What to Wear When Visiting Hospital Patients ---pix->>>

Barbara Bush, daughter of U.S. President George W. Bush, participates in a discussion with her mother, U.S. first lady Laura Bush (not pictured), during a visit to Saint Mary's Hospital in Gwagwalada, outside of Abuja, Nigeria, Wednesday, Jan. 18, 2006. The U.S. government is supporting Saint Mary's Hospital in preventing mother to child transmission of HIV by providing antiretroviral drugs which are being distributed free of charge. she was interrupted from a nap and told to get her ass out there and pose for the cameras. You would think her mother or an aide would have told her to button her blouse and hide the bra straps. This is a trip at taxpayer expense. If she's going to go, she ought to make some effort to look presentable when cameras are present.

59. Washington Post Blue-Bloods

Now maybe you people see why the Clintons are so hated by the DC press corps. It is a popular myth that anybody in this country can grow up to become President. But when a poor boy from Arkansas did just that, the DC blue-bloods were willing dupes for the new Rightwing propaganda machine.

Remember W's first inaugural? Outside the White House as the Clintons left, W's supporters chanted, "at last the hillbillies are gone!"

Some of those supporters, disgusted that the Presidency had been occupied by a commoner, fired up the rumours of "trashing the White House" and "stealing the silverware". I found the reaction by the nominaly liberal members of the DC press corps very enlightening. Almost to the person, now that they no longer had any reason to rally around Clinton, they joined their conservative counterparts hollering that, "we always knew they were white trash".

And to see this same crap right here at DU....

21. Maybe the shirt doesn't fit anymore.
It looks like the first set of buttons aren't completely buttoned. Maybe it is too tight for her and instead of having a gap where the button holes don't quite meet the buttons, she left it open to make it look like it was supposed to be that way.

Hasn't she been in South Africa for quite some time now? Hasn't she been out of the spotlight, like there have been NO pictures of her for say NINE MONTHS? Maybe her boobs have gotten larger and she no longer fits into her old clothes.

I still think she looks like Lee Harvey Oswald.

24. Nigeria is 50% Muslim ... probably including the woman to Barbar's left
Such 'fashion' shows a cultural insensitivity, imho. No, I'm not saying she should wear a hajib! I'm merely suggesting that a sane, respectful person would opt to dress to the more modest end of their own 'fashion spectrum' when they're, under any sense of the word, 'representing' a country rather than merely engaging in private toursim. When, instead, she chooses a style that's clearly to the less modest end of her own cultural fashion spectrum, it's rational and sane to infer that she's being grossly insentive if not deliberately disrespectful.

It's just not a time for her accommodate the "Show us your tits!" clarion cry of her habitual venues.

65. As a guest, one should be both respected and respectful.
Edited on Thu Jan-19-06 07:07 PM by TahitiNut
Hospitality is a fundamental duty of Muslims, perhaps more in Arab countries, but nonetheless fundamental to the faith in all Islam. The expected reciprocation on the part of the guest is neither onerous nor secret - it's to desist in any proselytizing and to dress modestly. Indeed, as a young unmarried woman, Barbar's dress would be regarded as even more sluttish and disrespectful than if Laura were to dress that way. In a sense, though, I guess she's merely inviting the regard she's earned.

What frosts my toenails is the fact that, as a diplomatic representative of my country, her nauseating sluttishness and abysmal cluelessness reflects on all of us! This isn't a discussion regarding how she dresses in her own neighborhood or as a mere tourist. About that I don't give a shit. This is about putting her in a visible role as a representative of me and my nation. It's a fucking insult!

She's a young lady dressing as young ladies do. If Chelsea wore something like this, we wouldn't care. This thread is petty, trivial, and says that a woman can't wear a light shirt with a hint of cleavage in a tropical country if she wants to. Spare me. She can wear what she wants.

