Is it me or is the CBS Evening News getting worse?
Edited on Mon Jul-31-06 06:11 PM by Karmadillo
It's probably just me, but tonight's stories seemed even more dumbed down than usual. I guess that's to be expected with Bush buddy Bob Schiefer goofing through the half hour, but one would think they'd at least make an effort to appear serious.

1. Regarding Qana, Israelis still support the government because "they" believe Hezbollah was using the civilians as shields. Was any proof presented? No.

2. Global warming. It's happening! Unprecedented temperatures across the nation. And guess what? It used to be that all the pollution we had back in the sixties protected us from some of the warming by deflecting dangerous solar radiation. End of story. As if reducing that pollution was a mistake. No mention of what we should be doing to stop things from getting worse, no mention of that guy, I forget his name, who has a major documentary out about global warming.

3. We're saving less than we have since the Great Depression. We now have a negative savings rate. Why? Most people think their houses and stocks will continue to appreciate. As if most Americans have significant portfolios. Nothing about the growing gap between rich and poor or the pressure on the middle class through outsourcing or the insane push for people to buy crap in order to keep the economy moving or the stagnant wages for the poor.

At this rate, Katie Couric's arrival will be a step up.

1. I think you are hoping for a lot if you think Katie will be a step any
where but down. They haven't hit bottom yet.

2. I don't think Schieffer is a buddy; he can be very critical on Face
the Nation.
I have noticed nary a mention of Iraq recently. And did you notice they no longer take that minute or two to honor a dead soldier every night? I wonder who put the kabosh on that?

5. About the climate story. (#2)
Concerning global warming and their citation of global dimming effects,

They just don't get it, do they?

Global dimming is masking the full effects of greenhouse gas-based warming.
Unfortunately, the dimming effects are easily changed since it is based on particulate pollution.

What this means is that further reductions of particulate pollution could push climate change into a tail-spin. What's worse, finding the global dimming effects threw all the climate models out the door. One only hopes that science can fix the models so that they can find out what could happen before it's too late.

But, CBS didn't pick up on that. Not very good investigative reporting there, CBS.

6. Makes one wonder if
they don't want to get it. It's not like global dimming is top secret. It's hard to imagine journalists who know they have a fairly big audience treating a phenomenon with such a devastating impact so casually. There must be limits to corporate ownership of employees.
