There is Something Fundamentally Wrong (Give Peace a Chance)
Edited on Sat Jul-29-06 07:26 PM by oberliner
I've been staring at this quote now for about twenty minutes and I humbly ask for a momentary cessation of hostilities so that we may come together in agrement with this single statement from UN humanitarian chief Jan Egeland:

"There is something fundamentally wrong with a war where there are more dead children than armed men."

I do not wish for this to be a thread of throwing out accusations or blame.

I do not with for this to be a thread for justifications or excuses for the conduct of either side.

I do not wish for this to be a thread with arguments about antisemitism or unfair accusations of same.

I do not with for this to be a thread arguing about the history of the conflicts in the Middle East.

I do not with for this to be a thread about which group has made more hateful comments about the other.

I want above all else for us to be able to come together as progressives and declare those words along with Jan Egeland.

There is something fundamentally wrong with a war where there are more dead children than armed men.

And perhaps add this plea from John Lennon:

Give Peace a Chance.

8. K&R There is something wrong.
But I like what Jesus said
"Because inequities abound, the love of many will wax cold"
Could it be that the gross inequities of todays world has terned many hearts as cold as ice?

14. Absolutely.
Sometimes it seems the safest place to be in wartime is in the army. And that's an obscenity.

16. Peace must be something we can be together in.
We lose our power when we quibble among ourselves, it is entertaining to take potshots at each other and I am guilty(er) than anyone, but we have three short months left to accomplish our serious work before the midterms. We have to raise our voices and make our feelings known to our Government about their many shortcomings in so many facets of their job performance.

17. With love to my daughter,--the future of this earth, I give you
her favorite John Lennnon:

Imagine
John Lennon
Imagine there's no heaven
It's easy if you try
No hell below us
Above us only sky
Imagine all the people
Living for today...

Imagine there's no countries
It isn't hard to do
Nothing to kill or die for
And no religion too
Imagine all the people
Living life in peace...

You may say I'm a dreamer
But I'm not the only one
I hope someday you'll join us
And the world will be as one

Imagine no possessions
I wonder if you can
No need for greed or hunger
A brotherhood of man
Imagine all the people
Sharing all the world...

You may say I'm a dreamer
But I'm not the only one
I hope someday you'll join us
And the world will live as one

19. What's So Fun About Peace, Love & Understanding?
Nick Lowe

As I walk through
This wicked world
Searchin' for light in the darkness of insanity.

I ask myself
Is all hope lost?
Is there only pain and hatred, and misery?

And each time I feel like this inside,
There's one thing I wanna know:
What's so funny 'bout peace love & understanding?

And as I walked on
Through troubled times
My spirit gets so downhearted sometimes
So where are the strong
And who are the trusted?
And where is the harmony?
Sweet harmony.

21. There is something fundamentally wrong...
...when a nation calls itself "the greatest in the history of the world" and then has to spend more on military hardware than the next 20 nations in the world combined.

There is something fundamentally wrong when that nation is willing to spend all that money on toys for "the brass" but can't find their outrage when the "grunts" aren't given adequate weapons and armor.

There is something fundamentally wrong when that nation hides those soldiers when they return from war in a box, or in a wheelchair, or on a stretcher.

There is something fundamentally wrong when our ally is cheered for it's efforts to "reduce civilian casualties" by forcing 20% of the population of "the newest democracy in the middle east" from their homes, because we don't like who they chose as leaders...and then bombs the hell out of anyone who remained behind because "they must be terrorists."

There is something fundamentally wrong when any nation views war as anything other than a last resort.

And no small part of what is fundamentally wrong is that religious fundamentalism, with it's certainty of being absolutely, undisputably, irrevocably correct because it's God is bigger than their enemy's God, has siezed control of our government. And "theirs".

28. A study showed
just a few years ago that 90% of war casualties are civilians and that 80% of those are women and children.

Humanitarian groups allege that this is deliberate. The murder of women and children strikes at the heart of a culture and eradicates the things held most dear. Armies of men can be demoralized and defeated when they see their families destroyed.

It is a lie when war-makers say that they do not target women and children. They do.

29. The one step people seem unwilling to make is allowing innocents to die...
for peace.

It's amazing how many innocents we will allow to die for war.

But can you imagine a world in which a country says, go ahead, attack. We will not fight back. Kill us. We will not make war.

No. That only ever happens in movies.

It's sad and horrific. But we would have to sacrifice innocent lives to truly give peace a chance...

how many are willing to risk that?

31. Lets make it real simple
If the Israel laid down its weapons, we would have another Holocuast.

If the terrorists laid down their weapons, we would in fact have peace in the middle east.

It's really quite simple.
