Tell our Leaders to ACT NOW in Lebanon!

Sign the petition below and your message, with the graphic at left, will be publicized in newspapers in the US, UK, and Israel.

The world cannot allow the bloodshed in the Middle East to continue. Thousands of innocent civilians have been killed and wounded, 500,000 made homeless, and a catastrophic larger conflict is possible. We call on US President Bush, UK Prime Minister Blair and Israeli Prime Minister Olmert to support UN Secretary-General Kofi Annan's call for an immediate ceasefire and an international force to stabilize the situation.

Dear friends,

Right now a tragedy is unfolding in the Middle East. Hundreds of civilians have died in the bombings in Lebanon, Israel and Palestine and the death toll is rising every day.

UN Secretary General Kofi Annan has called for an immediate ceasefire and UK Prime Minister Tony Blair has joined Annan in calling for the deployment of international troops to the Israel-Lebanon border. This is the best proposal yet to stop the violence, but for it to succeed other global leaders need to get behind it immediately.

I have just signed a petition urging regional and global leaders to speak out and support Kofi Annan's proposal. If people around the world can persuade their governments to unite in demanding a ceasefire, all sides in this conflict will be pressured to stand down. Can you sign the petition too?

http://www.ceasefirecampaign.org

The petition will be sent to key regional and global leaders and publicized in major newspapers in the Middle East, US and Europe. With enough signatures we can help pressure our leaders to stop the violence.

Yours truly,
John

CCR CONDEMNS HUMANITARIAN LAW VIOLATIONS IN THE CURRENT MIDDLE EAST CONFLICT & CALLS ON BUSH TO STOP ARMING ISRAEL IN VIOLATION OF AMERICAN LAW
CCR Condemns Attacks on Civilians and Calls on All Parties to Abide by International Law

Synopsis

On July 27, 2006 the Center for Constitutional Rights (CCR) called for all parties to respect international humanitarian law in the current Middle East conflict and urged President Bush to halt the supply of weapons to Israel in violation of the Arms Export Control Act (AECA). In a letter to President Bush and Secretary of State Condoleezza Rice, CCR noted that defense articles provided to Israel are not being used for internal security or self defense purposes, as required by the AECA, and demanded that the President comply with his legal obligation to immediately cease all sales and deliveries of weapons to Israel. (The entire letter is below.)

To join CCR in calling for an investigation into the supply of weapons to Israel in violation of the Arms Export Control Act (AECA) click here.

CCR also released the following statement regarding the conflict and international law violations:

In its 40 year history CCR has been a leading advocate of international law, including humanitarian law, or the "laws of war". The bedrock principle of humanitarian law is the obligation to distinguish between civilian and military objectives in the conduct of armed conflict. That principle is being shamelessly violated by all parties to the current conflict, including Israel, Hezbollah, and other groups. However, any objective assessment of the facts on the ground must lead to the conclusion that Israel's conduct cannot be equated in any way with that of its enemies but is vastly superior in its catastrophic consequences.

In waging war against the civilian population of Lebanon and its infrastructure, Israel is violating not only the principle of distinction between military and civilian targets, but also the principle of necessity, which forbids action greater than that required to achieve a military objective, the principle of proportionality, which forbids action disproportionate to the antecedent provocation, as well as the prohibition of collective punishment.

The media report hundreds of civilian casualties, many of whom are women and children. Entire neighborhoods have been reduced to rubble. Five hundred thousand persons have been made homeless or fled whatever homes may still be standing. These are war crimes, for which those responsible should be held to account.

The Prime Minister of Lebanon, who has distanced himself from the actions of Hezbollah, says his country is being torn to shreds and is appealing to the international community to put an end to the slaughter and destruction. The failure of the United States to respond to this appeal, on the ground that "a cease fire would solve nothing", is unconscionable and makes the United States an accessory to the daily massacres in Gaza and Lebanon.

