Oil from bombed plant covers Lebanon shore

Oil from bombed plant covers Lebanon shore

By SCHEHEREZADE FARAMARZI, Associated Press Writer

BEIRUT, Lebanon - A black coat of oil now covers the Lebanese capital's once-beautiful sandy Mediterranean shore, spilled from a power plant that was knocked down by Israeli warplanes two weeks ago.

Fishermen say hundreds of oil-coated fish have been washed ashore in what is the country's worst ever environmental disaster.

About 80 miles of Lebanon's shores had been affected by a spill of more than 110,000 barrels of oil from the Jiyeh plant, about 12 miles south of Beirut, the city's mayor, Abdel Monem Ariss, said Friday. The plant was in flames after it was hit in Israeli air raids, cutting electricity to many areas in the capital and south Lebanon.

"Depending on how the wind is blowing, I think many shores will be soiled with this oil spill," Ariss told The Associated Press.

omelet without breaking eggs, we're building democracy in the Middle East,
Israel has a legitimate right to defend herself, Lebanon's fragile democracy must be preserved, the Arabs deserve this because they don't recognize Israel's right to exist, it's better to fight the terrorist over there than here, someone's got to put a stop to terrorism, it's part of the clash of civilizations, it's either them or us, suppose they had a nuclear weapon, it's really Iran that's behind this, if the Israelis didn't do this there would be a Shiite crescent in the Middle East, we're really helping Lebanon by removing a terrorist faction from their government, and this will prevent terrorists from firing rockets at Israel, Syria's to blame of course, those Palestinians are to be faulted for not accepting Israel's generous peace proposals, it's because the terrorists hate peace and democracy, Hezbollah must be confronted once and for all, it's a chance for a broader change in the region, any change in the Middle East is better than the status quo, if we didn't do it now, we'd have to do it all over again in six months, blah blah blah blah blah.
