help me write a LTTE about record oil profits and bush "jawboning opec"
our local rag had some editorial about how the high gas prices are our own fault. I want to set the record straight and blame it on big oil and tie bushy to it.

all suggestions welcome. There is so much crap these days that my mind is just full of things that don't come out right

1. I would start by googling "oil company profits, Exxon Mobile"
That will get your rage up & help you focus. When your letter's complete, post it here for feedback & suggestions prior to submitting.

Good luck!

2. Heres some stuff I wrote on my blog...
Feel free to use any of it if you want.

While on the campaign trail in 2000 with gas prices averaging $1.44 per gallon, a certain failed Texas oilman had a little advice for President Clinton:

- “What I think the president ought to do is he ought to get on the phone with the OPEC cartel and say we expect you to open your spigots. And the president of the United States must jawbone OPEC members to lower the prices." -George 6/00

- "This is an administration that has been in charge, and the price of gasoline has risen steadily since they've been in office. I would use the capital my administration will earn with the Kuwaitis or the Saudis, to convince them to open up the spigot. That's where we will get immediate relief." -George 6/28/00

- "I would hope the administration would convince our friends in OPEC to open the spigots." -George 6/22/00

These statements (made during the 2000 Presidential campaign) are a clear indicator of at least 3 things:

#1- George believes a sitting president has the ability to "jawbone" OPEC to lower oil prices which will provide "immediate relief" from high gas prices.
#2- Because of his close ties to the oil industry, Young George believes he is in fact *uniquely qualified* to do said "jawboning."
#3- Georgies' Word Of the Week was "spigot."

In 2005 - four+ years after Uncle Dickies' Secret Energy Task Force meetings and with gas prices averaging $2.10/Gallon, georges' attitude shifted ever so slightly:
"I wish I could simply wave a magic wand and lower gas prices tomorrow. I'd do that" -George 4/20/05

Now, in 2006 with gas averaging $2.90/Gallon and his friends in the oil industry reaping record profits, george is still searching for that elusive "magic wand" instead of "jawboning" OPEC to open their "spigots" (which would provide "immediate relief" for consumers.)

"'I know gas prices are high. There's no magic wand to wave." -George 4/25/06

“Let us rid ourselves of the fiction that low oil prices are somehow good for the United States.”–Dick Cheney 10/86

3. Point out that this is a promise Bush didn't keep (lie).
He said he would "jawbone" with OPEC leaders to lower gas prices when it was about $1.75 / gal.

Encourage the readers to have an open mind and look at all the other promises that have been broken (lies).

Consider your audience to be republicans. They are the ones you want to convince.

4. Don't forget that the Republicans voted for massive tax breaks to
oil companies ... and then less than two weeks later, the oil companies had RECORD PROFITS (mind you, PROFITS - after all costs figured)