CCR does believe that until a just and equitable solution to the problems dividing Israel from its Palestinian and other Arab neighbors is reached, violence will be endemic to the region. But this does not justify the United States in effect giving Israel a green light to continue its assault on Gaza and Lebanon, while piously deploring "civilian casualties".

CCR is currently handling two cases involving previous violations of humanitarian law by the Israel Defense Forces (IDF). Last year CCR brought a case on behalf of the victims of the 1996 shelling of the U.N. compound in Qana, in the south of Lebanon, which killed over 100 civilians and wounded hundreds more. Approximately 800 displaced civilians had sought shelter there from the shelling of their villages by the IDF. (Belhas v. Ya'alon, D.D.C., 05 Civ. 02167). The attack on Qana has disturbing parallels with Tuesday's attack on a U.N. observation post that killed four U.N. observers. Israel claimed both attacks were accidental, despite the fact that each U.N. compound was clearly marked and had been there for many years, and that U.N. officials had contacted the IDF to tell them to stop shelling the area prior to the fatal attacks. Another case was brought by CCR on behalf of the victims of the bombing of the Al-Daraj neighborhood in Gaza in 2002, an attack that killed eight children and seven adults, and injured over 150 civilians. (Matar v. Dichter, S.D.N.Y., 05 Civ. 10270).

CCR has a long and effective record of working for human rights and international law around the world, including pioneering the use of the Alien Tort Claims Act of 1789 to represent victims of human rights crimes anywhere in the world.

The entire text of the letter to President Bush is below.

Re: Supply of Weapons to Israel in Violation of Arms Export Control Act

Dear President Bush and Secretary Rice,

I am writing regarding the weapons our Government is supplying to Israel in violation of the Arms Export Control Act (AECA). I write on behalf of the Center for Constitutional Rights (CCR), a non-profit organization that for over 40 years has been dedicated to protecting and advancing the rights guaranteed by the U.S. Constitution and the Universal Declaration of Human Rights. Defense articles provided to Israel are not being used for internal security or legitimate self-defense, as required by the AECA. The AECA prohibits sales or deliveries to a country that is in substantial violation of these authorized purposes. Rather than stopping the supply of weapons to Israel, as required by law, the United States Government is reportedly rushing additional weapons to Israel - an act that will result in further loss of innocent lives. CCR demands that you comply with your legal obligation to immediately cease all sales and deliveries of those items to Israel.

As you know, the U.S. provides Israel with billions of dollars in weapons and military aid annually. Israel is using U.S. supplied defense articles to attack civilians and civilian infrastructure, not for its internal security or legitimate self-defense. It is reported that Israel is attacking civilians using combat aircraft and weapons manufactured in and supplied by the United States, including Boeing F-15s, Lockheed Martin F-16s, AH-64 Apache attack helicopters, Sparrow and Sidewinder missiles, and M-109 self-propelled 155mm artillery. Israel's recent military campaign in Lebanon has already killed over 350 civilians and wounded more than 1,000 - nearly a third of whom are children. A major humanitarian crisis has resulted from the displacement of more than 500,000 people from their homes and the destruction of transportation infrastructure, power plants, and food and fuel sources. Israel is also shelling civilian areas and infrastructure in Gaza, including targeting a university and destroying Gaza's main electricity plant. At least 100 Palestinians have been killed and more than 500 have been injured since Israel launched military operations in Gaza on June 28th.

Under U.S. and international law, attacks on civilians are prohibited under all circumstances. Moreover, Israel failed to exhaust, or even attempt, alternative means to respond to the capture of its soldiers, and instead is using collective punishment against entire civilian populations. Upon receiving information that defense articles have not been used for internal security or legitimate self-defense, the President or Secretary of State must promptly report to Congress that a violation may have occurred. On three occasions, prior Presidents have determined that Israel may have violated its legal obligations to the United States as a result of its use of U.S. supplied weapons in Lebanon. Indeed, after Israel bombarded Lebanon with cluster bombs in 1982, President Reagan banned the sale of such weapons to Israel, a ban that remained in place until 1988. It has been reported that Israel has recently attacked populated areas in Lebanon with artillery-fired cluster bombs, some of which have been supplied by the U.S. This Administration must enforce Israel's compliance with its agreements to ensure that U.S. supplied defense articles are not used for unauthorized purposes.

