Raw Story acquires 91-page Republican playbook for 'homestretch' campaign
Raw Story acquires 91-page Republican playbook for 'homestretch' campaigning
RAW STORY
Published: Friday August 4, 2006

A massive, 91-page memo to Senate Republicans outlining strategies for "homestretch" campaigning during the August recess, has been acquired by RAW STORY.

The document, signed by Senators Rick Santorum (R-PA) and Kay Bailey Hutchison (R-TX), reveals plans to focus Republican Senatorial campaigns on three themes.

Next week, Republicans will tout efforts to "secure America's prosperity" through a variety of programs. Plans for small business health insurance pooling, spending reductions, increased domestic oil drilling, and "permanent death tax reform" are all to be pushed at the state level.

Mid-month, Republicans are expected to shift gears, focusing voter's attention instead on a variety of values-based initiatives. "Democrats oppose preserving a clear definition of marriage, are blocking child custody protections, and have obstructed the confirmation of fair judges," the document reads. "Republicans are committed to protecting these traditional values by fostering a culture of life, protecting children, banning internet gambling and upholding the rule of law."

(snip)

Republicans then plan to spend the month's remaining two weeks promoting the party's efforts in regard to homeland security.

And here, my friends, is Santorum's & Hutchison's letter at the beginning of this 91-page document...

SENATE REPUBLICAN CONFERENCE
109th Congress

Rick Santorum, Chairman
Kay Bailey Hutchison, Vice Chairman
August 3, 2006

Dear Colleagues:

During the August recess period, we have the opportunity to highlight our accomplishments in the Senate and
our continued dedication to Securing America’s Future. Senate Republicans remain committed to securing
America’s homeland, prosperity, and values.

We are dedicated to defending America and securing the homeland by completing the mission in Iraq, hunting
down terrorists around the world, and securing our borders and ports. With the passage of the Defense Authorization
bill, the Homeland Security Appropriations bill, and the Reauthorization of the Patriot Act, Senate
Republicans have demonstrated their ongoing commitment to fighting to protect our nation. We have also
increased significantly resources to protect our borders.

Senate Republicans also remain committed to Securing America’s Prosperity. Republican pro-growth tax relief
policies have fueled 3 years of job creation and nearly 5 years of overall economic growth. More Americans are
working today than ever before, wages continue to rise, and federal tax revenues are surging, producing fasterthan-
expected deficit reduction progress. While the economy is making significant progress, we can still do
more to help American families.

To sustain our strong economic growth and to help the American people with the cost of living, we will remain
committed to lowering gas prices and securing America’s energy independence through increasing American
energy supplies and sources; supporting America’s small businesses; securing affordable and accessible health
care for all Americans; and keeping money in the pockets of American families by extending tax cuts and limiting
spending. We are committed to securing America’s competitiveness and creating new jobs through continued
economic growth.

Our nation shares values that have defined the American character, helped those in need, protected our families,
and shaped our society. As Republicans, we are committed to securing and upholding these values by supporting
parents, keeping our children safe, and promoting healthy communities.

Please continue to communicate the vision and accomplishments of our Conference by supporting our positive
agenda to Secure America’s Future.

Thank you.

Rick Santorum
Chairman

Kay Bailey Hutchison
Vice-Chair

Private Sector Jobs: Net Four-Year Loss
http://uspolitics.about.com/b/a/145081.htm 02.08.05
News reports suggested that January job data spared President Bush from joining Herbert Hoover as the only president to see a net job loss during a four-year term. However, under Bush's watch, private sector jobs dropped 760,000, according to January 2005's anemic job growth projections. Bush's public reputation was spared only because of growth in government sector jobs, a cushy buffer missing during the Hoover days.

In January 2000, when President Bush took office, there were 111,622,000 private sector jobs in the US. Projected numbers for January 2005 are 110,862,000, a net loss of 760,000 private sector jobs. In comparison, in January 1997 there were 101,639,000 private sector jobs -- meaning 9,983,000 were created during President Clinton's second term of office.

As other analysts have pointed out, the recession can no longer be used as the whipping boy for this abysmal economic performance: it's been over for three years.

Nice work 'faith-based' party of deception and outsourcing. We had a Democrat run in the VA primary who was the author of outsourcing legislation, Harris Miller. He was also the chief lobbyist for the e-voting machine manufacturers. Webb took him out but the absolute nerve of this guy to run just blew me away. He was trounced in Northern Virginia by the informed members of the tech community who showed up to beat him. The nerve of these idiots who betray the people on a regular basis, the people who elect them, pay them, and give them the opportunity for "the main chance," their hiring on as fat-cat lobbyists. Time for a big change.

On edit: And these clowns actually expect us to blieve that Bush won in 2004:rofl:

23. As is the rest of this farce of a document.
Page 4:

"However, we need to strengthen our ports and borders" By giving them to Dubai?

"complete the mission in Iraq" What is the mission... this week? And, btw, why did this 'mission' ever start?

"hunt down terrorists around the world" Except for bin Laden, I guess... didn't bush say he was no longer concerned w/finding bin Laden? Guess they mean those Quaker terrorists.

