On Saturday, July 29 at 2:30 pm and at 11:00 pm
--------------------------------------------------------------------------------

Oath Betrayed: Torture, Medical Complicity, and the War on Terror
Dr. Steven Miles

In a discussion of his book, "Oath Betrayed," Dr. Steven Miles speaks about abuses of prisoners in prison camps located in Abu Ghraib, Guatanamo, Afghanistan, Uzbekistan and Iraq. According to Dr. Miles, these abuses include beatings, thermal and chemical burns, asphyxiation, and sexual humiliation of POWs. Drawing on documents gathered from Freedom of Information requests, Dr. Miles says that clinicians did not report abuses and falsified documents that would have shown evidence of POW mistreatment. Dr. Miles argues for more investigations into interrogation practices and suggests that prison clinicians should be held accountable to Geneva Convention requirements that POWs be treated humanely. This event was hosted by the University of Illinois College of Medicine in Chicago, Illinois.

Steven Miles is a professor at the University of Minnesota Medical School and also practices medicine. He has worked with the research committee of the Center for Victims of Torture, served as the chief medical officer for a Cambodian refugee camp, advocated AIDS prevention in Sudan, and worked on tsunami relief in Indonesia. --------------------------------------------------------------------------------

Conservatives without Conscience
John Dean

Former White House counsel John Dean, who was a major player in the Watergate scandal that brought down his former boss, then-President Richard Nixon, talks about his book "Conservatives Without Conscience." John Dean argues that conservative politics in the U.S. have moved perilously close to authoritarianism. Mr. Dean further distances himself from his Republican roots with criticisms of the current GOP leadership, claiming it has sullied the principles of conservatism with radical right-wing policies and Machiavellian tactics. This event was held at Olsson's Books and Records in Washington DC.

John Dean was White House Counsel to President Richard Nixon from July 1970 until April 1973. As White House Counsel, he became involved in events leading up to the Watergate first break-in and the subsequent Watergate scandal. Later, he went on to become the star witness of the Watergate prosecution. He has also served as chief minority counsel for the House Judiciary Committee and an associate deputy attorney general for the U.S. Department of Justice. He has authored "Blind Ambition," "Lost Honor," "The Rehnquist Choice: The Untold Story of the Nixon Appointment that Redefined the Supreme Court," "Unmasking Deep Throat," and "Worse than Watergate: The Secret Presidency of George W. Benedict Arnold's Navy: The Ragtag Fleet that Lost the Battle of Lake Champlain but Won the American Revolution
James Nelson

In "Benedict Arnold's Navy," James Nelson strives to characterize Benedict Arnold as more than a traitor. Mr. Nelson traces Arnold's role in the Army during the American Revolution, including Arnold's role in the battles at Ticonderoga and Valcour Island on Lake Champlain. Nelson chronicles the wit with which Benedict conducted his military endeavors and argues that his entire reputation is marred by Arnold's ultimate abandonment of the American army and alliance with the British.

James Nelson is a former sailor and served as an officer on a number of sailing vessels. His writing covers a wide range of America's maritime heritage, from piracy in Colonial Virginia to the naval action of the Civil War. He has authored "By Force of Arms," "The Maddest Idea,"" The Continental Risque,"" Lords of the Ocean," and "All the Brave Fellows" -- the five books of his Revolution at Sea Saga -- as well as "The Guardship: Book One of the Brethren of the Coast."

The Broken Branch: How Congress is Failing America and How to Get It Back on Track
Norman Ornstein and Thomas Mann

In their new book, "The Broken Branch, " Norman Ornstein and Thomas Mann describe Congress as a dysfunctional, weakened, and deeply divided institution. The authors acknowledge that Congress was designed to be "rough and tumble," but they say there has been a fundamental breakdown in the deliberative process and a collapse of congressional oversight over the executive branch. They also bemoan the increased importance of party affiliation, saying that Congress is more partisan today than at any time since the late 19th century. In this event at the American Enterprise Institute in Washington, DC, Mr. Ornstein and Mr. Mann are joined by two former Speakers of the House -- Republican Newt Gingrich and Democrat Thomas Foley, who share insights from their personal experience.

Norman Ornstein is a Resident Scholar at the American Enterprise Institute for Public Policy Research. He writes a weekly column on Congress for Roll Call and is an election analyst for CBS News. Thomas Mann is the W. Averell Harriman Chair and Senior Fellow in Governance Studies at the Brookings Institution. The Secret Way to War: The Downing Street Memo and the Iraq War's Buried History
Mark Danner

In "The Secret Way to War" author Mark Danner argues that President Bush decided to invade Iraq much earlier than he has admitted. The author calls on a transcription of the secret minutes of a July 2002 meeting of senior British foreign policy and security officials, referred to as the Downing street memo, to prove that the Bush administration only agreed to weapons inspections in the expectation that the Iraqis would refuse to cooperate. This event was hosted by the Mechanics Institute Library in San Francisco.

Mark Danner is the author of "The Massacre at El Mozote: A Parable of the Cold War," "The Road to Illegitimacy: One Reporter's Travels Through the 2000 Florida Recount" and "Torture and Truth: America, Abu Ghraib, and the War on Terror."

Sandstorm: Policy Failure in the Middle East
Leon Hadar with James Pinkerton and Geoffrey Kemp

Leon Hadar talks about his book, "Sandstorm," at the Cato Institute in Washington, DC. In the book, Mr. Hadar argues that the U.S. should pursue "constructive disengagement" from the Middle East, where the costs of our involvement over the decades have outweighed the benefits. He says that Europe, Japan, and South Korea should pick-up the costs and responsibility of policing the region, since they are far more dependent on Middle East oil than the United States. James Pinkerton (Newsday, Fox News) and Geoffrey Kemp (Nixon Center) provide commentary. During the Q&A portion of the event, the panelists talk about the current conflict between Israel and Lebanon.

Leon Hadar is a research fellow at the Cato Institute. He is a former U.N. bureau chief for the Jerusalem Post and current Washington correspondent for the Singapore Business Times. Mr. Hadar is also the author of "Quagmire: America in the Middle East."

Someone may have a laptop I could use. We really should PM some of those bums in ER to help us out when needed.