In light of Israel's unauthorized use of U.S. weapons, the Center for Constitutional Rights is particularly appalled by recent reports that the Administration is expediting a delivery of satellite and laser-guided bombs to Israel. Under the AECA, the United States must suspend arms transfers to Israel, not expedite them to be used in the slaughter of more civilians. Israel's indiscriminate attacks on civilians are prohibited by international humanitarian law, and constitute war crimes. You should be aware that those parties who knowingly provide substantial assistance to the commission of such war crimes can also be held accountable. The U.S. Government must cease all sales and deliveries of defense articles to Israel.

CCR will continue to monitor these violations, advocate on behalf of civil and human rights, and fight for the consistent application of the fundamental principles of international humanitarian law.

Sincerely,

Michael Ratner, President
Bill Goodman, Legal Director
Center for Constitutional Rights

53. Amnesty International: Send a message to Israeli Authorities
End Attacks Against Civilians in Israel and Lebanon

Over the past few days, hundreds of Lebanese and over 15 Israeli civilians have reportedly been killed and hundreds more injured. Hizbullah has been firing Katyusha rockets at cities and towns in Northern Israel, resulting in the deaths of civilians, including eight railway workers killed in Haifa. At the same time, Israel has launched air and artillery strikes against villages, towns and cities throughout Lebanon causing many civilian deaths, including a family of seven Lebanese-Canadians who were killed when an Israeli bomb hit their house and fifteen villagers who were killed when their van was targeted by Israeli warplanes. Israeli forces have also launched attacks against civilian infrastructure throughout Lebanon, including Beirut International Airport, bridges, roads, fuel depots and gas stations and electrical generating facilities.

Israel and Hizbullah, as well as the Lebanese government, must take immediate steps to end the ongoing attacks against civilians and civilian targets. It is vital at this time of rapidly rising tension that all parties observe international humanitarian law which prohibits the targeting of civilians. Please take action now and send a letter to all sides asking them to stop attacks on civilians.

Oxfam Responds in Middle East, Calls for Ceasefire
24 July 2006

Oxfam is responding to help innocent people caught up in the escalating crisis in the Middle East. With our staff and partners we are providing practical help now -- and calling on all parties to the conflict to immediately cease the military attacks that are causing suffering to civilians in Lebanon, Gaza and Israel.
In Gaza, we are providing water and sanitation support, and providing for the formation of 2 additional emergency mobile medical teams. This will be used for medication and medical supplies, staff salaries and generators and fuel.
The humanitarian situation in Lebanon is becoming increasingly acute, with the World Health Organization estimating that over 600,000 people have fled their homes for safer areas. Oxfam has sent a rapid response team to the region which includes specialists in water & sanitation, livelihoods, public health, logistics and communications. The public health situation is of great concern as, although water is still generally available, sanitation facilities are limited. Oxfam’s public health specialists will urgently address this issue.
Most of the displaced people have come from areas in the south under bombardment, and have moved to Beirut and the north. In Beirut itself, where some areas have come under Israeli bombing many thousands are homeless. The majority are staying in schools and government buildings, with others settling in camps.
Additionally, we are working through our network of partner organizations in Lebanon, where Oxfam has been active since 1993, to coordinate the delivery of emergency assistance to families displaced by the conflict. This work will focus on providing humanitarian relief and support to displaced people sheltered in schools, mosques, with host families, and in refugee camps. To date Oxfam has committed $1,150,000 for vital distributions of food, bedding, clothing, medicine, hygiene supplies, with a particular emphasis on disabled people and other vulnerable groups

URGENT: LEBANON PALESTINE EMERGENCY FUND

For Immediate Release
July 27, 2006

The ongoing invasion of Lebanon by Israel has left hundreds of its
residents either dead or injured. Meanwhile, the 58-year Zionist
occupation of Palestine has escalated, bringing with it more death and
destruction for the Palestinian people.

