Thousands to march in support of immediate ceasefire (UK)
05 August 2006
The largest peace march since before the Iraq invasion is expected to descend upon Downing Street today demanding that Tony Blair calls for an unconditional ceasefire in the Middle East.

In a powerful demonstration of the groundswell of opinion across Britain, as many as 100,000 people are predicted to take to the streets around Parliament Square.

As Mr Blair was this week forced to concede that even members of his cabinet had "doubts" over his handling of the situation, protesters will deliver children's shoes to his London home to represent those whose lives have been lost in the 24-day conflict.

A letter bearing 40,000 signatures will also be handed in, calling on Mr Blair to work towards ending the "bloodshed and destruction unfolding daily".

2. A big thumbs up for the Brits
Does the British media cover protests like this, or do they act like the US media?

3. Downing Street is probably still blocked at both ends.

It's now (effectively) Downing Plaza or Downing Porch, I think - no admission to the public. Once upon a time, BT (before Thatcher), I could walk on the sidewalk and smudge a window pane at No. 10 with my finger. No more. (sigh)

I guess they could fill the parade grounds of the Queen's Horse Guards.

6. This is a very important global event.
I hope the significance of this is not lost by the petty corporate media whores.

8. ...and WHERE IS AMERICA???
Where are our demonstrations against the murdering in the Middle East these days?? Nonexistent!! Nothing bothering us about Iraq, Lebanon?? We just go on making the bombs, putting rivets in the helmets, training the less fortunate to go die for nada...and we wait and watch the Brits demonstrate. I guess we are that afraid, eh?

9. I don't understand it either, Hulk.
Especially since we're a lot more complicit in this bloody mess than the Brits.

Welcome to DU, BTW. :hi:

16. My first thought, too. Where are the demonstrations in the U.S.?
It is absolutely unconscionable that the so-called "civilized" world has stood by and allowed the mass murder of children and the destruction of Lebanon to proceed apace.

but I know many people on DU are weary of ANSWER (and for good reasons). If you're interested there's something about it on ANSWER's webpage http://answer.pephost.org/site/PageServer?pagename=ANS_August12 Also, United For Peace And Justice has something about it on their website http://unitedforpeace.org/calendar.php?calid=17423

18. Oh goody. We can have a demonstration about 40 different causes
and distract everyone from the war.

19. I have similar feelings about ANSWER...
but people were asking if there were going to be any demonstrations in the US, so that's why I brought it up.

to hammer the point home - oh my. I'm guessing the world press will cover this and yet it won't be shown in the USA.

22. Learn and Participate for a Better Future
My message is directed primarily at those people who are
not the most advantaged in society or high on the totem pole,
if you will. Life isn't fair, so try to realize that others
in the world share even greater difficulties than you may
have.
Creating a world and society that is the best that can be
requires that people understand as much as they can about the
world and participate in what ever way they can to making
things better. I hope you will take seriously a commitment to
making a contribution to that effort. The future of life
depends on the decisions we make. I sincerely hope that
people can achieve success for humanity and themselves and
that learning and thinking is critical.
