She Makes me Cry as much as the Dead Children...

It is all so horrible. I want to hug her and make her safe....

1. OMG... I know....
We should be ashamed for not calling for a cease-fire. This is so disgraceful.

2. It is so very sad.
I think of my 84 year old mother and how she would handle such horrors. The pictures of the elderly in New Orleans hit me hard too.

4. Isn't it the Buddhists who say
that we should treat everyone as if they were our mother or father or some such. When does the human race grow up? When do we get on with the business of cleaning up our mess? When do we get to the point where we stop fighting and start working to make this a reasonably decent planet on which to live - for everybody? WHEN THE HELL DOES IT STOP!?

6. According to the Israeli Justice Minister...
...this woman is a terrorist.

You're all targets, Israel tells Lebanese in South

<snip>

"Everyone remaining in southern Lebanon will be regarded as a terrorist, Israel's justice minister said yesterday as the military prepared to employ "huge firepower" from the air in its campaign to crush Hizbollah.

Haim Ramon issued the warning as the Israeli government decided against expanding ground operations after the death of nine soldiers in fighting on Wednesday.

"What we should do in southern Lebanon is employ huge firepower before a ground force goes in," Mr Ramon said at a security cabinet meeting headed by Ehud Olmert, the prime minister. "Everyone in southern Lebanon is a terrorist and is connected to Hizbollah. Our great advantage vis-a-vis Hizbollah is our firepower, not in face-to-face combat."

8. I weep for all of them too
Look at the eyes of the man who is carrying the elderly woman. Despair?

All I can think about is my beautiful grandchildren and wonder who would justify bombing them. I see the women wailing, and I cry with them. I see fathers pulling their dead children from the rubble and can almost see my son holding one of his children. The woman in the pic is prolly somebody's grandmother. This is really just too much.

12. The Hezbollah extremists responsible for this conflict must be eliminated.
Edited on Mon Jul-31-06 05:55 PM by Clarkie1
They need to be eliminated from Lebanon in the name of all of the innocent dead. It is their hate that brought this war.

Never again. This time, the cycle stops because at least in Southern Lebanon, they will no longer exist. That is Israel's goal, and that is my hope. A peaceful, democratic Lebanon free of extremist militias.

It can't be done entirely through diplomacy.

13. They can't be eliminated
Edited on Mon Jul-31-06 06:15 PM by JackNewtown
Just ask that woman why...

They can be disarmed, though, but not via military means. If Israel's goal is to disarm Hezbollah it must stop enhancing Hezbollah's popularity in Lebanon via its campaign.

Israel's anti-terror record speaks for itself. When has its military pummeling of Lebanon or Palestine brought it security???

25. Probably not
While it is possible that a IRA-type disarmament may occur via intense political pressure, the Lebanese government probably will need to use force to disarm Hezbollah. No outside force can disarm Hezbollah. If that were possible, Israel would have done it long ago. Has Israel ever destroyed a terrorist group, whether it be Hamas, Hezbollah, or Islamic Jihad?

The most secure Israel ever got was during the height of the peace process. That was no coincidence.

There can be no peace until Hezbollah is completely disarmed. The Lebanese government was either unwilling or unable to do that. It's the only way for a lasting peace.

21. She's more likely to be a Hezbollah supporter than not
She's from Bin Jbail, after all.

I know it pains you that Hezbollah is a political movement as well as a terrorist group, and that old women like the one in the picture may support them. But it happens to be true, not that truth is much of an object for you.

22. You completely misunderstand me.
I understand the woman may indeed support Hezbollah, and Hezbollah is a political movement with a terrorist milita wing.

What I am saying is that there can only be lasting peace with the TERRORIST MILITIA WING of Hezbollah is removed, or totally disarmed, from Southern Lebanon. Otherwise, 5, 10, or 15 years from now the same cycle will repeat over and over.

Edited on Mon Jul-31-06 07:20 PM by alcibiades_mystery
Hezbollah is only a political movement with support because it has a militia wing. You call them terrorists, but their political supporters (old women included) most likely do not.

Listen. I agree with the previous resolution of the Shebaa Farms question, as backed by the UN resolutions and as a condition for withdrawal, etc. But neither the militia wing nor the political wing agree (we distinguish these at our peril, however much it feeds our illusions, and buys us out of shaking our fists at old women), and that's what this is all about. As long as a low intensity border war over the blue line areas are waged by both parties, old women who support the warring parties on both sides will continue to sit in rubble. Yelping about terrorism is as silly as Nasrallah yelping that Israel will be driven into the sea: both statements are more rhetorical effect than plausible reality, and neither statement untangles the mess, however good these kinds of statements make supporters feel.