Hundreds of thousands of Lebanese and Palestinians have been rendered

Since the siege of Gaza one month ago, the Palestinian death toll includes
more than 31 children, killed by the hand of the "Israeli" occupier.

Al-Awda, The Palestine Right to Return Coalition, calls on all people of

From Nation Magazine:
How to Help in Lebanon
By all accounts, Israel's disproportionate attack has caused a mounting humanitarian crisis in Lebanon. Hundreds of thousands of people have been displaced and with most of the country's infrastructure destroyed by air strikes, medical technicians willing to brave the bombings are facing great difficulties traversing crater-filled roads and burning bridges to even reach the thousands of wounded civilians.
How to help?
Nation columnist Naomi Klein as written an open letter urging support for the Sanayeh Relief Center, established by a group of non-sectarian Lebanese leftists. Sanayeh is providing relief at 27 schools in the city of Beirut, which are currently housing 9,117 displaced people--more than 1,000 under the age of five--from the southern regions of Lebanon and the southern suburbs of Beirut. Check out the ActNow blog for more info.

I hope you don't mind me piggy-backing your post...

UNICEF is asking for donations to help Lebanese children.

They are concentrating on Lebanon because Israel is not a developing nation and does not qualify for aid. It is political and partisan, but not the way you would assume.

9. -------URGE PROGRESSIVE CAUCUS TO SUPPORT KUCINICH RESOLUTION ------

URGE PROGRESSIVE CAUCUS TO SUPPORT KUCINICH RESOLUTION ------
Dear Advocate of a Just Foreign Policy,

Some things that are worth doing can't be accomplished in one fell swoop.

As you know, the majority of members of the U.S. Congress have been largely unmoved by the suffering of civilians in Lebanon under bombardment by the Israeli air force, using weapons supplied by the the United States, while Secretary of State Rice blocks diplomatic initiatives aimed at an early cease-fire.

Many peace groups have called on their members to contact Congress in support of the Kucinich resolution, which backs an immediate cease-fire. The day it was introduced, the Kucinich resolution had 23 cosponsors. Today it has 30 cosponsors.

This is a beginning. But if we are refute the idea that the Israeli government has a blank check from the United States for its current policy, we need to increase this number.

Of the 30 cosponsors of the Kucinich resolution, 25 are members of the Congressional Progressive Caucus, a group of members of Congress that have committed themselves to re-build U.S. alliances, reaffirm engagement in the UN, enhance international cooperation, and bring U. S. troops home from Iraq.

There are 62 members in the Congressional Progressive Caucus.

In this alert, we ask you to focus your attention on the Progressive Caucus. The list of Progressive Caucus members who have not yet agreed to cosponsor the Kucinich resolution is below. The current list is at http://www.justforeignpolicy.org/issues/prog_cauc_noceasefire.xls.

If one of these members is your representative, call them and write them, and ask everyone you know to do the same by forwarding this alert. The Congressional switchboard is 202-225-3121. Ask to talk to your representative's office, and ask them to cosponsor the Kucinich resolution for an immediate ceasefire. To send an email, you can use this link: http://www.democracyinaction.org/dia/organizationsORG/justforeignpolicy.org/campaign.jsp?campaign_KEY=4697.

If one of these members is not your representative, look at the list of members below, which shows the cities they represent. The current list is at http://www.justforeignpolicy.org/issues/prog_cauc_noceasefire.xls. Go through your address book (or your memory), and think of anyone you know who lives in their district. Call them or forward them this alert and ask them to contact their representative, by calling at 202-225-3121, or by emailing them using this link: http://www.democracyinaction.org/dia/organizationsORG/justforeignpolicy.org/campaign.jsp?campaign_KEY=4697

Thank you for taking action. If we can get a clear majority of the Progressive Caucus on this resolution, we will have taken a significant step towards ending the blank check from the U.S. for attacks on civilians by the Israeli government.