"Congress also needs to continue to strengthen border security and enforce our immigration laws with worker verification." "Continue"?!?!?!?!? "Continue"?!?!?!?!? When is this repub controlled Congress going to start doing this?

"we need to do more to help people with the cost of living." No shit. Cutting taxes for the extremely wealthy sure ain't doing it.

"Congress needs to pass small business health plans to make health insurance more affordable" Now, they wouldn't want to piss off the insurance industry, would they?

"stop Democrat tax increases" What Democratic tax increases?

"and balance the budget in 5 years"

"lower gas prices by decreasing dependence on foreign oil and develop alternative energy sources" I guess ANWR is an alternative to the Middle East... let's not worry about further destroying the environment, though.

"raise income levels for every American by creating the best educated and trained workforce in the world." Doesn't education need to be funded for this?

And this only from the first two paragraphs of page 4.

6. Let's not laugh too hard and potentially distract us from GOP tactics
No matter how weak they may appear now, they are WAY BETTER at GRINDING out the win and getting their base out. We should have learned that by now after 2000 and 2004. As laughingly lame as they look, and no matter how stupid they appear, they have retained power 6 years longer than they should have to the great detriment of this country. Pay attention and DON'T Laugh at their tactics!! THEY WORK!! We have to counter that!

initiatives EXACTLY as Republicans would like them to be presented.

I bet if you saw the Democrats play book for a homestretch campaign, you would end up not seeing a single one of their themes appear in the media. The media prism would completely distort the Democratic message, whereas at it will sharpen the focus of the themes the Republicans want the public to see.

Muthanna is the SW district.

36. So, what's the Dem's plan? Are they gonna come out strong and point
out that the repubs only make these things their 'priority' during campaign time and then as soon as they get into office they go 180 degrees the other way? Are they going to come out forcefully and point out the corruption and greed of these people, how they can vote benefits and raises for themselves and then cynically and corruptly tie an increase in the minimun wage to another tax break for themselves and their rich buddies. Are they gonna point out the individual sleeze factor of Frist, Hastert, Boehner, etc. who are republican party icons? And the wars, are they gonna come out big on the cost of these wars in lives and dollars that we cannot afford?

Or are they gonna just lay back and hope that the people do what's in their best interests and get the jackals out of Washington? What about Diebold and ES&S.

I want to see some fire in our party this year. I don't just mean Liebermann's skewering, I mean in all the races. I got REALLY UPSET when I saw the endorsement of that frigging Schwartzenegger over Angelides today by some of Hollywood's biggest names. That, to me, epitomizes what's wrong with this damn party. The quislings are still running it. And that includes the DLC and Carville, etc.

42. Don't underestimate their ability to bullshit the people.

We need to learn from this what they will be saying and be prepared for the catapult of dung. If not the media will repeat the litany so many times some people will go into zombie mode and believe it. Be prepared with a counter to each point. To you and me it seems absurd, but to brainwashed massed they will fall for it if we don't keep them directed to reality.

43. Looks like a False Flag operation to me.
In other words, this was prepared and leaked to a progressive to give all of you fine folk on DU, and the Democratic candidates (who are not all fine people), a false sense of confidence.

Expect or rely on this Republican plan and we will be screwed even more than if we ad-libbed responses to the Republicans.

45. FEAR, FEAR, FEAR!!!
It will be the "fear factor" that wins them the votes. Keep America thinking that they are actually "safer" with this jackasses in Washington. We are too damn dumb to think rationally, so we won't bother looking back to the past 6 years and seeing how much more unsafe we are, but we can be scared into voting to keep us "more safe" in the future. It will be this factor alone that wins them votes. Mark my word!!

48. Gee. Where do I register republican and what flavor was that koolaid?
Sounds like just the right mix of lies, reptilian fear, and elitism to set up those divides and get votes. We must counter with, "same song no results", reality.

How easy it is to sell self preservation to ego driven republicans and mindless voters? Very. Let's shake out these notions before BushCo is perceived again as Savior.

Anyone see our Democratic written counter plan yet?

75. Voters buy it- from CNN, FOX, NBC, MSNBC, ABC, CBS, etc.
If this "shit" had to stand on its own, with only the Republicans themselves to sell it to the voters, I don't think many would "buy it" at all. The (and I mean THE) problem is, the corporate media is devoted to selling whatever the Republican party wants to sell, no matter how dishonest and absurd. The American media can do one thing well: sell shit.

79. what it says versus what it really means
(what it mean is in boldface)

Next week, Republicans will tout efforts to "secure America's prosperity" through a variety of programs.:

Plans for small business health insurance pooling: bonuses for insurance companies
spending reductions programs which value families are cut
increased domestic oil drilling CA-CHING CA-CHING for oil companies
"permanent death tax reform" The haves and have mores get even more

Mid-month, Republicans are expected to shift gears, focusing voter's attention instead on a variety of values-based initiatives : Herrrrre comes the Wedgies - GGGOP (God, Guns and Gays)

When the "leading light" names that spearhead this are Sanitorium and KayBay.

I guess that's what happens when you have an imperial presidency, gotta have worker gnomes instead of leaders in Congress. The only leaders are Mafia thugs like DeLay.

That having been said, how can any of this "strategy" be surprising to anyone at this point? Same old.
