US Sen John McCain's Son to Join Marines: Report
Edited on Sat Jul-29-06 02:55 PM by cal04
The youngest son of U.S. Senator John McCain, a former prisoner of war in Vietnam and a vocal proponent of more American troops in Iraq, will soon report for duty in the Marine Corps, Time Magazine reported on Saturday.

Jimmy McCain, 18, will spend three months in boot camp in California this autumn and another month in specialized training.

Depending on his unit, the younger McCain could eventually wind up in Iraq where Marines have experienced heavy fighting, Time reported. Marines are also in combat in Afghanistan.

``I'm obviously very proud of my son,'' McCain told Time, ''but also understandably a little nervous.''

1. Well, I hope the best for him
And that he comes back home safe and sound one day.

That's at least one scion of repug leadership that won't be classified as a chickenhawk.

3. "Nervous"?
McCain's son will not be put in harms way.

If you don't believe that the younger McCain's enlistment isn't a component of McCain's presidential bid, I've got some swampland in Flordia to sell you.

9. Yep.
"another month of specialized training"
We can only guess what this type of training would be.

17. A lot of the troops are going for specialized training
designed for the theater they'll be deployed to. In this I have to give our military props. They are trying to make sure our people are well prepared even if the CIC and SOD don't give a shit.

23. Its called MOS training
its standard -- every Marine infantryman goes through it.

The USMC has much longer basic/MOS training than the other services.

put in dangerous situations.

24. In that situation, he probably requested it...
there were a number of fortunate sons that actually requested combat duty. Going against daddy's orders or actually show a measure of guts.

Either way, I don't wish harm to anyone ones son, daughter, father, mother, aunt or uncle serving over there. I just want them home.

and given the current situation over there, either he's just as insane as his dad or he has just bought into the neo-con bullshit. since he's only 18, I vote for: bought the bullshit. He will learn soon enough, but alas it will be too late by then. I wonder how he will vote in later years? ;)

6. One thing I will say about McCain..
He served. He gave 5 years of his life in a POW camp. He is not a coward. Why he sucks up to bush, who knows? That is very disappointing. I do not wish any bad things on his son.

13. Fast Forward to 2028.
"Representatives of the George P. Bush Presidential primary campaign today denied any influence over the group calling itself 'Swift APCers for Truth.' That group charges that the medals received by James McCain were given for political reasons to groom him for the presidency.

McCain, a triple-amputee who received the Congressional Medal of Honor for saving his entire plattoon in Baghdad, called the charges 'disgraceful.' Said McCain, 'It's clear that Karl still has the touch, even in his seventies.'

14. Jack McCain too.
From the article...McCain's other son, Jack, attends the U.S. Naval Academy.

Two McCain sons in the military. That's more than I can say for any other Senator. The McCain boys should serve as role model for the bushbot twins.

16. Yeah,honorable,but....
I believe a senator gets to nominate 2 a year to the service academies....how like Dick Cheney to check a list and find himself or family most fit to serve in a desirable "berth"...that said-the past two generations went there and served well....

19. Do you have any evidence that McCain recommended his son?
Evidence would be something like say a news account saying he did, or offical papers saying he did, stuff like that.

21. Okay....
my understanding is that to enter a service academy, you must be recommended by a congresscritter....that would be McCain himself or another from his state delegation...so it could have been a proxy...what are the chances of three generations being the most deserving candidate in the state IF THE FATHER IS IN A SEAT OF POWER????

22. McCain, the father, probably didn't get a Congressional appointment
about 100 slots are given to active military people and as the son of a Medal of Honor winner he would be exempt. McCain the younger though evidently did.

20. Huh?
Edited on Sat Jul-29-06 04:42 PM by No Surrender
The big dick checked a list somewhere and found a desirable place to serve? Sorry, ya lost me.

I have no idea what McCain's sons will do once they are done with training, and until I find out that they are in a cushy spot out of harms way, I'm keeping my mouth shut. I've yet to see anyone related to the chimp sign up for duty, regardless of whether it's a cushy spot.

Don't get me wrong though, I can't stand McCain, but I am impressed that his two sons signed up for duty in the chimp's military.

edited for clarity.

15. I applaud McCain's son
Despite the fact that his dad will use it for political gain. At least he has balls enough to serve like his father did. When a Bush child enlists that's when I'll have a heart attack.