Here is the list of Progressive Caucus members who have not yet signed the Kucinich resolution. The current list, including phone numbers, is at http://www.justforeignpolicy.org/issues/prog_cauc_noceasefire.xls.

------ GLOBAL EXCHANGE ------------
Dear Supporter

The political and humanitarian crisis in Gaza and Lebanon grows worse every day. The escalating violence has killed hundreds, mostly civilians, and is re-opening the dangerous schisms of the Lebanese civil war.

We call on all parties to ensure an immediate ceasefire. Bombing, rocket attacks, ground invasions, kidnappings and all other forms of violence must be suspended. TAKE ACTION NOW
Support the Kucinich resolution

Visit our Action Center for more Middle East actions
Sign the Voters Peace Pledge

First and foremost, as a human rights group, we condemn the killing of innocent civilians.
The numbers of innocents killed in this conflict are staggering:

• Eleven children were killed in Southern Lebanon by Israeli airstrikes. Read More

• Since last Wednesday, well over 250 Lebanese have been killed, primarily civilians. Read More

• A Canadian family of seven, including 4 small children, were killed when their vacation home in Lebanon was bombed. Read More

• The Gaza death toll has grown to over 100 since Israel re-deployed its troops into Gaza.
• Over two dozen Israelis have been killed, about half of which are civilians.

The UN is warning of an impending humanitarian crisis in Gaza and Lebanon. United Nations High Commissioner for Human Rights Louise Arbour today expressed grave concern over the continued killing and maiming of civilians in Lebanon, Israel and the occupied Palestinian territory and called for accountability for any breaches of international law. Read More

Global Exchange immediately calls for the U.S. government to:
• Demand an immediate ceasefire on all sides. All sides need to be held accountable to international law. The Bush administration needs to pressure Israel to show restraint and stop its disproportionate military actions in Lebanon and Gaza.
• Build international intervention NOW. We need to encourage the UN to deploy peace troops on the Lebanon/Israel border to facilitate a de-escalation, and commit to participate in regional diplomacy in multi-party negotiations.
• Work with the international community in building a lasting diplomatic peace in the region—one that includes withdrawing from Iraq and ending the occupation of Palestinian territories. We should show leadership, putting our security energies into building diplomacy in a region that desperately needs a just, lasting and comprehensive peace.

The Israeli attacks against civilians in Gaza and Lebanon are not legitimate self-defense.

Rather than targeting militants, the Israeli army is specifically bombing bridges, airports, sanitation facilities and power stations, even a milk factory, and has killed hundreds of civilians with no connection to Hezbollah. Retaliatory attacks that harm civilian populations and public infrastructure are forbidden by the Geneva Conventions.
Through our experience in the region, we have met a people that, on the whole, rejects violence. In fact, more than 50% of the population of Lebanese voters rejected Hezbollah in the last election, and the parliamentary majority is against the group’s actions. Cracking down on the civilian population of Beirut is not going to achieve any lasting solution.
The U.S. government’s response has been to block UN measures for peace. Last Thursday, July 13th, John Bolton, U.S. Ambassador to the UN, vetoed a resolution calling for all sides to exercise restraint. On Sunday, a UN attempt to call for a ceasefire between Israel and Hizbollah was once again blocked by the U.S.

This is not just a humanitarian crisis: it is a political crisis. Some have called Hizbollah a “front group” for Iran and Syria, and the Bush administration is tacitly threatening action against these countries. We fear that further polarizing the region will set up the groundwork for another U.S.-led war in the Middle East.
To get more involved contact Ceanna or visit the U.S. Campaign to End Israeli Occupation website at

Our hearts go out to everyone who is feeling the weight of this crisis.

