Alito Can't Be Blocked - Same Old GOP Lie/PSYOP Strategy, Works Everytime?
Same Old GOP Lie/PSYOP Strategy - Works Everytime - Until we stop it!

If you call/write Senators or if you don't...
If the Dems filibuster or if they don't...

Let's Burn One Lesson Deep Into Our Collective Democratic Party Psyche:

How to Recognize and Respond to GOP PSYOPS:

First: Everything the GOP says is PSYOPS, it is all designed to defeat the 'enemy' -> US.

Second: In any particular battle, the GOP can be expected to announce "It Is Over, Dems Have Failed Again" way before it is clear what is happening, much less how it will resolve. Look for articles that begin "What the Dems can learn from failing to..."

Third: Send GOP Heavy Hitters to pressure CongressCritters while 1,000's of well-trained GOP foot soldiers call their Congressman. RIGHT NOW - 1,000's of GOP foot soldiers are calling Democratic Senators in Red States to tell them to vote for Alito, or else!

Fourth: Because Congress hears only from GOP citizens, they believe Dems don't care about the issue and their spines remain jello-like.

If you KNOW this already. WHY do you keep buying into it? Envious of Charlie Brown falling flat on his back over and over again when Lucy pulls up the football? Battered-wife syndrome?

It must be the fault of Dems in Congress - we just need *new* Dems. BULLSHIT.
It must be the fault of the GOP - they are so evil. BULLSHIT.

It must be the result of Dem citizens falling for GOP PSYOPS again. RIGHT.

Alito is NOT a done deal! This will NOT be over for several more WEEKS!

The Senate Dems need only 41 votes to keep a filibuster going - we CAN get 41 votes.

There are OVER 80 national groups that oppose Alito - environmental; civil rights; labor; lawyers; pro-choice; feminist; anti-violence; and more. There are only 6 extreme right-wing Rethug groups that support Alito.

Senator Reid is "trying to find the votes".
Lieberman is "open to a filibuster." Baucus is voting "No."

FIGHT feelings of powerlessness. FIGHT the GOP PSYOPS.
Take action to OPPOSE ALITO today and tomorrow and next week.

Use the media: Call radio talk shows, wite letters to the editor.

CALL YOUR SENATORS AND TELL THEM TO FILIBUSTER! 888-818-6641 and 888-355-3588

Call/Email The Gang of 14 Senators and Tell Them to Block Alito!
Contact Info posted as 1st REPLY Below!

Call/Email Red State Democratic Senators to Counteract the GOP footsoldier calls!
Contact Info posted as 2nd REPLY Below!

GOP PSYOPS TECHNIQUE 2 IS UPON US: OSAMA IS COMING! OSAMA IS COMING! You Dems better shut up about Abramoff and don't dare fight the Alito nomination - you traitors!

6. I have mixed feeling about a filibuster
but the news about Baucus actually points towards there not being a filibuster. If you say you are going to vote, you are, by definition, operating outside the filibuster parameters.

10. I am not at all sure that Baucus was ruling out a filibuster. We were not
given his exact words...only the fact that he is voicing his opposition to Alito. I think that there is still a good chance to defeat Alito and that there is a groundswell of opposition.

12. Are you listening to Lea hy on C-span? It seems to me the Dem's
are laying the groundwork for a filibuster. They are building a case not to vote no, and let this go through. They are going to this great effort to explain to the American people why they are going to block, obstruct, the nomination of Alto.

If they were going to just vote no and let it go through on Republican votes they would have already let it move out of the judiciary committee and be voting 'no' today.

This is a major effort to inoculate themselves from the natural consequences of a filibuster, ie that the Republicans will charge bad faith obstructionism.

Believe it.

16. I couldn't listen to him
but I read the transcript. I hope you're right. I still have mixed feelings about the efficacy of the filibuster, particularly in light of Stevens' advanced age. Nevertheless, Alito is so bad, that a filibuster truly is warrented.

7. I agree. It ain't over 'till it's over and this ain't over by a long shot
I'm calling Randi Rhodes today to ask her listeners to call/e-mail their Senators and ask them to filibuster. That way I can talk directly to a few million people at one time. If 3% respond, that's a shit load of call/e-mails.

We have the power. It's up to the people of the US to safeguard our democracy. it ain't about the leaders. If the people lead, the leaders will follow.

I can guarantee you you this; If the right-wing base didn't like Alito, bush would follow what they told him to do and Alito would be gone. We saw this clearly with Meirs.

