Britain, California to push for greater links in stem cell research

SAN FRANCISCO (AFP) - Britain is looking to forge greater links with California in the biotechnology sector, particularly in the area of stem cell research, Prime Minister
Tony Blair's spokesman said.

The spokesman, speaking on condition of anonymity in line with government policy, said parallels between Britain and California's high-technology industries made the US west coast state a "strategic partner".

Blair is due to give an address on biotechnology to some of the leading Californian companies in the field here on Monday.

The spokesman said: "We are working towards a UK-California conference to be held in the UK in November."

He added that Britain was keen to develop relations with California, whose economy puts it in the world's top 10, and Blair had thought about coming here "for some time".