Peace, Propaganda, and the Promised Land

The Normalization of Horror

What you`re not seeing on US TV

It`s a myth that all Jews and all Israelis support Israel`s ongoing military aggression in the Middle East, but you`ll never learn this fact on US TV.

Why?

This informative film (1:19:14) documents the current Israeli government`s program of genocide against the Palestinian people and its well orchestrated public relations program designed to insure that Americans - whose tax dollars subsidize the Israeli military - never learn the truth about Israeli tactics and intentions.

This is about the occupation, not the invasion, but put's it all into context :hi:

I understand that "ownership" of this crisis is being placed on the Lebanese. How can any rational thinker expect Lebanon's military (which doesn't even have a helicopter or plane) to "dismantle" Hezbollah when the Israeli military couldn't (or wouldn't) do it throughtout 12 YEARS of occupying Southern Lebanon? WTF? I want an answer to THAT question.

Here's another thought. What ever happened to the WAREHOUSES in IRAQ that stored munitions that our military was RESPONSIBLE for protecting? I'll tell you what happened...

Any other questions as to why Hezbollah has as many weapons as they do? Could it have been because of incompetent and negligent leadership of the US military? What did these jackasses think the people did with those WAREHOUSES full of weapons? Take them home and put them in a trophy case? For the love of God.......

God Bless us All.

SHIN BET VETOED SECRET ISRAELI-PALESTINIAN PEACE AGREEMENT
Israeli and Palestinian Sources Concur: Israel Made War Inevitable
The Omega Institute (OI), which works closely with the Institute for Policy Research for Development (IPRD), has learned from Israeli and Palestinian sources that just prior to the current crisis, senior Hamas leaders were in active dialogue with Israeli religious leaders in a round of bilateral peace negotiations. Israeli negotiators included Rabbi Menachem Froman, former deputy leader and co-founder of the Israeli Settler movement Gush Khatif; Rabbi David Bigman, head of the liberal religious Kibbutz movement Yeshiva at Ma’ale Gilboa; and Yitzhak Frankenthal, founder of the Arik Institute. Ongoing negotiations had resulted in a breakthrough peace “understanding”, which was to be announced at a press conference in Jerusalem to mark the launching of an extraordinary peace initiative. Israeli Prime Minister Olmert had been briefed extensively about the initiative by Frankenthal. Also due to attend the conference were Khaled Abu Arafa, the Palestinian Cabinet Minister for Jerusalem, Sheikh Muhamed Abu Tir, senior Hamas Member of the Palestinian Parliament, and other senior Palestinian delegates.
The meeting was to announce a joint Israeli-Palestinian call for the release of Corporal Gilad Shalit who had been abducted by Hamas in Gaza, along with proposals for the beginning of the release of all Palestinian prisoners. These measures were to precipitate unprecedented new peace negotiations on a framework peace agreement, drawn on the 1967 borders. The presence of Palestinian Cabinet Officers and senior Israeli religious leaders in contact with the Prime Minster was to underline the seriousness of this peace proposal on both sides.
Just hours before the meeting was due to start, the Israeli Shin Bet internal Security Service arrested Abu Tir and Abu Arafa and warned them not to attend the meeting, under threats of detention. The meeting, which offered a major opportunity to obtain Shalit’s release and launch a new framework for peace, was thrown into disarray. The next day, the Israeli Defence Force (IDF) invaded Gaza, and the day after both Abu Tir and Abu Arafa were abducted by Israeli forces, along with a third of the Palestinian Cabinet, provoking a predictable escalation of violence.
Israel simultaneously began conducting covert incursions on to Lebanese territory, provoking Hizbollah’s capture of two IDF soldiers. Credible sources confirm that the soldiers were not abducted on Israeli territory, but inside Lebanon. Like the scuppered peace negotiations, Western officials have ignored this, and misinformed the media. However, some reports corroborate the sources. Israeli officials, for instance, informed Forbes (12.7.06) that “Hezbollah captured two Israeli soldiers during clashes Wednesday across the border in southern Lebanon, prompting a swift reaction from Israel.”
“The revelations show that Palestinian and Lebanese actors were not principally responsible for the escalation of the current conflict”, said OI Director Graham Ennis. “Contrary to the misinformation disseminated by the Whitehouse and Whitehall, Israel vetoed unprecedented peace proposals that would have initiated a promising new framework for serious negotiations, and went on to provoke Palestinian and Lebanese groups into retaliations, that now threaten to escalate into a dangerous regional conflict.”

