Karl Rove v. Thomas Jefferson

Karl Rove on the "corrosive role" of administration critics in the press, July 29, 2006:

"It's odd to me that most of these critics are journalists and columnists," he said. "Perhaps they don't like sharing the field of play. Perhaps they want to draw attention away from the corrosive role their coverage has played focusing attention on process and not substance."

Thomas Jefferson on the role of the press:

"The only security of all is in a free press. The force of public opinion cannot be resisted when permitted freely to be expressed. The agitation it produces must be submitted to. It is necessary, to keep the waters pure." --Thomas Jefferson to Lafayette, 1823.

"I am... for freedom of the press, and against all violations of the Constitution to silence by force and not by reason the complaints or criticisms, just or unjust, of our citizens against the conduct of their agents." --Thomas Jefferson to Elbridge Gerry, 1799.

"No experiment can be more interesting than that we are now trying, and which we trust will end in establishing the fact, that man may be governed by reason and truth. Our first object should therefore be, to leave open to him all the avenues to truth. The most effectual hitherto found, is the freedom of the press. It is, therefore, the first shut up by those who fear the investigation of their actions." --Thomas Jefferson to John Tyler, 1804.

Jeff Gannon ring any bells?
Armstrong Williams?
Creative Response Concepts?
Fox news?
The little 11/3/04 meting where you told members of the
media that any mention of a stolen election would result
in them being frozen out of the loop?
Your talk w/ Bob Novak on V. Plame?

Karl, no way to stop the truth from coming out. Your boy has fucked
up everything he touched and to such an extent that it can not be hidden.

"It's odd to me that most of these critics are journalists and columnists," he said. "Perhaps they don't like sharing the field of play. Perhaps they want to draw attention away from the corrosive role their coverage has played focusing attention on process and not substance."

5. If I am not mistaken, even Hegel, who found the state was "God,"
and argued that without freedom of the press and speech, then any kinks in the state's armor would not be exposed and correction impossible, therefore, it was essential for the freedom of both to be maintained.

One must have a base upon which to build upon abstract thought in order to function in a real world. Having a wide range of information readily available is essential in order for the formulation of ideas of acceptance, refusal or modification...

Fukuyana proposed the "end of history" due to the triumph of liberal democracy, with history per se ending and a series of mere chronicles being its replacement. That is, new scientific advances, great storms and lists of rulers, births and deaths enrolled, etc. taking the place of history. Of course, Marx and Fukuyama both missed the mark on the powers of metaphysical phenomena such as religion and nationalism, as we see by the present day's chronicles. They are not chronicles, though, are they? They are the building blocks which will shortly be synthesized and analyzed into history.

A non-free press in effect, is an attempt to stop history, or at least to turn it into "historical fiction." This is a belief that the state is God, that it is at work for forces of good and that individuals are not important except for going along with or refusing the same. Punishment results in the latter and continued existence for the former. Any change to official policy is heresy, and must likewise be punished.

In short, a restriction on the press and people's speech is one of the worst intellectual crimes a government can commit.

6. As an old-timey Fascist
A free press would hold no interest for KKKarl. No, media manipulation, otoh, is very attractive.

:puke:

I'll take Jefferson, thanks.
