Police to provide security at Upchurch funeral

The Garden City Police Department and the Kansas Highway Patrol will provide security during the memorial service of Garden City resident and soldier Clint Upchurch, who was killed in Iraq earlier this month.

Both agencies will be on hand to maintain peace and order and to ensure the constitutional rights of all who attend are protected, said Garden City police Capt. Mike Utz.

Members of the Westboro Baptist Church Religious Ministry will be protesting at the service.

Utz said a city ordinance states that protesting cannot take place one hour before, during or two hours after a memorial service. He also said protesters may stand only directly in front of a church, cemetery or funeral home.

Other groups attending the funeral will be members of the Patriot Guard and the National Guard, as well as residents of the community.

Westboro Group's alert on their protest:

Thank God for IEDs (Improvised Explosive Devices)
God Himself Has Now Become America's Terrorist, Killing
Americans in Strange Lands for "Brokeback Mountain *** Sins.
WBC to picket memorial of Army Spc. Clinton R. Upchurch - at 2 p.m., Saturday, Jan. 21, at Word of Life Church, 3004
N. 3' St., Garden City, Kansas. Killed by IED - like the IED America bombed WBC with, in a terroristic move to silence our anti-gay Gospel preaching by violent intimidation.
America bombed our church with an IED made by ***
students at Washburn U. in Topeka. In his retaliatory
wrath, God is killing Americans with Muslim IEDs:

Amazingly sick and sad. This group is a cancer. Traveling all over the country spreading hate and destroying the sanctity of our soldier's deaths and burials.

1. You know what?
I want to know where the police and all the outrage was when they were continuously and callously doing this to the gay community?

I do know that we occasionally had the police protect the counter protesters here but mostly they were used to protect Fred and his merry band of bigots.

Why does it take this to get people really fired up?

Grrrrrrr, makes me mad.

I hate to provide their link because the name of the group is so offensive

BTW, when I clicked on the info for the protests listed it gave me an error message and a blank page. I told it to load anyway and used the text key to lift the hidden passages.

8. Fred Phelps from Topeka
Is a so-called minister whose following is mostly family members. A nominal Democrat, for Chrissakes.

His worshipers go around protesting fallen soldiers funerals because God is mad at the U.S. for not killing all gays.

He makes money from suing anyone that crosses him. His family is full of lawyers.

He is a walking piece of human filth.

4. poor hate filled little fella
You know what we did at Matthew Shepard's funeral, and many others:

It's heartbreaking that the city allows a funeral to BE protested at all - and this guy has a life time history of creating pain and anguish in other people.

Sorry, free speech protests aren't speech when it's outside a private funeral, any more than you can protest a birth. The city management should have qualified his pathetic "protest" speech as condoning the methods of terrorists, and inciting to riot, and kept him out altogether on those grounds.

I'm all for it.

11. For what it's worth, the counter protests are pretty fun social events.
You meet a lot of people who just show up to mock them and photograph them, kind of like going to the zoo, or on a safari. You even get points if you can trap them into doing something stupid on camera.

14. According to the news coverage...
... when they were here, the church only has 75 members. Each insane, of course, but only 75. I've also read that they're a real pain-in-the-keester for residents and officials in Topeka.