This young lady is an official goodwill ambassador of the U.S. attending state functions in foreign lands. On my dime. This is not Brad and Jen. This is the U.S. government's representative in Africa, and the Bush admin is milking every photo-op to convince the public that the U.S. is doing what it should to fight AIDS. Lies and more lies and she's the propaganda tool for it. If you love the Lounge hie there yourself.

49. Normally I would agree about clothing threads, but she pulled a Cheney
Cheney and his dogsledding outfit was in poor taste and so it this half-buttoned, sloppy undergarment look. She is not a petulant teenager, she's an adult who should know better. The outfit is wholly inappropriate for the venue and she's a representative of the U.S. government in Africa. There is no excuse for it. This outfit just says "whatever." I wouldn't waste my time commenting on it if she were wearing it at an outdoor cafe in America --then it would be her business alone.

... is a Lounge topic. Diplomacy may not be important to the Bushbots (or their mirror images), but it's important enough to be discussed in a political forum, imho. Just because some might be myopic regarding the mores and protocols of diplomacy in Nigeria and other lands, that doesn't mean it's insignificant.

48. the shirt is too small
It looks like the armholes are cutting into her armpits, that bothers me more than the cleavage. It looks very painful. I think she should have buttoned up the shirt a little, but I've had problems myself with those kinds of buttons coming undone on their own. Maybe she didn't notice. I'll give her the benefit of the doubt. However, she can afford to wear clothes that fit a little better.

55. I see the religious right is live and well at DU.

Like the form fitting dress she wore the other days, I think this outfit looks very ... liberal of her!

Go for it, Barbara! And to heck with all the sticks-in-the-mud here.

72. When in Rome, dress as the Romans do to show respect and not offend
bare arms and chests are considered offensive in many countries, hence the women wear sleeves, like most of them in these pictures. Children can sometimes get away with less stringent behavior. It has nothing to do with fashion and in many places this outfit would be fine, but as the daughter of Mr.bush, she should have been dressed more modestly.

78. complete and utter BS
And if she dressed more 'modestly', then what???? Does that somehow mean something? Like it helps his image????

It just sounds so...so....RW. Dress modestly, hem at the knees, sleeves over arms...just add the goddamn burka while you're at it. :puke:

91. Yes it does sound conservative. But that's how they dress there.
And showing respect for the country you are visiting is a good thing. I am glad to be able to wear tanktops here, but must dress more modestly at work also. No need for a burka, but showing respect for where you are visiting is polite, unless you are there to try to change their dress code.

90. Because she is dressed for a Girls Gone Wild video -
- not for an afternoon of prayer and discussion with African women with AIDS. That's what it has to do with. She is there as an ambassador of the United Staes, and she treats it like a big joke, just as her father treats the Constitution. That's why.

64. Two questions:
1. Exactly what is wrong with her dress? I don't get it. And if I did, I still wouldn't care.
2. Is the answer to #1 even remotely as important as just about anything else we could rather focus on right now?

some places this is fine. Where she is, as a representative of the USA, it is showing disrespect for the mores and the culture.

This is almost certainly part of the Bush Administration's "Crusades."

Even if the young Barbara Bush is unwitting, someone in the party delibrately let this pass.

79. It's Not Barbara In This That I Have A Problem With
She's still young and immature.

But if you were her friggin mother, at an event this friggin important, could you possibly not tell your daughter "Have some class and button that other button. We are here on important business for gods sake"

That is what I'm in awe of. Laura is sittin right there next to her. What kind of mother is she to have not strongly advised barbara to dress more appropriately?

82. when DO republicans grow up?
"She's still young and immature"

She's 23 at least. An age when a large number of people in this world have adult responsibilities, such as jobs and families. She's old enough to sign binding contracts, vote, drink, join the military - in other words, she's an adult.

Jeesh. It's like her father all over again - just one more youthful indiscretion. i refuse to cut her any slack for her behavior- and her an Ivy League graduate to boot.