Why does the left think it's different on our side, somehow?

17. The easiest nationwide talk show to get on is
the Alan Colmes show. He takes a LOT of callers and they don't sceen out ANY viewpoint.

It's a shorter wait and if you call early you WILL get on the air, and fairly quickly. Also, you won't be preaching to to the choir. He's on a lot of typically right wing, middle of the road and lefty stations.

Say something contriversial first thing, like "Alito is a fascist" and he will give you a lot of air time. Controversy is good for ratings, and makes for good talk radio.

Colmes will say something like "well he may be very conservative but how can yo call him a fascist."

This is your opening to make a case.

Good luck, have fun, and "USE the Power" to our advantage.

There are millions more of us not affiliated with any of those groups.

The Senate must listen to the will of the people. If they refuse, they're just another expensive decoration in their historical offices.

11. Now is the time to Resist...
Many suffer from "learned helplessness" as a result of the seeming insignificance of the individual in today's society. The thing is, if enough individuals resist this sense of helplessness and fight, very quickly they become a force to be reckoned with. Republicans are counting on Democrats continuing to choose to 'play nice' and seek to resolve issues through the traditional methods of negotiation and consensus building, while failing to take direct offensive action.

Now's the time to break the pattern, throw off your shyness and call your congressman/woman and make your views known, otherwise, not feeling supported, it's all to easy for them to just go with the flow. If you feel as sensation that 'good citizens' don't make waves, you should recognize that this is the result of conditioning (thought control) foisted upon us by those who control the media, and it's false. Activism and political involvement not only is not an undesirable social behavior (engaged in by radicals and troublemakers), it is, in fact, every citizens duty. Take pride in that duty and your rights as an American citizen to have a say in their government, recognize that your Congressman (who probably delights in the trappings of such an important national office) in reality is your public servant. You have every right to make your opinion known and tell them what you think they should do! Call them, or at the very least email them, and do it now for we cannot afford Alito on the Supreme Court (essentially for life!).

19. Other Points Folks May Find Useful
Edited on Thu Jan-19-06 01:47 PM by pat_k
Your point is critical. Their pronouncements of "Can't Happen" (which we also hear from many on "our side" too) must ALWAYS be rejected. "Can't Happen, So Don't Try" may be the biggest block to action we face. " Inaction leads to defeat. Defeat leads to hopelessness, and on and on. . . Hope and confidence motivate action. Action leads to victories. Victories breed hope. . . and on and on.

On Alito
You can send email and telegrams via congress.org (See "Extra Impact" for telegrams). The site also provides look up for congress critters and local media.

An OFFICE VISIT has enormous power. Where are your Senators' local offices?. Can you get there? Deliver a letter. Ask to talk to staff.

To win -- however you make contact, but particularly if you visit -- invoke moral principles and self-evident truths, NOT legalisms. As an ordinary citizen you cut through the propaganda they are immersed in.

Points You May Find Useful
  • The fascist fantasies they invoke to convince us their crimes are not crimes must be rejected out of hand. Their fantasies are NOT ideas to be "argued on the merits." They are fantasies that must be rejected out of hand; they have no place in the "marketplace of ideas."

  • The NUMBER 1 problem the Democrats have is that the nation views them as weak. Fighting the critical battles WITH EVERYTHING THEY'VE GOT proves strength, conviction, and courage. Failure to stand up proves impotence, equivocation, cowardice. The choice is black and white.

  • Alito must be rejected to on principle -- American principle vs Fascist principle.
It is lunacy to think the constitution gives (or even might give) the President the power to flagrantly violate the collective will of the people codified in the acts and resolutions passed by our Congress.

  • Alito told us everything we need to know about him when he offered his standard response -- that he couldn't offer an opinion; that he'd figure it out if it came to the Supreme Court -- to the hypothetical case Sen. Biden posed. (If We the People, through our representatives in the Senate and House, passed a resolution prohibiting the President from ordering any sort of attack on Iran, could the President ignore our will and order Bombs to be dropped on Iran?)

  • Like the child who knew the emperor had no clothes, ordinary citizens see the truth. They know that such absolute power is NEVER freely given to a leader; it is only taken by deception or force.

  • Alito is emblematic of the ever-expanding dictatorial powers claimed by the Bush Syndicate. The fight to keep Alito off the Court is our Normandy in the fight to defend our constitutional democracy.

  • We expect the men and women of our armed services to risk life and limb to fulfill their oath to support and defend the Constitution of the United States against all enemies, foreign and domestic. Every member of Congress takes the same oath. We will not tolerate dereliction of duty.

