Jewish groups call for hate-crime probe on Mel Gibson
JEWISH groups have demanded Mel Gibson be investigated for hate crimes after the Hollywood star allegedly made anti-Semitic comments to US police officers when he was stopped on suspicion of drink-driving and speeding.

Gibson's reported criticism of Jews, contained in a leaked police report detailing his arrest early on Friday morning, included the phrase: "F*****g Jews. The Jews are responsible for all the wars in the world."

He has since apologised for his actions, saying they were "despicable", but community Jewish leaders called for Gibson to be ostracised from Hollywood, where the A-list actor is considered an industry powerbroker.

Calling for a criminal investigation into the Oscar-winning actor and director's remarks, Abraham Foxman, the national director of the US Jewish Anti-Defamation League, said: "We believe there should be consequences to bigots and bigotry."

25. No "crime", but he's a celebrity, public figure,
being an a**hole, making infammatory, anti-semitic comments.
I predict he's mostly done in Hollywood. That's proper punishment.

Foxman didn't ask for a criminal investigation at all. It seems like the newspaper is exaggerating this for whatever reason.

Edited on Mon Jul-31-06 05:48 PM by SammyBlue
Who is "they?" And if someone says something anti-Semetic, you bring the bigot down. It happened in Denver when the Nuggets Coach screamed "why don't you drink more, you drunken Mexican fuck."

Racism got OJ off because Mark Fuhrman (now a regular on the Sean Hannity show) dropped n-bombs!

So, is Jew hating acceptable? Is Mel Gibson okay for his Jew hating, because "they" brought Marlon Brando do his knees?

People like you make me sick!

on edit: No, the fuck didn't commit a hate crime, but my G-d, crucify him for his bigotry!

91. Although racism is despicable, I'm afraid it's not against the law.
That asshole Gibson wasn't making a speech, as I understand it, but was spewing the filth that lurks in his mind because he was wasted. My in-laws are anti-semitic and it's one reason I can't stand to be around them. Having said that, I don't consider their hideous talk around the barbeque Saturday night to be a hate crime, nor even hate speech, because it is intended for only the ears of a few. It stinks, it's low and creepy, but I don't believe it's a crime. And that may make you sick. I get that.

56. there IS no crime
in directing racist speech towards a police officer

if i was able to arrest every idiot who made a racial slur towards me while i, or my coworkers were in uniform, we would have had frequent flier miles on our handcuffs

racism is not a crime

nor is anti-semitism

mel is a anti-semitic kook. the DUI was a crime. directing sexist or anti-semtic comments at the arresting officer is NOT a crime

i have had racial slurs slung towards me LITERALLY scores of times during arrests, etc.

those are NOT crimes, and i have never charged anybody for such things because they are not illegal

2. That's unfortunate.
I'm no fan of Gibson's, but I think the perfect answer would have been to direct him to some Jewish center for community service and allow an understanding to develop through compassion. Forcing this as a criminal investigation is only going to fan the flames.

A handcuffed person in custody does not constitute a threat when they're just shooting off their mouth.

Mel Gibson driving around threatening people with anti-semitic smears would be a different matter.

he devoted half his show into trying to get a couple of Hollywood Gossip columnists to say that Gibson had "lost his mind" was "unstable" and Tucker practically had him as the most heinous Anti-Jewish actor who ever lived. He sounded like he wanted him committed in a mental hospital or in prison for life.

It was very strange.

How do Mel's idiotic comments, as anti-Semitic and embarrassing for him as they are, qualify as a "hate crime"? He was arrested for DUI, for crying out loud.

This throwing around of the term "hate crime" willy-nilly is starting to trivialize real crimes committed for reasons of bigotry. I'm tired of it.

Yes there is...he has been humiliated publically, and everywhere he goes everyone will know what he did...

Beyond that, how can you prosecute someone for being a bigot if that did not contribute to the crime...

And frankly, Gibson apologized, and hopefully he will be getting the help he needs.

Gibson is a jerk & an anti-Semite, but he can express any opinion he wants in his drunken rants. The crime is driving under the influence, not his hateful remarks.

Just wanted to include how incredibly disturbing this is: Gibson is producing a Holocaust mini-series?! Ugh.

"But she questioned whether a factual TV mini-series about the Holocaust that Gibson announced he was developing late last year would now be "too hot to handle". Gibson, a Christian fundamentalist, has in past refused to criticise his father, Hutton, who has been labelled a Holocaust denier over comments claiming the Holocaust was "mostly" fiction."

28. When exactly did Foxman supposedly make this statement?
The story says that the ADL is calling for a criminal investigation and quotes Foxman. Butthe statement issued by Foxman and the ADL did not say anything about any investigaton, criminal or otherwise. Here is the ADL statement :

"Mel Gibson's apology is unremorseful and insufficient. It's not a proper apology because it does not go to the essence of his bigotry and his anti-Semitism.

