4. However the argument can be made.... |
|
...that we are in a quasi-slavery era with immigrants playing the role of underpaid slaves and with our indentured servitude to the energy masters.

7. Immigrants Chose To Come Here |
|
the slaves did not.
That does not justify their poor treatment, however, it is a big stretch to compare the situation of modern immigrants today to that of slaves in the colonial and antebellum eras.

8. That's why the argument can be made.... |

...but probably not won. And the fear of deportation or worse (Gitmo) probably carries the same palpable fear for the immigrants as those subjected to slavery.

...the Depression when we were teetering toward the brink of Communism. Thank God for a man of virtue (and some vice) like FDR.

6. 6 Years 1 Month - No, I don't think it'll equal the civil war |
|
Just because we are not at arms with ourselves.
You know who will come to the rescue of this country? The most unlikely of men. A slight, quiet fellow. John Conyers.
Come on January '07. I can't wait.
And then the years of trials to follow.

9. NO for a variety of reasons. |
|
In the Civil War, the fighting and killing was on Anmerican soil, and thousands died.
In the Slave era, thousands of blacks were tourtured and died, and most others were horribly treaated and misused, again on American soil.
The Vietnam era had the draft where thousands of young men were forced to either go to 'Nam or flee to Canada! Many STILL suffer the bad effects of being in 'Nam.
Segregation is closely related to the slave era" and had the same associated problems.
We have a different world today, and at least MOST of the old problems are gone. What we have with Shrub is a direct attack on our Democracy! We also have a strong attempt to return our Country to the days of the Class system where you have only 2 classes, the HANES & the HAVE NOTS! THAT'S what I think will be Shrub's legacy! And he's NOT gonna like it!

11. don't forget this era, too: |
|
the depression of 1929 to 1942 or so. Certainly a rotten time in the USA, and most of the World, also. In terms of the standard of living, it is much worse than now. In terms of World leaders, it was also much worse than now. In terms of Presidents FDR was a great and wise/benevolent leader and GWB is continuing his career path of fucking up everything he runs, which, in this case, is the USA, and by association, most of our allies, which should now be called "former allies".

but it will go down in history as the end of the US as a super power. With the national debt rising and our allies dropping away like flies this 8 years will be hard to recover from. We've made a lot of enemies and defending ourselves will bankrupt this country - unless we start using come common sense and engage in diplomacy.
There is nothing wrong with having our enemies fear us. However it would be better in the long run if we didn't keep making more enemies.
