Schumer Says Bolton Won't Face Filibuster
Schumer Says Bolton Won't Face Filibuster

By RUSSELL BERMAN - Staff Reporter of the Sun
July 31, 2006

A Democratic filibuster of John Bolton's nomination as United Nations ambassador is "unlikely," Senator Schumer said yesterday.

Mr. Schumer supported an effort last year to block Mr. Bolton's nomination from gaining a full Senate vote, but he confirmed that he is considering changing his position.

New York's senior senator said he was weighing Mr. Bolton's backing of Israel against his unwillingness to work with other countries at the United Nations. "There's a good part of Bolton. He's been a staunch and very good defender of Israel," Mr. Schumer said on CNN's "Late Edition." "There's a bad part of Bolton. He seems to have a ‘go it alone' attitude at a time when we need the nations of the world on our side. We've seen that in Iran and North Korea."

Mr. Schumer said he had not made a final decision on which way to vote and that a lot of Democrats were also contemplating their position. The Democrats would need the support of 41 of their 45 members in the Senate to block Mr. Bolton's nomination. Three Democrats crossed over to oppose a filibuster last year, meaning that a shift of even a few senators would signal Mr. Bolton's confirmation. "I think that if you count the votes, a filibuster is unlikely," Mr. Schumer said.

"Ask not what your country can do for you. Ask what your country can do for Israel."

Why fight now?
After all our opposition party has done so well by conducting search and avoid missions for the last six years, why change?

Has Mr. Bolton changed in some material way? Last time 'round we actually managed to block his nomination, forcing ** into an embarassing recess appointment.

5. Yeah, like the next guy
Bush would send if Bolton went dow wouldn't be a support of Israel. He may have a few more tools in the shed than Bolton does though.

6. Excuse me while I write to my Senator.
He's used to hearing from me often. I'll remind him about Bolton's bad part.

10. I'm glad Schumer hasn't decided on a filibuster
But now would be a real good time for his office to issue a statement to that effect, if the Sun story has drawn the wrong conclusion.

Because it surely hurts Schumer's support in the country and damages his credibility for a story like this to sit out there in the Sun stinking up the joint. If the story's not true, Mr. Schumer, issue a press release that says so, straight out and without equivocation. Laughing staffers don't reassure me much at this point.

11. I suppose it might be a tad difficult to find a spine
when your head is up your ass. Just guessing though.