His tirade finally reveals his true self and shows that his protestations during the debate over his film "The Passion of the Christ," that he is such a tolerant, loving person, were a sham. It may well be that the bigotry has been passed from the father to the son. It is unfortunate that it took an excess of booze and an encounter with a police officer to reveal what was really in his heart and mind.

We would hope that Hollywood now would realize the bigot in their midst and that they will distance themselves from this anti-Semite."

It doesn't say anything about a criminal investigation.

http://www.adl.org/PresRele/ASUS_12/4861_12.htm

Abraham H. Foxman, ADL National Director, issued the following statement:

Mel Gibson's apology is unremorseful and insufficient. It's not a proper apology because it does not go to the essence of his bigotry and his anti-Semitism.

His tirade finally reveals his true self and shows that his protestations during the debate over his film "The Passion of the Christ," that he is such a tolerant, loving person, were a sham. In the 1950s and 60s, it was people on the left who were blacklisted for having the "wrong" beliefs, now some are calling for people on the right to be treated that way?

Gibson should get work in Hollywood based on the merits of his projects, and not his personal beliefs.

45. what a waste of time
Edited on Mon Jul-31-06 01:15 PM by pitohui
gibson is a pathetic drunk and a waste of skin but his crime -- drunk driving, resisting arrest, etc -- can be best dealt with by the courts

why give mr. gibson further publicity which will no doubt simply endear him to his fundy worshippers even more?

drunks in black out say stupid things, it isn't his demented comments that deserve further attention, it's his driving under the influenc which endangers people who have to share the roads with him

54. Give him the "anal probe"
The bush administration has produced the ideal element of torture, the "anal probe". :-)

It is inserted with minimal dialation, well if 2 inches is not painful for your average stool
diameter. But such intimacies aside, the bush family calls it "the inserter" and they use it
in family games. One family member inserts the probe, and another family member gets the remote.

Then, one family member gets another to drive his stupid car down the PCH with a fucking
bottle of tequila in it. And said wanker is screwed, remotely, by the bush probe. The probe
is 3 feet long, and eventually replaces the spinal column with its extended christianTM
networked ethicless faith-based nihilism. But pray for the probe, as it will sort you out,
as just a few moments in the intestines and you can be taken over without pain, just a few implants
and oh, what a joy, just watch cable TV.

55. Aren't the anti-Semitic killings in Seattle more important than this?
Gibson is a anti-Semitic Neanderthal who's just committed career suicide. Save the true "hate crime" terminology and wrath for that nutjob in Seattle.

77. OK
Sorry about that, didn't have the time to read it through, however, I am getting sick othis being the front News, while the real News of Iraq is on hold -- as usual. Any News is better than Iraq News, I guess.

As for Mel, hate me, but I do believe we all are racist to some extend. He and Michael Jackson can get together and have a good cry now !

"As for Mel, hate me, but I do believe we all are racist to some extend."

"We all" don't go on benders and get all anti-semitic and psycho. And this isn't the first time this racist, homophobic tool has expressed his hatred for minorities.

67. so simple I cannot comment
OK. I will.

Mel is a human. Drunken humans are known to behave badly. I know from personal experience. Mel is fundamentally a jackass, as am I and at least 51% of the males of the human race. Mel is rich from doing that movie. Great! Maybe he should cut back on the drinking and relax with his friends and family more. That being said, let's move on to something important. Like maybe Israel is a proxy of the US like Hezbollah is a proxy for Iran?

<big drunken grin>

been a few hundred cited. In any case, what exactly is false? Look, I have no dog in this fight, I think Gibson is pretty much an asshole regardless of this particular dustup. I guess I better go back through the thread to see what I was referring to since I don't even remember (or care, actually) what I was referring to...
I might be back...

edit: Okay, I see, I was referring to the fact that some people apparently think it's okay to make nasty comments about those they don't like but it's NOT okay for those 'other' people to return the favor.

As far as I know, this is simply false. ADL did not ask for that. This is all about how Jewish people control Hollywood, once again.

Not sure what the agenda of the OP was, however?

Here is ADL statement, in case anybody cares.

Republicans can get away with anything. If it had been a Dem who said that shit the reich wing media would be saying its the Democratic party that is responsible for the culture of corruption that creates such hate.

and I don't believe in blacklists. If they want to boycott his films, fine, but don't ban people because of their beliefs or speech.

"Hate Crimes" laws will be the death of free speech.

It's the same thing that happened when people got upset about the movie being anti-semitic. If they hadn't complained about it, Mel Gibson would probably be a few million poorer dollars poorer than he is now.
