ISRAEL MIGHT BE IN FOR A REAL ASS KICKING
1. I support the right for the country to exist
2. Hezballah is no rag tag group of teens throwing rocks
& petro bombs
3. The Lebanese Army now see Israel as the invading enemy
4. The Christians, Palestinians, the Shi, and the Sunni in Lebanon
are now all lining up against Israel
5. The people in Gaza and the West Bank will see this as a chance to get
their pound of flesh
6. Fundamentalists Islamic Clerics will call on their flocks to go to Lebanon
and fight for Allah
7. The United States is tied up in bush's stupid Iraqi war
8. Hezballah wants to draw Israel into a protracted "meat grinder of a war."
9. Both Syria & Iran will support the war against Israel
10. Israeli actions has put the world's opinion against Israel's Lebanon war.

1. There is no military power strong enough to kick their ass.
All the countries in the region don't have near the firepower of Israel. So, Israel won't get dramatically beaten militarily. What they are going to get is another 20 years of grinding guerrilla warfare. They've made enough enemies in Lebanon to keep them busy for a long time.

Israel has lost this war. They lost it from the beginning with war aims that were not achievable: the destruction of Hezbollah and an absolutely peaceful norther border. They've lost it with their brutal and criminal actions.

Israel's strategy, as always, was heavy handed and short-sighted. They'll pay a heavy price for their stupidity.

7. Points # 3 and 4 are the biggies
The Middle East just got a whole lot worse, and what passed for allies in the Arab (yeah, I know, a lot of them are not ethnically Arabs) are now firmly on the other side. I wouldn't want to be the Arab (see above) government that is seen as supporting Israel in this debacle. Notice how fast Egypt and the Saudis are eating their words and trotting out "war crimes?" Bush and his Israeli buddies just flushed 40 years of diplomacy down the toilet, and there's no one to talk to anymore to get it back on track, even if we had the skill and the will, which our punk-in-residence clearly doesn't.

8. Israel can totally flatten everything in that country
and this is still one war they are going to lose. The other costs of this war are the approval of people around the world for their existence and much of their support within the US and UK, their very last allies.

...ass kicking, but setting all moral and legal considerations aside (something Israeli leadership seems to have little trouble doing) Israel has made a grave mistake in pressing this barbaric assault against innocent Lebanese civilians, and it will, in all likelihood, carry with it grave consequences for their security well into the future.
