Imagine the boldness of it.
GM, Standard Oil and Firestone Tire buying up urban railroads. Why this consortium? Why would they want to do this, instead of continuing to make buses, refine oil, and sell tires?
Well, after they bought control of 55 of America's urban railroads, they made the decision to junk them, pull out the right-of-way, which often went back to before the city was built, destroy the rolling stock, pull down the stations, which became restaurtants, and pull up the track. We were the only country in the world pulling up track, for many years.
It worked. That small investment, which after al was tacked onto your cost of gasoline, left America dependent on gas and diesel cars, trucks and buses. And the only penalty, for what seemed a bold conspiracy in restraint of trade, was a $5000 fine in XI District Court, and it was not even for the conspiracy, only for surrounding issues.
Now flash forward to the 1970's, after the oil shock. With their new, huge profits, the oil companies decided to invest in...GEOTHERMAL LEASES!