I hope you've saved every sentence of it to your journal. Lest it all get lost in the ongoing US media's abhorrant "fog" of war. This **must be seen and read by all** who care about this crisis.

Again, my deep appreciation to your immense efforts to keep this topic alive and visible.

29. Unbearable news, mom cat. Some people here have discussed
the two soldiers as being caught and kept INSIDE Lebanon already, but this news truly, truly confirms it.

It's absolutely overwhelming. Hope they won't be able to carry this off indefinitely. What a collossal sin against the world to indulge in such evil, murderous mischief.

No possible excuse for this, no matter how many furious voices enter the fray.

Thank you.

support the two soldiers taken hostage theory as the reason for this violence that is spiraling out of control. Instead the culprit seems to be Israel vetoing unprecedented peace proposals.

Demonstrators Protest US Opposition to Ceasefire in Lebanon

New York, July 29, IRNA

US-Lebanon-Demonstration
Thousands of demonstrators here Friday called on the US government not to hinder establishment of ceasefire in Lebanon and to help stop the massacre of Muslims.

The demonstrators gathered in front of the United Nations headquarters and then headed for Times Square.

A number of Jews and Christians accompanied protestors, who were carrying flags of Lebanon and Palestine as well as pictures of Hezbollah chief Seyed Hassan Nasrallah and late leader of Palestinians Sheikh Ahmad Yasin.

Women and children also took part in the demonstration, chanting slogans such as "US should leave the Middle East" and "Lebanon and Palestine should be freed".

British Muslims to protest against Israeli cricket team
(Reuters)

28 July 2006

LONDON - The Middle East conflict is threatening to spill over into the world of cricket. British Muslim students, angered by the Israeli bombardment of Lebanon, said on Friday they would protest against Israel’s cricket team when they play in a tournament in Scotland next month.

The Israelis are due to play five matches in the European second division championships from August 3-9.

“It is unthinkable for the Israeli cricket team to play in our backyard while these acts of aggression continue to take place,” said Faisal Hanja of the Muslim student group FOSIS.

“We plan to protest unless the proposed match is cancelled.” The European Cricket Council, which is organising the tournament, said it had no plans to bar the Israelis.

MIT Protest Targets Israel
Students, professors oppose Israel’s offensive in Lebanon and Gaza
Published On Friday, July 28, 2006 5:57 AM
By KATHERINE M. GRAY
Crimson Staff Writer

Over 60 people gathered by MIT’s Stratton Student Center yesterday afternoon to protest Israel’s continued military attacks against Lebanon.

The event, organized by MIT neuroscience professor Nancy Kanwisher, was sponsored by an ad-hoc group of faculty members and student leaders from MIT’s Arab Students Organization, Lebanese Club, and Muslim Students Association.

Kanwisher, who said afterwards that she had hoped 100 people would attend the event, told the crowd that while the protestors should not condone violence against Israeli citizens, she said that Israel is killing a disproportionate number of Lebanese civilians.

In addition to criticizing what she called Israel’s human rights violations and theft of Palestinian land, she said that the United States must stop contributing weapons to Israel.

Vienna-based Muslims stage protest rally against Israel
Vienna, July 29, IRNA

Austria-Lebanon-Rally
Hundreds of Vienna-based Muslims staged an anti-Israel rally in the Austrian capital on Friday afternoon condemning Tel Aviv's carnage in Lebanon.

