At Least 80 Civilians Die in Iraqi Violence
U.S. Helicopter Fires On Crowd in Baghdad

BAGHDAD, Sept. 12 -- Car bombings, mortar attacks and clashes between insurgents and U.S. and Iraqi security forces killed at least 80 civilians across the country Sunday, Iraqi officials said.

In Baghdad, the scene of some of the most intense fighting in months, at least 27 people were killed and 107 were wounded.

A U.S. military helicopter fired into a crowd of civilians who had surrounded a burning Army armored vehicle in the capital, killing 13 people, said Saad Amili, spokesman for the Health Ministry. Among those killed was a Palestinian journalist reporting from the scene for the Arab satellite network al-Arabiya.

The U.S. military said it was trying to scatter looters who were attempting to make off with ammunition and pieces of the Bradley Fighting Vehicle, which had been hit by a car bomb early in the morning on Haifa Street, a troublesome north-south artery west of the Tigris River.

1. But--but--but... republicans say it's just like Detroit !
Tom Delay, Dick Cheney and a whole bunch of republicans keep saying it's just like any big American city, what with all the crime and all. I've seen those posts from FreeRepublic where they all nod in agreement. They even have right-wing radio hosts who have visited the Green Zone and tell us everything is swell!

I live out in the country so I guess I just haven't seen the helicopter attacks in Detroit and Washington DC.

I'm sure those republicans wouldn't make such a boldfaced lie about the situation in Baghdad.

They are the party of morality, right?

7. That means that they expect to use attack helicopters in Detroit soon.
I suspect the neo-Cons view Iraq as a test bed for their plans for America. Martial law, torture, and crushing dissenters. Once they get the hang of it, the most brainwashed and battle scarred troops will be brought home to "quell unrest at home."

2. Of course, they weren't "targeting" civilians.
More "collateral damage" which the military spokesman will "regret" if anybody bothers to pay attention to the atrocity.

3. What is this posted?
Why would we want to read a year-old article?

Just a guess.

11. No, its not news
But from reading some of the posts here at DU of late, you'd think we'd forgotten that our own hands are smeared with the blood of innocents and civilians.

6. Its because this is not the LBN board
We can can post damned near anything we want to here. Been that way ever since I have been at DU. If you want to put time limits on stuff or change the DU rules to fit your needs you may want to discuss that with the administrators?

The grey legions of the dead fading out rapidly in the rear view mirror while we move on to the next atrocity.
