WICHITA, Kan. -- Two Kansas children are in protective custody after authorities found 68 pit bulls living in their home.

Police said the children -- an 11-year-old boy and a 5-year-old girl -- were found living in deplorable conditions.

The dogs were living inside and in the back yard. Many of the dogs have scars and were probably used for fighting, authorities said.

The children's father was arrested on various charges, including resisting arrest and child endangerment.

1. I hope he is brought up on charges of animal cruelty as well.
I can't see any reason why 68 dogs should be living in one house, especially not in a house as small as the one in that video, as living in those crowded conditions could not have been healthy for them. And forcing animals to fight for human entertainment is absolutely deplorable.

I'm glad those children and the dogs are out of that house, and I hope that an animal rescue agency takes the dogs so they don't have to return.

2. Too bad for the dogs, they really weren't what made the problem.
Now since you can't adopt them out, and few shelters can take 68 of any diposed dogs, most of them will get to die.

3. At least the children are in protective custody...
Most of the dogs will be euthanized if they have scars, at least in a lot of places in the US. Because they've already been used for fighing, they won't make good house pets. Some cities even ban pit bulls entirely, so I'm guessing they'd all be put down in that case.

It must have been quite a mess in there! I hope they never get the kids back!

4. I beleive in dog heaven.
It's certainly a better place than they've ever seen, as they've surely lived in hell. Where's Mom, anyway?

5. The pitball debate is such a heated one
I love dogs so I pretty much stay out of it. Here in St Louis there are townships that have banned the breed. There was this strangecase about a year ago of a man who owned 2 or 3 pitbulls. He had owned them for several years and by all accounts he was a loving owner who cared very well for them. The man was stricten with cancer, had surgery and chemo and was greatly debilitated. In his weakened state the dogs mauled and killed him after 7 plus years of being loyal, loving companions. I had a friend who had a pitbull and it was just the sweetest dog. I honestly don't know what the answer is but I know I wouldn't have one in my house. No way not worth the risk.

6. Sounds like a show arrest
Isn't it odd that the day after one lady is killed by a pit bull, the authorities suddenly discover someone else is keeping 68 fighting dogs? Sounds like the organizers couldn't come up with more money for the pay-off this week-end. It's amazing that people can somehow organize dog fights without the authorities finding out.
