Shampoo ingredient harmful to mice brains
http://www.kare11.com/news/news_article.aspx?storyid=131538
At the University of North Carolina, suds are under study. Doctor Steven Zeisel's work with mice shows a compound called diethanolamine (DEA) robs the developing brain of memory cells. DEA is an ingredient found in shampoo and many other products.

"When we apply DEA to the skin of pregnant mice we find the memory center the hippocampus doesn't develop as well in her fetuses," Zeisel said

The evidence suggests DEA blocks the brain's ability to absorb choline, a nutrient that plays a crucial role in the brain's memory cell making process. So far the results have been only found in mice - a distinction that is very important according to fetal medicine specialist Dr. Katherine Minard.

I find this so distrubing. Paraben is found to cause weight gain.

DEA causes loss of memory. I wonder what is going on. The more that I read, the more I am glad I went organic years ago.

2. Other products with DEA and other names for DEA

More than 100,000 tons of DEA are sold in the United States each year. It is used as a wetting or thickening agent in not only shampoos but also such products as hand soaps, hairsprays and sunscreens. You may also find it on labels listed as Lauramide diethanolamine, Coco Diethanolamide, coconut oil amide of diethanolamine, Lauramide DEA, Lauric diethanolamide, Lauroyl diethanolamide, and Lauryl diethanolamide.

20. These are chemical derivatives of DEA, not DEA itself.
On long standing, they might decompose to form small amounts of DEA, but there is not necessarily 'free' DEA around otherwise. That doesn't guarantee they are harmless, but it's important to know that they are not the same thing as DEA itself.

7. I can believe this...Most shampoos today are crap but organics I've tried
Edited on Sat Aug-05-06 08:38 PM by KoKo01
fry my hair so bad I haven't found one that works. And, I hear the "organics" often disguise their ingredients so that you don't know what you are getting in them, either.

I've used expensive Hair Salons shampoos and they've caused me to break out or dry my hair so bad I have to buy more high priced conditioners to try to stop the damage...but it's an endless cycle of more products more hair damage more conditioners more allergies.

I've gone through quite a few organics that left me with as bad or worse than the salon stuff.

Why don't they bring back the shampoos from the 80's that didn't fry hair ...or did they have worse ingredients that Dem leaning FDA banned?

What is one to do? When everyone uses Blow Dryers these days which are the biggest "hair fryers" there's not much alternative if one has thick hair with unruly curls. You all with the straight hair have a big advantage...but for "compromised hair" to look presentable one must resort to more products. You just can't wash your hair with a bar of soap and figure it's good. Even if the soap is organic. Some of us are not so lucky to have that kind of hair...

I'm sure my brain is fried...why else would I be here...:D

there.

Thanks for the warning though. I'm going to make certain to not shampoo my pregnant mice any longer, and will use the shampoo only on my own head in the future.

14. I dropped using nearly all cosmetics except for Aubrey's line
They are truly all natural. Even Burt's Bees have some items with questionable stuff in it.

Aubrey's shampoos and conditioners are really great. And their face powders work well instead of the usual chemical laden liquid makeups.

It's not alcohol, it's shampoo?

Sorry, couldn't resist. But seriously, thank you. I have a small soap-making business, and I've been considering making some shampoo bars. Now I will!
