Mexican leftist urges blockades in capital (pics)
Edited on Sun Jul-30-06 04:14 PM by cal04
Leftist candidate Andres Manuel Lopez Obrador called Sunday for hundreds of thousands of his supporters to erect permanent protest camps to cripple Mexico's capital until a disputed presidential election is decided.

Addressing about a half-million marchers filling the city's historic central plaza and spilling down fashionable Reforma boulevard, Lopez Obrador said, "I propose we stay here permanently until the court resolves this ... That we stay here day and night."

2. This is how democracy works in a corrupt environment.
When you have leaders with actual spines leading the cause. Obrador's call for peaceful demonstrations show both his power and restraint. Think we could run him in 2008 if things don't go his way in Mexico?

Gives me hope.
The handful of Plutocrats who run the US (both major political partys) had better take note.
I know Lieberman got his notice.

15. Link to report of 2.4 Million protesting in Mexico City
http://dailykos.com/storyonly/2006/7/30/154743/581

Is this accurate?

Even if the number is 1/2 or 1/4 reported here, it is newsworthy.
And failure to report it by the MSM is final proof needed that they
have no intention of reporting real news events.

I'm bookmarking your thread for posterity!

It should be very interesting seeing how Vicente Fox's administration deals with the knowledge so many people want the election to be recounted. If he denies them, he's really asking for it!

Thank you, cal04.

20. Hmmm ...How do the Police/Military disperse a crowd this big??
The answer is: THEY CANNOT!

Once you reach these kinds of numbers, the only people in danger are the police and military if they try to disperse this crowd. It is a testament to the will of these people that the protest have been peaceful so far.

The tribunal tasked with the job of certifying the the tainted election returns need look no further than out their window to see those who are demanding an honest outcome.

The fact that the Bush Administration and the US MSM has already addressed the "pretender" as the new president of Mexico prior to certification of the vote is evidence that they are attempting to create a self-fulfilling prophecy.

However, they have been wrong before. Go back and take a look at the coup to depose Chavez, and the protest in the streets that restored him to power after the US Media downplayed them, and the Bush Administration had already recognized the coup leaders as the new legitimate government. Weeks later they had to reverse course and acknowledge that Chavez was back in power. And US newspapers never admitted that the reported protest numbers to restore Chavez had been deliberately lowered to try and make it appear they were a minority of the populace.

Maybe Mexico can show the US populace how real protesting is done when an election is stolen.

"Once you reach these kinds of numbers, the only people in danger are the police and military. . ."

Suppose 100 million Americans went on strike and said we weren't going to quit until impeachment proceedings start? What could they do?

24. Well, Mel Gibson made CBS News ...Not a Word About Mexican Protest
So is this what we are teaching our children?

Stay up to date on news regarding celebrities, and their brushes with the law.
But don't expect to be informed about a million plus protestors in Mexico who are standing up to corrupt attempts to steal an election.

36. Know what I think es muy interesante?
During Election 2000, BOTH sides were yelling, screaming, fighting and pushing back. I find it amazing that Calderon's supporters don't seem to be involved in much counter demonstrations. Do they realize that they really didn't win the election?

I'm just curious. Why don't we see any counter demonstrations or protests?

Hmmm...

March on, democracy, march on! This is a beautiful sight!
