but even if she did, what about her family? She is obviously very close to them, and I can't imagine that she would leave, even if she could, if they were stuck there.

I mean, people in NOLA died because they couldn't leave beloved pets behind (as I know I could not have done, either). How much less likely is it that a woman like Riverbend would abandon her family and escape to freedom and safety, even if she could?

Riverbend is not very popular over there (at least not among Shi'ites); if she left it might make it obvious to some Bad Guys who she really is.

9. I wonder, too, where do they go when they leave?

What will happen to them?

I sometimes wonder if we’ll ever know just how many hundreds of thousands of Iraqis left the country this bleak summer. I wonder how many of them will actually return. Where will they go? What will they do with themselves? Is it time to follow? Is it time to wash our hands of the country and try to find a stable life somewhere else?

It reminds me a bit of the survivors of KatrinaBush. I know that it is not the same, but the displacement of so many, thrown to the wind.
