Treason and corruption among allegations made

WINDOW ROCK, Ariz. - Navajo presidential candidates sharply criticized Navajo President Joe Shirley Jr. and Vice President Frank Dayish Jr., and accused the team of corruption and failing to fulfill their promise to bring economic development to the Navajo Nation.

During the Navajo Nation Presidential Candidate Forum 2006, the division caused by the Navajo president and vice president running against one another in the race was also in focus.

Presidential candidate Hoskie Bryant of Naschitti, N.M., was asked if Dayish's action of running for president against Shirley was treason. Bryant said it was treason.

''Once you take your oath, it is blessed by God and is sacred. If you break your vow, people will hold you to it and people will suffer,'' Bryant said.

Bryant was among the presidential hopefuls at the forum sponsored by Navajo Times newspaper and broadcast live by Navajo radio station KTNN at the Window Rock Sports Center. Attended by about 1,000 people, many Navajos cheered and stomped for candidates and applauded their bluntness.
