ABC News: Dolphins' Head Coach Saban Snubs Bush for Dinner
http://abcnews.go.com/Sports/wireStory?id=2258127

When the White House extended an invitation to dine with President Bush, Dan Marino accepted, but Miami Dolphins coach Nick Saban said no.

Saban said his obligations at training camp took priority over the chance to spend an evening with the president. Politics weren't a factor, he said.

"It was really a tough decision," Saban said Monday. "I feel like my first responsibility is our team. That in no way disrespects the importance of the opportunity I would have loved to have had to spend dinner with the president."

4. It couldn't have been entirely divorced from politics
since when has training-camp been so important that you miss dinner with the president? Unless that is, the president is a moron.

5. He was polite about it, unlike Tiger Woods w/ Clinton and Rachel Robinson

He was snarky in turning down the invitation to Shea to retire Robinson's number on all teams. Clinton AND Robinson's widow, Rachel.

7. My guess is it had everything to do w/ Katrina, since Saban
is most recently from LSU. Good for him. I know he's not going to SAY it isn't about politics, but no one refuses the pretzledent dinner unless he pretty much hates his guts. I'm impressed.

9. Saban is too focused to be distracted by the president
Too bad the president doesn't share Saban's work ethic. Saban has the Dolphins' upcoming season to worry about. He doesn't have time for photo ops and fancy dinners, unlike our president, who doesn't have anything as important as an upcoming football season to attend to. Just a little world war 3 in the middle east--but that won't stop him from getting to bed by 10:00--while Saban stays up late to study opposing defenses all night.