Large groups of Arab, Turkish, Iranian, Bosnian and Austrian Muslims attended the gathering outside the palace of the Austrian chancellor chanting anti-Israeli slogans.

The protestors issued a statement at the end of the rally saying the defenseless people of Lebanon were faced with threats of homelessness, poverty and starvation due to the incessant attacks of the Israeli forces since July 12 against civilian targets and infrastructure of Lebanon.

Condemning killing of the United Nations' observers in southern Lebanon as a result of the Israeli bombardments, the statement said "Even the Europeans who interpret Israel's savage attacks on Lebanon and Palestine as an act of self-defense and support Tel Aviv with their silence are not safe" from its atrocities.

About 40 people gathered in downtown Austin Thursday to protest conflicts in the Middle East.

A group of local musicians organized the demonstration. They call themselves Instruments for Peace.

One member says it was originally a protest against civilian casualties of the war in Iraq but the recent fighting between Lebanon and Israel was also on their minds.

"And we disagree with what Hezbollah is bombing, civilians, as well. We support all civilians equally," Richard Bowden of Instruments for Peace said.

46. Pro-Lebanon supporters attack Howard's car after speech
CANBERRA, Australia Pro-Lebanon supporters mobbed the Australian prime minister's car in the western city of Perth. They threw things at the car and scuffled with police as John Howard's entourage sped away.
Howard had just finished speaking at a party conference, where he said Hezbollah is -- quote -- "not some kind of inspirational liberation organization; it's a terrorist organization."

He says there will be no lasting peace in the Middle East until both sides accept the right of both Israel and the Palestinians to be independent states.

A leader of the Australian protest says Hezbollah are "freedom fighters" who are protecting Lebanon.

Anti-Israel protest in Australia turns nasty
Sydney: Prime Minister John Howard was mobbed and the police clashed with Hezbollah supporters and anti-Israel protesters in the west coast Australian city of Perth Saturday.

Demonstrators damaged Howard's car as he left a meeting. Around 200 people waving Lebanese and Palestinian flags and shouting "We want peace" punched, kicked and threw projectiles at the vehicle as the police struggled to keep order.

Police wrestled with protesters to the ground and there was at least one arrest.

Protest organiser Muhammad el-Khatib said he had family in Lebanon and that the Australian government should try and broker a ceasefire.

Some 2000 members of Turkish political parties and NGOs holding torches marched from Taksim to Dolmabahce in Istanbul on Friday evening to protest against Israel and its targeting of civilians in Lebanon.

Waving placards, the protestors chanted slogans such as, "USA get out of Middle East", ''Yankee go home'', ''We are with the Palestinians" and ''We are with Lebanon."

The Confederation of Revolutionary Workers' Trade Unions of Turkey (DISK) Chairman Suleyman Celebi condemned Israel and its ally the USA, accusing them of committing atrocities in the Middle East.

"We are here to say 'No' to war. We will raise our voice against oppression," Mr Celebi declared.

They held flags from their homelands — Lebanon and Palestine — and carried posters with pictures of bloody, dead young children.

"We want a cease fire, we want a cease fire!" and "Stop the killing, stop the war!" was the chant Friday in front of the Federal Building on Durango Street.

The group of mostly Lebanese Americans and Palestinian Americans chanted Friday at the rally more than two weeks after war began between Israel and Hezbollah guerrillas who control southern Lebanon.

The "Justice for Palestine and Lebanon" rally was aimed at condemning the fighting.

Umno Youth protest

By ROYCE CHEAH

KUALA LUMPUR: Umno Youth deputy chief Khairy Jamaludin and a group of protesters tried to force their way into the Kuala Lumpur Convention Centre yesterday to hand over a memorandum to US Secretary of State Condoleezza Rice.

They were, however, prevented from doing so by members of the Federal Reserve Unit (FRU).

But Khairy was later allowed into the centre where he presented the memorandum to a US representative.

He told reporters inside the centre that the memorandum expressed the feelings of the Malaysian people.
