conservative" populace who apparently are too lazy to research and have no desire to handle the truth.

2. I Love Krugman, But He's Not Taking His Observations To Their Logical
conclusion:

"Who would have imagined that history would prove so easy to rewrite in a democratic nation with a free press?"

He's not adding 2+2. Mr. Krugman, we are no longer a Democratic Nation w/ a free press.

6. I have this friend, dear soul, but a constant fibber. Marilyn was born to
lie. Ask her the time of day and she will fib. Ask about a grocery store purchase, receive a piece of fiction. Ask about an event, hear a carefully embellished retelling. Marilyn is a hit at parties, and always tells the greatest stories. Everyone is amused. It's funny to hear her recall an event or a situation featuring Marilyn and yourself. As the story is told the situations get spun, the events get embellished and your participation is enlivened just a tad. At first you may question Marilyn's narrative--good natured-ly of course, but in time begin participating in the subterfuge. It's just a story, can't hurt anyone, right? Over time the tale takes a life of its own. Your story character has changed so much you begin to disassociate yourself from your fictional character and your own real-life persona. There comes a time when the disconnect hits you square in the face. The event that happened and the event Marilyn is describing are two different things, fact and fiction. What to do? Expose the falsehood and rouse embarrassing questions? Expose the falsehood and expose your participation in the dishonesty? You can picture your lying self, vulnerable and unprotected. But ultimately, silence is golden, and apathy and acquiescence go hand-in-hand. The lie becomes convenient. Avoiding the truth is easier than speaking out and correcting the record. So the story gets spun yet again, further from the truth with each telling. And as the truth disappears, you get to the point that you can't even afford a parting glance.

8. This is what you need to see on 60 Minutes. We have to make this
an issue, and it will be FoxNew's downfall once people start to connect the misinformation to their news station.
