What do you think Rove's political calculation with regard to Israel is?
Edited on Sun Jul-30-06 10:27 AM by Onlooker
The Israel-Hezbollah war is doing a good job of dividing the left and uniting the right. But, for most of us, I think there's enough ambiguity in the conflict that opposing the war is not one of our core demands of a candidate. That might change, especially if Israel continues with what looks like reckless abandon.

If we start turning against candidates who fail to oppose Israel, Rove will be very happy. He likes that this conflict is getting so much press and causing so much debate in our ranks, and there seems to be nothing we can do about it. Israel is proving to be a good ally of the White House.

1. I Think
The right tone here would be for the Left to criticise BushCo for not uniting with EU to call for cease-fire. Don't make it about right/wrong or Israel/Hezbollah, make it about the obligation of the last Superpower on Earth to be a peacemaker.

2. Distraction...Terror
This story sucks the air out of Iraq on the cable noise channels. We're not hearing about how bad things are going there, and so much the better for Karl.

Also all the pictures of rockets and destruction riles up the right wing...not because Lebanon is being attacked, but because Israel is. For the Aramgedon nuts, they're all raptured in this mess as well and Karl sure is gonna whip up their frenzy.

It's now 100 days to go to a crucial election. Rove knows he has to keep majorities in the House & Senate and keep any real investigative power away from Democrats. The game is to distract from the bad with shows like this one.

It also distracts from the fact people are paying over $3 a gallon for gas, the economy is in the shitters and people feel this country is headed in the wrong direction. This is real red meat for "the base" who Rove needs to show up big in November...Repugnicans can't win on their record, so they have to run on the only card they have...and have used effectively for years...hate and fear.

Cheers...

3. I think the answer is to really let these candidates know just how
strongly we feel about wars of aggression. I for one am not going to just be quiet and just pretend that a deliberate massacre is not happening.
We need our voices heard, not silenced.

7. Let it rage...while they pass legislation allowing US citizens
to be detained indefinitely without counsel. We'll never know what hit us, till one by one people start disappearing. That's not tin-foil, it's hidden in the news dump.
