Several people shot at Jewish Federation in Seattle

SEATTLE – At least three people have been shot at the Jewish Federation at 2031 Third Ave. in downtown Seattle. One person has been taken into custody.

Police have taken one person into custody but there may be more suspects in or around the building. Police have their weapons pointed toward the second floor of the building.

The three victims are believed to be women. One was reportedly shot in the abdomen and another was shot in the arm. They are being taken to Harborview Medical Center.

The incident began around 4 p.m. Part of Third Avenue and Second Avenue near Lenora have been closed to traffic. Police are urging people to stay away from the area.

SEATTLE - At least three people were wounded by gunshots Friday afternoon at the Jewish Federation of Greater Seattle and one person was arrested, police said.

A SWAT team was searching the building, looking for any other victims, anyone hiding or any other possible shooters, police spokesman Rich Pruitt said.

The extent of the victims' injuries was not immediately known, but reportedly at least two were shot in the stomach, and they were being taken to Harborview Medical Center. A witness told KOMO 4 News that she heard at least four gunshots and saw four victims.

Police blocked off several city blocks to investigate.

68. My DH and I spent a summer up in Northeastern Washington.

We were working in one of the campgrounds there. Farrow was one of the locals there at the time and we sort of new him by sight. Since guns are all over the place up there with the hunting culture, we didn't take much notice of the locals except one of my fellow workers who pretty much filled us in on what was going on.

I was really shocked when the Los Angeles shooting happened and even more shocked to find out that he was a member of the Aryan Nation.

64. We Need More Police Security Every High Holiday

In the 90's we had a big rise in vandalism of synagogues around the Chicago area. Many who were caught were punk skinheads, but it started the need to beef up security. That accelerated in the late 90s when several Orthodox Jews in the area were attacked on their way to a local synagogue and was followed up by more vandalism. Things got even worse in 2000 when a disciple of Matthew Hale...a fundie racist shot up the West Rogers Park neighborhood...that is predominately Jewish and then killed the former black head coach of Northwestern University as he played with his kids in his driveway. Security has gotten tighter and tighter ever since.

A good portion of our budget for our synagogue now is strictly for security...be it a "high tech" 24/7 camera system to having actual guards posted in and around our houses of worship...and this is in a "conservative" town. No, it's not Arab extremists who make the threats, it's nice white xtian boys who still think the Jews killed Jesus and we control all the money.

My synagogue has been threatened continuously...the religious school which meets on Wednesday has been policed closely for years. The pre-school has enormous security devices and protocols because there are reasons.

the kids should not be on their own...that's our responsiblity.

I'd prefer that there be no security guards at our synagogue and the concept where people can worship peacefully without having to fear either physical or mental intimidation...that's what I'm refering to. It'd be nice to return to the days when we didn't have to spend several thousand dollars a year for a PRIVATE security company to watch the property or have to ask the local police for protection, DURING THE DAY, so people can worship freely. I'm not a religious person by any means, but I do respect the rights of those who feel they need to worship...as long as their faith remains private and not part of my life or the body politic.

Our society has been fed on tons of violence...all problems are solved with a gun, all disputes settled with destroying the other. We have a culture where hatred is encouraged and all but celebrated. I see plenty of it right here on DU.