25. Here's what I wrote to my senator about Alito & expanding prez powers
Edited on Fri Jan-20-06 02:31 AM by Wordie
Feel free to copy this, chop it up, edit it, or change it in any way that suits your needs:

Dear Senator XXX:

I am writing to you to urge a "No" vote on the confirmation of Judge Alito as Supreme Court Justice. I am particularly concerned about your vote because I know you voted in favor of Judge Roberts' confirmation. Although was opposed to the confirmation of Judge Roberts, I can understand how his impeccable credentials and the support of so many in our country persuaded you to vote for him. Alito, however, is a very different case.

You have said, in reference to President Bush's startling revelation that he had authorized spying on American citizens, "America is a country built on the rule of law and the knowledge that no one is above those laws. Those in power are in charge of upholding our laws, not undermining them."

I applaud your statement, and hope that you will recognize that if Judge Alito were to be elevated to Supreme Court Justice, he would pose a threat to the rule of law that we, as American citizens, value so dearly. Judge Alito, in a speech to the Federalist Society in 2000, said, "...the Constitution makes the president the head of the executive branch, but it does more than that.'" More specifically, he said that, "'The president has not just some executive powers, but the executive power -- the whole thing."

Refering to the theory of the "unitary executive," Judge Alito went on to say, "I thought then, and I still think, that this theory best captures the meaning of the Constitution's text and structure."

It appears that there were some in the Senate who were fully satisfied with Judge Alito's answers to the questions posed to him on these important constitutional issues. Judge Alito said, "No person in this country is above the law, and that includes the president, and it includes the Supreme Court." He also said, "Neither the president nor anybody else...can override a statute that is constitutional." Yet as a Supreme Court Justice, Alito himself would be in a position to determine the constitutionality of our laws, and thus determine, in any particular legal challenge to the President's actions that might arise, if the President was actually required to follow them; he would be the one to determine the constitutionality of the laws themselves. Consequently, the assurances he gave in the hearing mean little, although they sounded good.

When he was later questioned about specific constitutional issues, Judge Alito refused to answer, citing the possibility that such a question could come before him, should he be confirmed. So, although it appeared that Judge Alito had backed away from his earlier statements on the expansion of presidential power, in fact his statements can also be seen as an intellectually nimble and highly effective way of avoiding the question.

As Media Matters recently pointed out, "Alito's statement only raises questions; it doesn't answer them. What is the scope of Congress' constitutional authority? What is the scope of the president's constitutional authority? Alito's statement says nothing about that balance of power..."

In a statement you made on your website just after Judge Alito was nominated, you said that one of the criteria you would use in deciding whether to support any candidates confirmation was, "...will they uphold our rights and liberties?" You said that you wanted a nominee who would represent mainstream judicial thought and would unite the American people. There are grave questions remaining, even after the Judiciary Committee hearings, about many things regarding Judge Alito. He does not meet the criteria you set.

There are lots of other reasons to vote against Judge Alito: his record shows him to be a supporter of business interests over those of the little guy; he was a member of an organization that took a completely unacceptable stand regarding civil rights and diversity; he is against choice. But those reasons, all of which both you and I care about deeply, pale in comparison to the risk that Alito poses, in what could be a decades-long tenure on the Supreme Court, to the liberties that so many Americans have sacrificed to uphold. You MUST vote against this nominee, and if called upon to do so, support a fillibuster against him. As your constituent, I am depending on you.

Thank you.

Sincerely,

P.S. I know you must be concerned about the threat of the nuclear option in the event of a fillibuster, but in the event of a strong and united Democratic effort against Alito, don't you think such a threat would probably vanish? The Rebublicans, after all, don't really want to lose the fillibuster either. And ask yourself this: when measured against the risk Alito poses to the traditional checks and balances that our system of government and our liberties depend on, isn't it WORTH risking the fillibuster to stop him? The American people are depending on you and your Democratic Senate colleagues to stand up and call the Republican's bluff.

26. Good call. The entire Left needs crisis counseling, ASAP.
Then a large portion of it should get serious deprogramming.

29. Did you see buzzflash's headline?

It is about Frist's saying that Alito is the dems worst nightmare.

And, then they say that the Democrats won't fillibuster.

Instead of bitching, I wish they would post savethecourt.org and tell people there is hope. But, the hope is us and we must make it SO overwhelming that they listen to us.

This fight is NOT over. And, I am sick of every liberal site using the GOP propaganda against us!
