Rumors Circulating Of Impending COUP In Iraq Against PM Maliki
Rumors of coup in Iraq prompt Shiite warnings
By Joshua Partlow and Saad Sarhan

Washington Post

BAGHDAD, Iraq — A Shiite Muslim political leader said Friday that rumors were circulating of an impending coup attempt against the government of Iraqi Prime Minister Nouri al-Maliki and warned that "we will not allow it."

Hadi al-Amiri, a member of parliament from Iraq's most powerful political party, said in a speech in the holy city of Najaf that "some tongues" were talking about toppling al-Maliki's Shiite-led government and replacing it with a "national salvation government, which we call a military coup government." He did not detail the allegation.

A new government would mean "canceling the constitution, canceling the results of the elections and going back to square one ... and we will not accept that," he said. Al-Amiri is also a top official in the Badr Brigade, the armed wing of the Supreme Council for the Islamic Revolution in Iraq, which is the leading member of a coalition of Shiite political parties governing Iraq.

Meanwhile, the U.S. military announced that four Marines were killed Thursday in unspecified "enemy action" in the western province of Anbar. The names of the four Marines — three assigned to the Army's 1st Brigade, 1st Armored Division, and one from Regimental Combat Team 5 — were being withheld pending notification of next of kin.

4. Oh , for God's sake.
These people are still under the delusion that they can install a pro U.S., pro Israel state in Iraq. When all this is said and done, we will be lucky if they want to have diplomatic relations with us. And how much are we spending on that big embassy complex?

6. Amen RDANGELO, HOW much indeed....
As IF, the people in Iraq are going to bow down
to an US, UK, Israeli led hegemonic take over of
their country. Meanwhile, American is going down the drain.
The situation is, without a doubt rivaled only by Hitler's
mad attempt to rule the world.

Watching poor Nora try to explain why a coup is a good thing. "The birth pangs of a fledgling Democracy" maybe?

13. The US would be behind the coup. Maleki was too honest when
he was in Washington.
Chalabi just went to the latest Bilderberg meeting. Maybe they will dust him off again.

14. Was Malaki too honest, or was someone pulling his (puppet)
strings? I'd like to know who really wrote his speech, because I'm so confused!

And are we sending more troops to Baghdad because Malaki thinks it's a necessity, w/o
a discussion in the U.S. about it?

Edited on Sat Jul-29-06 09:37 PM by NNN0LHI
I honestly do not believe this fellow ever says a single word that he is not told to say by his bosses. One of them just plain screwed up is what I think happened.

Lets face it Bush has not been known to hire the sharpest tools in the shed.

I wonder what Brownie is doing these days? I hope he is not advising Maliki.

12. How does the Iraqi military pull off a coup in the Green Zone which...
...is guarded inside and out exclusively by the US military and mercenaries?

No Iraqi soldiers would ever under any circumstances be allowed to get near Bush's Iraq puppet Maliki. He is too valuable.

You can be assured the only people who have ever guarded Maliki are US military and mercenaries.

This story does not ring true.

15. I could well be that we have to consider "the unthinkable"
Like US helicopters evacuating the last few Americans from (Saigon) Baghdad rooftops. (Yes, really.)

Or did you imagine that these non-reality-based fools could not screw it up that badly?

27. Easy. Cut off the Green Zone from the rest of Baghdad.
Edited on Sun Jul-30-06 03:51 AM by Selatius
Baghdad is a very large city, and the Green Zone is only one district of the city. You could still run most of the city and the rest of the country if you simply pretended the Green Zone didn't exist. Just co-opt existing office space for new ministries and facilities that aren't under US control.

Because US forces would have to face the Mahdi Army as well as the Badr Brigades on the Shi'ite side and several more Sunni militias on the other if it tried to leave the Green Zone and extend control over the entirety of Baghdad, they would likely not take over all of Baghdad without absorbing heavy losses.

22. I'm no expert, but
my dad was in the Army, stationed in Germany in the early 70s and his duties included maintaining and operating a Pershing missle battery. On numerous occasions he noted that while it was the Army who operated the missle and related systems, it was the Marines doing the guarding. I suspect that this same principle may be at work here.

21. I really can't tell...
I really can't tell if this is another WH pr move, or something that is driven by the Iraqis.

For the last six months or so all we heard was how great everything would be once the "unity government" took control. We kept hearing, "just wait, all of this blood and treasure will be worth it." So now that the imagery of a unity government has litterally been blown all to hell, is the "national salvation government" just the next WH stupid new catch pharse aimed to appease the soon to be voting US sheeple?

Geez. I wasn't sure when I began this post, but "national salvation" sure seems like a phrase that rove or Hughes would use to sell an idea to wingnuts. Unbelievable.
