Thread to show solidarity with our Jewish friends and neighbors
Edited on Fri Jul-28-06 10:28 PM by JackNewtown
In the wake of the tragic attack (which I consider a terrorist attack, like all hate crimes IMO) in Seattle, which has already resulted in the murder of one innocent individual, I believe all of America must stand up and show solidarity with our our Jewish friends and neighbors. This is just a message board and this is largely a symbolic thread but I hope this gesture will be repeated a million times across this nation. Those bigots who would like to do harm to fellow Americans must be sent a strong, unmistakable message from all sane Americans that we will not tolerate such individuals and such attacks. We all must do our part in the fight against hatred. Today we are all Jewish Americans!

16. It means "Sabbath."

On edit: another version you may see is "Shabbos." It depends on the speaker.

Self delete. Probably not the thread for a Big Lebowski joke. Even though we could all use a laugh right about now. Shalom.

34. Sabath... it is the day when all rest...
from work and focus on God... if they are using the term Shabbat, then the people in question are orthodox and do not use the phone, drive a car, or any other electric device... they cannot even carry anything on them... it is all very complex. just fyi and I used to be orthodox:)

8. You don't have to say "Jewish Americans." You can say Jews.
It's not illegal or immoral to do so. ;-)

For an example, take this test (use nouns or adjectives):

1. Upon moving to New Mexico, I was happy to meet my ________ neighbors.

2. When I lived in St. Louis, a ________ named Harvey Kopman owned the best deli in the city.

3. Kosher food is very tasty; it is no wonder that the ancient culture of the ______ is to be credited for it.

4. A _______ rabbi taught a course in the Old Testament at the university.

5. My ________ friend became one of the best painters in the United States.

6. Millions of ________ were slaughtered during the Holocaust.

7. I am in love with a man whose father is a ________ .

12. The reason I include the "American" part
I think there are too many people who view certain groups in America as not being "real Americans", and Jews are unfortunately one of these groups. I almost always add "American" to groups or call them "US (insert group name here)", with a special emphasis on minority groups who are not considered "real Americans" by many people, to subtly point out that "they" too are Americans. They too live in our neighborhoods; they also go to baseball games; they too watch the Super Bowl; they also like pizza; they also pay taxes, etc. In short, "they" are "us" and "we" are "them." :) If more people realized how interconnected we all are, not just domestically, but globally, the level of hate would drop dramatically.

I wouldn't, though, call it an act of terrorism, but rather a hate-crime.

May we bring peace, tolerence, solidarity, and understanding to our communities. :grouphug:

13. I believe all hate crimes are terrorist acts
They are intended to strike fear in the hearts of a particular group, just like "typical" terrorist acts.

19. I regret to witness such hateful things, anywhere.
All human beings deserve to be treated with respect and dignity. Violence has no place in this world but we have a long road to travel to extinguish the hatred and anger backing such violence.

My spirit is with all victims of unnecessary violence and destruction.

22. To get practical--
--if there are any groups in your area organizing night watches for synagogues, help them out if you can. In Seattle we did this for mosques after 9-11; similary logic applies now.

31. Thanks for posting this thread. My prayers go out to all innocent
victims in this conflict. What happened in Seattle was wrong. We must work for peace now to cool such acts of rage and not throw gasoline on the fire like * has done.
May the wounded have a speedy recovery and may the maddness cease.

Well, I am an ethnic and cultural half-Jew (these things can get a little complicated), so showing solidarity is a little redundant for me, but I think it's a good thread in any case.

I stand with all being unjustly killed on all sides.

I also stand with all innocent Jews and all innocent Arabs everywhere. I stand with all innocents being wrongfully harmed, from Lebanon to Seattle to the far reaches of the globe.
