Perfect Storm Brews for PC Buyers
Edited on Sun Jul-30-06 08:38 AM by newyawker99
Dan Nystedt, IDG News Service

Users should soon see the best bargains in years for a new desktop thanks to falling prices on the two most expensive components in a PC.

A battle between the world's two biggest processor makers and oversupply in the LCD panel industry have sent prices tumbling. Users should see the mark downs showing up in stores any time.

"Over the next few months buyers can expect to continue to see PC bargains as the industry clears stock of older inventory," said Charles Smulders, managing vice president of Gartner's client computing group. He said the fourth quarter might also offer good buying opportunities as PC makers try to keep up sales prior to the launch of Windows Vista early next year.

Longer term, price declines and performance improvements will return to a more normal rate, meaning users should take advantage of the current window of opportunity.

AMD, Intel Cut Prices

Intel and Advanced Micro Devices both halved prices on some desktop PC microprocessors this week, part of a price war between the two chip makers.

The cuts included some top-end chips. For example, Intel pared its Intel Pentium D processor, the 960 that runs at 3.6 GHz, to $316, from $530, while AMD reduced the price of its dual-core Athlon 64 X2 5000+ to $301 from $696.

3. AMD is about to experience an Intel perfect storm
The Intel dual core CPU blows the AMD equivalent out of the water. The only counter AMD can make is to cut prices. So if you willing to settle for a Cadillac instead of a BMW you'll be able to get a rocking AMD dual core 64 system cheap.

10. I heard something about Gateway
moving something to the US in Oct. 06, so I've been waiting to see what they do. Do you know if it's their manufacturing or call centers? It would sure be nice to get both and worth extra money not to be tied up on the phone for an hour trying to communicate with 'Tom' when there is a problem. Right now I have a Dell and a Hewlett Packard, neither have US call center, I was on line 1 1/2 hr with HP.
