WWIII
I heard on NPR, on the way to work, about Newt Gengrich said we are in the beginning of WWIII. The report said that they didn't call WWII, WWII until 1945. Some also called the Cold War, WWIII. What are your thoughts?

4. Welcome to DU!
:hi:

I think the Republicans would want nothing more than to have a WWIII so they can elevate Bush to the King of the World. It is their fantasy for world domination, imo.

6. Thought #1: Newt Gingrich is a sack of sh*t
....Thought #2: Newt Gingrich's head is shaped like a pumpkin

....Thought #3: If Newt Gingrich really wants WW III we need to send him into battle or in the case of a nuclear war, ground zero!

It seems these neocons all want a major war on the scale of a world war resulting in the world being reduced to ash and cinder. Screw them

9. They want this to be WW III - They need this to be WW III
World War is the only thing that could help their support for the destruction of America.
People are waking up and the regime needs a World conflict to allow them to continue to dismantle the Constitution without descent from those who allowed them to take over in the first place.

11. WWII was called WWII
by the beginning of 1940. I'm basing that on my reading of old Life Magazines. A college I attended had bound issues starting with their first one in November, 1936, and I read them sequentially up through March of 1945 (when we moved to another state).

WWI was called The Great War in this country pretty much until 1940, when all of a sudden it became WWI and the then-current war became WWII.

There are two WWI monuments here in Kansas City, one the Liberty Memorial(check it out here http://www.libertymemorialmuseum.org/) and the other the Rosedale Arch )http://www.kckps.k12.ks.us/departments/public_info/local.html) both have inscriptions which were done in the early 1920s and talk about "The World War". It's actually quite odd, since virtually everywhere else at that time, and for another two decades, it was called The Great War.

I just took another look at the link to the Liberty Memorial, and I see that it shows an inscription that says "The Great War". The Memorial was recently refurbished, and that's new addition. When we visited in the mid-90s we (my husband and I) were struck by the contemporary references to "The World War."

It's also well worth a visit, because it's pretty much the only real WWI museum in this country. That's the real forgotten war.

NPR is wrong about when WWII got that name.
